M*a*s*h

Damn my satellite! It says it's on, but yeah..just about over.
Interesting description. It has no title, either....could it be the very first episode?
"Series/Special (Usually there's a title in front)

Army surgeons blow off steam between hours of combat surgery."

In one hour from now, episodes "Sometimes You Hear The Bullet" and "The Longjohn Flap" will be on. 😛

I'm not sure. It was basically about two guys, seemed like secret agents, one had a broken arm and they were helicopter pilots or something and they were covering up something or spying or something, I'm not sure. But again Hawkeye and co. came up with a way to figure them out and make them look foolish, them and of course Burns.

I have to say though that the final episode of MASH was about the finest thing ever put on film.
My thoughts exactly!

I fell in love with MASH when I began watching the reruns back in Oakland. The combination of sophisticated comedy and drama, the superb writing and acting, and the Southeast Asia theme added up to what I consider the ultimate TV show 🙂

My favourite characters are the minor ones, Father Mulcahy (would that all priests be like him!), Dr. Sidney Freedman (whose first name was originally "Milton" on the character's first appearance on the show), and of course, Major Houlihan, who matured from a nasty nag in the early seasons into a kinder, more caring and well-rounded person in the later years.

Oh, and the Korean War was like 2 years long.

The Korean war lasted 4 years (although they are in a negotiated cease-fire,
so techically you could say that the war STILL isnlt over yet...)

Yeah, the first episode with Harry Morgan was at the very least bizzarre. As PC as everyone tries to be anymore (OOPS, I mean 'Diverse' ...LOL!) that episode probably wouldn't be made.

The only character I didn't care for (as far as the development of him) was Col. Flagg, the guy from the CID (the equivalent then of the CIA today). This was in the time period post-Vietnam when Hollywood and the press was so blatantly anti-military and esp. anti-CIA that it was borderline on the ridiculous. I am old enough to remember in the 80's when all these groups would still organize massive protests whenever the CIA came to the campus to recruit soon to be graduates. Col. Flagg became almost as one-sided a character as Burns, if not more. Like Friedmanm they could have done a lot more with him, and still had some good laughs with it. But that is only my opinion...

the series was great..for awhile. The longer it went the worse it had gotten.Guess writers changed over the years. The last episode/movie was AWEFUL!

For sheer comedy, I like the episode where Hawk and BJ go on a bathing strike to try and get winchester from playing his french horn, and for a heartfelt feel good sort of episode I think the one where Winchester gives the korean orphans the candy is a fine example of how good the show could be.

A note to Vlad: In the older episodes McClain Stevenson played the part of Col. Henry Blake when he left the show he was replaced by Harry Morgan who played the part of Col. Sherman T. Potter.
A little M*A*S*H trivia for everyone Harry Morgan also played the part of a General who was about a half a bubble shy of plumb on one episode of the show before he took the role of Col. Potter. I liked Major Winchester too even though his snobbish upper crust attitude got a bit overbearing at times. I also liked it when they would unwind and relax by getting plastered because it showed they were real people who need a release from the terrible reality of war plus it was always funny and never when they were on duty. I think most of them played a pretty good drunk but in my opinion Harry Morgan was the best at it, especially in the episode when Major Hulahan gets married and the one where Col. Potter, Hawkeye and BJ are coming back to the 4077th in a jeep and all of them are three sheets to the wind.

I didn't really watch the show that much but I have seen a few episodes. One laugh out loud moment for me was a totally random scene that didn't make much sense but they put it in anyway.

Hawkeye and Col. Potter were in a jeep and Hawkeye starts yelling "Vroom! Vrooooom!" and he was cranking the wheel pretending to drive. Potter yells "Turn the jeep on first!" and Hawkeye straightens right up and mutters, "Oh...yeah right.", starts up the jeep and they go sputtering off. Just a nice random moment.

That one is one of my favorite episodes I always wondered if Harry Morgan did some improve at the court martial scene The look one everybody's faces is priceless

Another favorite scene is when Burns takes that old Sherman tank out for a spin and destroys half of the camp

I think MASH is great. Just finished watching a repeat on Paramount Comedy 🙂 One of the older ones with Trapper, Blake, etc.

I like Hawkeye (I also seriously admire the way the series was kept going half the time by Alan Alda writing AND directing some episodes, as well as starring) and the one hardly anyone has mentioned...Corporal/Sergeant Max Clinger! The crazy transvestite who tried to get out of the army...although it was rather odd and incongruous when he tried so hard to get promoted to Sergeant...hmm...

Frank Burns: You- you...

Hawkeye: Who are you calling a 'You-You'?

😀

It would have been great if Major Burns liked to tickle feet. There were a few times when he and Major Hulahan were in her tent together and he could have tickled those pretty feet of hers if he wanted to.

Regarding Klinger, that was another very smart thing that they did to keep MASH from getting stale. Instead of going 11 years wearing a dress long after they came up with new material to support the idea they had him whipped into shape, forgot about the Section 8, and start dressing like a real army man.

There was one time when Hawkeye was doing the monthly foot inspection on the camp He stroked Hot Lip's foot a bit She looked like she was holding back laughter

I'm most pleased with the turnout of this thread. I honestly didn't expect it to do so well.

That reminds me of more trivia from the show, but this time you gotta guess it.

When Klinger wasn't dressed in drag, he would sometimes be wearing a baseball hat. What team's hat was he wearing?

Toledo Mud Hens

Klinger also wore a Toledo Mud Hens jersey besides the hat in several episodes of the show and when he and Col. Potter swapped jobs in one episode Col. Potter sported a Mud Hens jersey and hat too.

In that same episode, Hawkeye did the inspection of Col. Potter's feet, and he was laughing, admitting that he (or at least his character) was foot ticklish. Hawkeye really isn't doing anything to Potter than an normal physical assesment of his feet, but it is an indirect mainstream scene anyway...

That was the "Boxing Day" episode. THe best part of that one was Charles having to switch places with the cafeteria cook. Trivia: The man who played the cook (NOT Igor, the poor schlep that was always serving the food in the cafeteria) also played the bar owner in "Quincy."

Can you tell I watched waaaaaay to much TV when I was young???

One of the ironic things about the show, is that the actor who played Max "I'll do anything to get out of the army" Klinger (Jamie Farr) was the only one of the cast members to have actually been in the army.

I never knew that! That is too cool 🙂

I admire the way the Klinger character matured and gave up the dress schtick; he even ended up as a pretty good sergeant at the end 🙂 I was also touched by the way he fell in love with the Korean girl and stayed in Korea to search for her missing relatives. I think that Klinger showed the greatest amount of personal development of any MASH character over the course of the series.

AfterMASH anyone!? Didn't think so.

Yes well, if you wanna go with the series, Klinger left Korea to work at General Pershing, a veteran's hospital in Missouri. Good ol' 'AfterMASH', huh? It was him, Sherman Potter, and Father Mulcahy, nobody else. Radar and Colonel Flagg guest-starred in a couple episodes, though. Klinger brought along his wife, and you get to meet Mildred (Potter's wife) for the first time, too! Too bad AfterMASH sucked.

I knew that some of the actors wanted to have another season of M*A*S*H the year the series ended but I though that was the end of it. I never knew about that show SheDevil. When did "AfterMASH air and how many episodes of the show were there?

If memeory serves me correct, it limped through 2 seasons
