At the beginning of the month, we lost Muhammad Ali and Gordie Howe. Now news comes that we lost Pat Summitt and Buddy Ryan.
The great UConn women's coach Geno Auriemma said that Summitt put women's basketball on the map. Plus she was instrumental in starting the WNBA.
My only recollection of Buddy Ryan was the 1993 divisional match-up between the Huston Oilers and Kansas City Chiefs. Joe Montana hit Tim Barnett to tie the game at 20-20 in the final minutes. Instead of spiking the ball, Barnett heaved the ball at a banner with a giant Buddy Ryan face on it.
But in all seriousness, Buddy Ryan was a defensive genius. Mike Ditka said that without Buddy Ryan, there wouldn't have been the dominant Bears 46 defense that propelled them to the Superbowl XX win.
RIP to both of them and condolences to their families.
