What do you believe are the roots, causes, contributing factors, and prolonging elements which produce a home (or a section of a home; e.g., the attic or the basement or the bedroom or the storage shed or whatever) that is dominated by junk and clutter ?

Is/Are there any difference(s) in a business office that is full of clutter ?

Are there lifestyle "marker" behaviors ? If so, are they causal, or coincidental, or are they co-resultant from similar roots and causal factors ?

Is there a relationship between...

[A] The way a business chooses to operate

and

The general demeanor of the shop and office

In my house we have too much stuff, and not enough places to put it. It seems to collect in little places like on sidetables etc... If I was to rummage through one of the many little pots that this general crap accumulates, I would probably find: a couple of unidentifiable plastic bits off god knows what, a battery, a charger for an unknown appliance, a battery, a couple of elastic bands, a lego-man torso, an instruction manual, an allen key and so on... It stays there cos noone knows where else it should be put, but it's not rubbish either 🙂

ok, that doesn't answer your question at all! -ed

My reason:

My brothers move out and leave some of their stuff here. We combine 2 people's stuff into one room so the other can be a guest room. In the year, people just keep putting stuff in there until the room is full. That's when we decided, a few weeks ago, that it was yard sale extravaganza time again, so other people can take our crap and put it in their house.

You have those too, Sunday??

In my computer room right now I see a collection of 3 glass jars, and a hollow porcelian oriental figure. Between the 4 of them they host a collection of crap consisting of 2 pens, 7 pencils (none sharpened to a usable point), 2 markers, 1 paint pen, 2 highlighters, 17 rubber bands, 3 scrunchies, 2 hair clips, 1 bobby pin, 1 safety pin, nail polish, 4 thumb tacks, scotch tape, 12 misc. stickers, scissors, dice, film, a broken ruler, inscense, super glue, an empty zippo lighter, a name plate, matches, old newspaper cartoon clippings, a pencil sharpner, a yo-yo, a small post-it pad, a few screws, an unidentified small piece of plastic, a cross pendant without a chain, 2 cough drops, and a penny.

That is just this small room. We won't get into the collections of junk to be found in other drawers, boxes, misc compartments, and objects throughout the house, not to mention the closets, the van, the cupboards, under the sinks, and god forbid - our storage unit. 😱 😱 😱

junk, its seems to grow like mold and mildew. We have the usual assortment of junk in my house....every extra draw or closet seems to have its own junk. Matter fact I was thinking its time to weed out the junk (usually a couple of times a year) and start from scratch with new junk!

I used to be a pack-rat like my dad. Then I moved in with a girl for several years, and learned how to get rid of stuff (Mostly to make more room for her stuff🙂. Anyway, my rule is: If you haven't used it for a month or two, get rid of it.

Toys and fun stuff are exempt from the rule😀 I'll never part with my insane collection of toys and collectibles😀

So, does anyone care to suggest a root cause of the condition ?

What contributing factors have you seen in people who practice this, practice this to an extreme, and practice this to a neurosis ?

Conversely, what characteristics have you seen in people who don't have this problem ?

What's the difference between those who do and those who don't ?

What attitudes start it ?

Does anybody have any ideas ?

Flatfoot, thank you so much for your reply.

I would like to invite others to share similar and/or differing observations and opinions.

Most of it, I love this stuff! I like to look at it and see what I've accumulated over the years and how some of it brings back memories. The other half, I'm too lazy to get rid of or it's illegal to get rid of or I don't know how to get rid of it. (Paint, furniture, that kind of stuff).
