What the? Dude, if money is your concern, stay the fuck away from Macs. Everything about Macs is expensive. If you think upgrading a PC is expensive, try upgrading a Mac. Hell, try BUYING a Mac.
You will pay more for Mac products. By about 30 to 40%
Alot of people think Macs are expensive and they are if you keep comparing a Mac to an IBM with the same mhz rating, thats because Macs use a Reduced Instruction something or other which means they more efficient and require less speed.
Then again, go to someone that actually sells Macs and ask them if they are expensive... or better yet if they make alot of money through selling just macs. They'll probably laugh at you. Thats because at the moment Macs are about as dirt cheap as they will get because your local Mac dealer is making shit all from selling you a Mac..
Example:
I just bought an 1.25ghz eMac, Apple's economic option. Whats more I bought this as a student so I get a 10% discount. I also upgraded the HD from 40gig to 80gig for $70 AUS (good deal) and gave it a total of 1gig ram for only $300 AUS (retails at $500, the dealers can't get it that cheap even).
Altogether, this is costing me about $1500 and I've even got a 3 year warrenty. How much is that guy that sold it to me making? He's making about $35 from this transaction, not including the petrol money he's gonna need to go get my computer, or the cost of his time, resources etc etc. If I wasn't a student he might've made close to $100, but that wasn't the case.
No Mac dealer makes it money through selling new Macs. They make it through other things.... like software or third party hardware like cameras, printers etc. Thats also why Macintosh software (especially games) seem so expensive, its because they are almost making a loss selling computers.
IBM dealers don't have that problem, they actually make money through selling computers thats why the games are cheaper generally.
Theres probably more issues here, but thats a main one.
Coincidently, I'm a musican and I will be using this alot for various audio things as well as composition after I get a few little add ons like USB-midi and the like. Because of my use of the computer means that the software I'm going to buy is (and already has) going to cost at least half as much as the computer itself for each program REGARDLESS of which system I bought.
