Small blasts hit London transport

Thursday, July 21, 2005; Posted: 9:22 a.m. EDT (13:22 GMT)

LONDON, England (CNN) -- At least one person has been injured following reports of three small explosions on London's transport system, police say.

The incidents came two weeks to the day since bombs on three Underground trains in London and a double-decker bus killed 56 people including four bombers.

CNN's Matthew Chance said police told him a device exploded in or around Warren Street Tube station in the center of the British capital.

The area around the station has been sealed off and the Bomb Squad is on the scene to check for other explosive devices.

Transport Police told ITN there was an injury at Warren Street. There are no other reports of casualties.

Scotland Yard is also reporting an incident on a bus at Hackney Road and Columbia Road in east London. A witness said the bus is still intact and a bomb-sniffing dog was on the scene.

An explosion blew out the windows of a bus in the Hackney area of London on Thursday but there were no reports of injuries, bus operator Stagecoach said.

"The driver heard a bang he believed came from the upper desk of the bus. The windows were blown out. There are no reports of any injuries," a Stagecoach spokesman said.

Police said initially they were not treating the evacuations as a "major incident."

A Scotland Yard spokesperson told CNN that Warren Street, Shepherds Bush and Oval stations had all been evacuated.

London Underground confirmed that services on three lines -- Victoria, Northern and Hammermith and City -- were suspended following the incidents, according to PA.

Ambulances were called to Oval station at 12:38 p.m. (7:38 a.m. ET), and sent three vehicles. At 12:45 p.m., a call came in from Warren Street. Five vehicles were sent there.

The ambulance service had no details on the Shepherd's Bush station incident.

Bryce Elder, a witness near the Shepherd's Bush station, said there was a heavy police presence but "no real sense of panic."

Police helicopters flew overhead and areas near Shepherd's Bush station were evacuated. Elder said the station was not very busy.

CNN London producer Katie Turner reported a heavy police presence near the Oval station, including about 30 police vehicles. Roads about 500 meters from the station have been blocked off to vehicular traffic, she said.

Prime Minister Tony Blair postponed a planned photocall with Australian Prime Minister John Howard, on an official visit to the capital and planned to make a speech later Thursday.

The White House said President George W. Bush has been informed of the incidents.

There was also a small explosion on another bus that blew out the windows, but no injuries reported.......

:ranty: WTF!!!

Ray

Yeah, I heard about that on CNN. I can't believe that someone or group tried again. And it's only been exactly 2 weeks since the last attack. But thank God only 1 person was injured and no one was killed.

Bastards.

Is anyone else sick and tired of these nutjobs who believe they're going to change the world by killing anything that moves?

Nice to see people so far advanced.

Like I said, they can try to attack us again, but they will be of no consequence. They stopped London Underground again, but that happens on a regular basis anyways!

Lets hope...........

....if some of these suspects turn up in the US, they are returned to the UK if we ask them to be. Sadly the US has a very poor record on handing over terror suspects to the UK in the last 30 years, least their "human rights" are abused.

Yeah yeah, save it folks, dont tell me, that kind of terror was "different"

Wont tell ya that that was different, but I will say that the times are and we as a nation have changed a wee bit since 911, Mate.... 😉

Yes they have venners me old china..........

....please remind me not to post after overdosing on "Fox News" and "The Orielly Factor"......the tone of patronising moral righteousness about terrorism makes my blood boil at times. Its interesting to note how uncomfortable Orielly gets when the subject of terrorism in the UK is in the news as it is at the moment. He is obliged to engage British journalists and various other pundits on the current outrages and conduct interveiws with them. He talks to them as if terror attacks are something new to the UK and expects his interviewee's to be stunned and shell shocked at the recent outbreak of terror attacks, which of course they are not. Then they explain that we have been putting up with this stuff for over thirty years at the hands of the IRA.......at which point Orielly generally cuts them off or changes the subject.

