What a sad, tragic day in our history. America was being torn apart by a seemingly unending war in Southeast Asia. I was 15 that year, and remember watching the news reports.

It was a tumultuous and divisive time in the nation. I was a freshman at another large Midwestern university and the demonstrations that followed on our campus after Kent state ended up with the university closing down. It was a time before the Internet. Before Fox news. Before 9-11 and Osama Bin Laden. A more divisive war than our most recent conflicts. Not to mention that the only source for tickling material was in magazines and peep show movies (not even VHS back then) in Adult stores or the occaisional letter in Penthouse Forum.
But Kent State was a seminal event and one that moved more of the country to reject the Vietnam War. It was a tense time in the nation.

It was sort of my freshman year, also; newspaper writer while taking classes,.... and my lingering recollection is about the number of students who actively cheered the event. In the words of a redneck former national guardsman in my Lit. class, "If I'd been there, I would have emptied my damn rifle." My newspaper work brought me in contact with the local police force, and I heard dozens of them declaring that the Kent State students "got what they deserved." Of course,... this was the South.
