I've gone veggie

I went Veggie for six months and actually gained weight. I was eating way too many carbs, I then went bact to meat and lost the weight quickly.

Well, it's an experiment, so I'll have to see how it works out. It's been so-far-so-good this month.

The low-carb thing doesn't work for me. I've tried it and it just makes me sick, and I don't lose weight.

I went veggie one summer because the camp's meat was so scary looking that it was either do without or die.....

And I lost about 20 pounds and was in great shape for basketbal pre-season training the following fall.

I'm not really wanting to do the low carbs thing although all of my friends are on the Atkins diet. I'm afraid I'll pass out or something.

Anyway... good for you! 🙂 Keep it up!

Congrats, Daumantas! Perhaps vegetarians are healthier than us meat-eaters after all. But eating flesh is something I'll never give up. 😀

Drink more beer!

High in carbs and 100% cholesterol free!

i've been veggie for about 7(?) years now. I lost a lot of weight. I did it mostly to regulate my blood pressure (as it was high). Good luck!

Ha! Good point, Strel. And beer is also low in saturated fats...

Hmmm...Maybe I should go on the "all-beer" diet (also known as the "return to my college days" diet).

ive been veggie since i was 11 lol..and im still alot fatter than id like..i want to do the low carb thingy but how wud i its close to impossible?!!!! lol
but the beer diet is great......im a student...and im single now...so ill b puttin myself on a beer drip probably lol

carbs are everywhere. I wouldn’t even give them a thought. make sure to get enough protein! legumes, nuts and skim milk (unless you are going vegan... then dairy is out and I would recommend a B12 supplement) are the easiest way to go. protein not only maintains muscle mass, it also delays hunger.

if it’s strictly for dietary reasons, and not a lifestyle choice, then fish and poultry are excellent, low fat, high protein choices.

I work in the nutrition field and am definitely one of those, ‘do as I say, not as I do’ people. I have peanut M&Ms for lunch on a semi-regular basis. but I still worry when I hear about people adopting extreme diet practices. vegetarian is definitely one of the wisest choices, so long as you stay on top of the protein/B12 thing and take a multivitamin ‘just in case’. good luck!

🙂 i went veggie when i was young because i m an animal lover and felt hypocrytical sayin that and eating meat! i didnt think about the health reasons. i was vegan for a year , but was warned off it by my doctor, as i was underweight and unhealthy at the time and he told me i was at risk of osteoperosis and other nasty things. maybe now im helahty ill tyr to do the vegan thing agian.........with no chocolate,,i might lose weight then lol😛

veggie is not healthy

i have been on the atkins diet since may, '97. i am the healthiest person i know, and any of my family/friends know.

after all this time my oldest brother is trying my diet. he can't believe how well it's working! his wife lamented that they didn't try it years ago when i first touted it.

now it has been found that women don't do as well as men on the atkins diet. women need to have their matabolisms shifted around, and it is very hard at times, for some.

one thing is clear though, veggie sounds knoble, but won't save one animal from the butchers knife. and it's unhealthy to boot.

Not so, Mr. areenactor! Eating veggie is only unhealthy if one doesn't know what one is doing (i.e. making sure to eat COMPLETE proteins and other essential vitamins). I think you'd be hard pressed to find a well learned nutritionist that would say different.

As far as whether or not an animal's life may be spared by one person going veggie, I think I can see the point you're trying to make. But try thinking of it this way. One person goes veggie and turns one or two others onto it and then those people turn one or two onto it, then before you know it less meat is being purchased and sold (less demand = less supply). Just because one person can't make a huge difference doesn't mean it's not a worth while dicision.

ah, but you've already provided me with the obvious retort!
first, the only complete protein is from animal products. there are essential amino acids that you can only get from red meat, not even fish. also another biggie, you can completely giveup carbos.i.e.; potatoes, noodles, bread, and not need to take any supliments. but you can't give up meat w/o needing massive suppliments to make up for the loss.