From The Guardian:

A witness of the operation at Stockwell described the man being "shot dead" in front of him. Passenger Mark Whitby said he was sat on a Northern Line train when three plainclothes officers ran on in "hot pursuit" of a South Asian man. He told BBC News: "I heard lots of shouts of 'get down, get down'. I looked to my right and I saw an Asian man run on the train. As he ran on he half tripped."

He said the man was being pursued by three plainclothes officers who ran on just a few feet behind him. Watching from just a few yards away, the witness said one officer then brought out a pistol in his left hand. "They pushed him onto the floor and unloaded five shots into him. He's dead," Mr Whitby said.

Mr Whitby said he did not see a bag, but the man had worn a bulky winter-style coat, and there may have been "something underneath it".

He said he then left the train where he saw 10 to 15 police officers armed with handguns and sub machine guns on the platform.

He said: "One of the police officers was holding a black automatic pistol in his left hand. They held it down to him and unloaded five shots into him. I saw it. He's dead, five shots, he's dead."

While most police in Britain do not carry guns, officers with special licences can do so.

The standard policy saying officers should not use a gun except as a last resort was changed after the July 7 bombings, giving police the authority to shoot suspected suicide bombers first and ask questions later.

A spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain said Muslims he had spoken to this morning were "jumpy and nervous". Inayat Bunglawala said: "I have just had one phone call saying 'What if I was carrying a rucksack?'.

"We are getting phone calls from quite a lot of Muslims who are distressed about what may be a shoot to kill policy."

Nice. Guess I'll be hiding under my bed from now on.

Fucking wankers.

Cheers.

Whats that???.......

....we have a "shoot to kill policy" on muslim youths carrying ruck sacks on the tube?

BLOODY GOOD IDEA

I just dont get it............

.....whats the problem with these rag heads? if they dont like it in the UK, why dont they bugger off to a totalitarian muslim fundamentalist state? end of problem.

HAHAAH
I agree fully 'Red' there is the same problem here in Sydney and all the whole population does is complain about Australians and Australia's relations with the western world. Hey but if you dont like go back home and ride to work on ur goat or donkey or any other farm animal and shut the hell up.

And about the shot first law and how they are worried, well if there clean and doing nothing wrong there shouldnt be anything to worry about.

And also at last the get a feeling of some what terror when tehy step outside their doors.

Maybe you should "shut the hell up", ya racist git.

Fucking worthless Aussies.

Cheers.

Yeah, I'm kind of thinking like some of you...

Okay, when they live "here", they wear Western clothes, they like doing it with Western women becuase they have low Western morals, they like Western technology especially if it is by way of Westernized Japan, they are "Western" in daily life (ie; they use cell phones, drive cars with A/C, use public transport, etc.), they use Western democratic ideas of privacy and forming of coalitions to their advantage, they appreciate the freedom from state-mandated religions so they can worship their own invisible ghosts in their own way. I even saw a photo of the subway bombers all white-water rafting together, happy & content! That's what drunk Americans do!!!

But then, when they decide they need to "fight for their principals", or get back to their religious roots, they start blowing stuff up. What's the deal, yo? It's like entire college frats of Tim McVeys. They just can't stand "the West."

It is true, and I will keep saying it, we all could probabaly learn more about people different that ourselves, and reach out more to those who seem insulated. But they could WAY more join in our reindeer games than they seem to be willing. Be yourself, be true to who you are, but you gotta recognize you can do that in the first place becuase you have agreed to join into a larger society that allows that in the first place. As Dennis Miller said years ago: when you move "here", there is already a set of house rules in place. Don't get here then complain that the street signs aren't written in Hmong.

I think some of the people here need to start holding there extremist views in check. It's not going to win them any friends.

I think some of the people here haven't been making stuff explode anywhere - views, I can handle. I'm tough!

Hey come off it Cos.........

....no one here has expressed "racist" views in my opinion. All the unpleasant remarks are directed at those carrying out the bombings. No one is against any particular race, and no one has said that they are against any particular race.

Speaking for myself, I am against the people who carry out this type of act and not Asians or Muslims per se.

I will continue to express unpalatable and offensive views about any one who carries out acts of terror.....even white western males from Ireland.
