Legendary voice of Blue Jays passes

To all Blue Jay fans: I am really sorry for your loss. He was to you guys what Bob Murphy was to the Mets. An icon who always called a great game and never thought of himself bigger than the game. Unlike Joe Buck or Chris Berman or John Sterling to name a few. He gave you an honest call without pom-poms and without any BS. I have heard Tom from time to time when I lived in New York and you can get games late at night. He was an excellent announcer whom I know will not only be missed by Blue Jay fans but will be missed in the baseball world. May you Tom Rest In Peace.

I'm not familiar with Tom Cheek but it's always sad when a voice like his dies. He must mean as much to Toronto fans as Chick Hearn does to Lakers fans like me. RIP Tom. 🙁

I heard about this, leaf, and Iam very sorry about Tom's loss.

The post about Bob Murphy of the Mets and the effect it had on the sports world is appropriate. I have never been a Mets fan, but I lived in NY for 29 years before moving here, and used to listen to Bob on the radio from the time I was a little kid. At the time he passed, it was a major blow to the sports broadcasting world.

Anyhow, my condolences to all Blue Jay fans about Tom.

Thank you Mitchell for saying that my words about Bob Murphy and Tom Cheek was appropriate. You listening to Bob for all those years ( and being a Braves fan ) you know what "Murph" meant to us Mets fans. I mean he was OUR voice and our eyes on the radio for 42 years. There is a song for both you and leafstk done by Terry Cashman and it is called " Play By Play ( I Saw It On The Radio ) " Look at www.winthropmedia.com then click on Winthrop Records then click on to the album titled " Passin' It On: America's Baseball Heritage In Song." It is the 15th song on the album ( it is highlighted in blue ) and listen to it. You close your eyes and you will be surprised what kind of an effect that song will have on you.

Its amazing how such personalities become entrenched in our communities... hats off to these consumate professionals 🙂 All three mentioned above are worthy examples.

Another example would be Foster Hewitt, who was always adored by hockey fans everywhere in this country, doing both radio broadcasts and weekly television broadcasts on Hockey Night in Canada. He's been immortalized since his retirement and passing many years ago, with the "Foster Hewitt" gondola installed in the Air Canada Center, home of the Leafs.

I am also a Mets fan since 1973 and Bob Murphy was the first person that popped into my mind when I read about this. He was a big part of my life from watching the Mets all these years and when he passed, I fely like I got kicked in the groin. To me, he was one of those personalities who was the same day in and day out. You know that if you had a rough day and stress was a little higher than usual, you can turn on the TV (or radio) and listen to his voice, and put things in prespective. I venture to say that was the effect that Tom Cheek had on the baseball fans of Toronto.

I also think that comparing tom to Bob is appropriate. My condolences to all Blue Jay fans, and Tom's family.

RIP Tom