another benifit. diabetics can go off insulin shots by giving up carbos! the only need the human body has for insulin is to digest starches, and other carbohydrates.

last. in 1996, at the las vegas nv. convention of the nutritionists/diaticians. a phony study was done asking them if they were shown clear clinical proof that meat was better for their patients, would they tell their patients? 75% of the respondents admited that they would hide the truth, and admited further that they had alterior motives in their teachings. the reachers said they were from a big anti-meat group, so they got permission to do the poll.
when the truth came out, the national group for nutritionists threadened to sue, then tried to denie the event took place, then said they were tricked, with misleading question.

either way, the truth came out. so no thanks ,i'll not bother with nutritionists.
i came by my info by being a nurse in an alternative medicine clinic for over 5 years. i saw the results with my own eyes everyday for that whole time!

Protein is comprised of amino acids. There are 23 different amino acids present in nature. We require just ten of them, in the right amounts and combinations in our diet to maintain proper health and vitality. If any one of the ten essential amino acids is missing, you may still have a type of protein, but not one that is useable to a human body.

Most vegetarians have decreasing levels of health due to lack of essential amino acids in their diet. Most vegetarians have a process going on in their bodies called catabolism - the breaking down of protein tissues within the body to supply needed protein in other parts of the body - a highly undesirable situation.

It is only the well-educated vegetarian that understands how to properly combine specific foods and supplements to achieve proper protein intake. Therefore, it is only the well-educated vegetarian who can hope to maintain a decent level of health.

ROFLMFAO! 😀

I've been a vegetarian for 20+ years now. The only thing I miss, meat-wise, is Smithfield ham...I'm from Virginia, doncha know.

Daumantas, you may find that you have more energy once your system adjusts to your new diet; I did. 🙂

Ayla has a good point; you need to figure out what works best for you. Happy grazing! (Something some of my friends say to me...they like to tease me. :rotate:

Ayla - thanks for the advice. I've been being careful to eat enough beans and skim milk to ensure that I'm not missing any nutrients (I'm not doing vegan). Also, to the extent that I "lapse," it would be to poultry, so I think we're in agreement here. (I'm not being doctrinaire about it, and it's basically for the sake of weight loss. I am trying to limit my intake of animal products in general, though, because I need to lower my cholesterol.)

Steve, don't turn this into a political issue. That's bad for everyone's health. (And besides, I saw the results with my own eyes too: in the form of the barf coming out of my mouth after two weeks on the Atkins diet about three years ago.)

glad to hear it, Daumantas. it sounds like you have decided to just plain eat healthier. something we all could use a little more of (myself included!). it’s frustrating that it’s more work and more expensive... but it’s also giving yourself what you deserve. and don’t be too hard on yourself if you lapse. feel good about what you ARE doing.

and lite... who on earth would ever tease YOU? you know... I never did find out what kwil was talking about when he mentioned ‘the boa’... 😉

lol well i admit im a bad vegetarian!! i can cook but can never b bothered when its just for one!! maybe i should makeit a new habit to eat healthily...i just cnt b bothered😛

i just hate this

where the hell was i being political???

beans aren't a proper sourse of protein! geez where do you vegans get these ideas? oh yeah, other vegans!

and skim milk?! you might as well drink water, all the nutritional value (limited at best in whole) has been removed.

(Sigh) For the THIRD time, Steve - I'm NOT going to do the Atkins diet. I've tried it. It made me sick and didn't work. I'm not going to try it again. So just DROP it, OK?

If it works for you, fine. But don't insist on it for other people who don't want to do it, will ya?

fine, i never told you personaly to go on the atkins diet! but i WILL NOT STOP espousing it! if it made you sick, i feel very sorry for you. i'll not go into what i think you should do from a medical stand point, as you don't want to hear anything from me.

i am still waiting to hear how i was being "political"?
