How old is the Manchester United franchise?
I hear it mentioned on various TV shows, including one episode of MASH, so I figure it had to date back into the 50s at least.
I also heard it mentioed in that monumental piece of crap Day After Tomorrow.

I don't exactly when the franchise started, but events like some of the players dying in a plane crash in the '50s-'60s (not sure) and managing to win the UEFA Champions League in the mid-'60s may have perked international interest. What I do know is that they have their own TV channel on cable and satellite, and of course ex-player David Beckham. Best ask a Manchester United fan...

From an ex-Manchester United fan...

Manchester United were formed in 1878, under the name of Newton Heath. They changed their name in the early years of the 20th century.

And for fuck's sake Chimpy! How can you say they won the "UEFA Champions League in the mid-60's" (it was 1968 actually, they beat Benfica 4-1 after extra time)? It was called the European Cup till the mid-to-late 90's for smeg's sake!

The air crash you mentioned is the infamous Munich Air Crash of 1958. United were flying back from a european game when the plane crashed trying to leave the runway. Over 20 people were killed, including 8 of the club's first team.

Tron: Why did you call it a "franchise"?

Why, I hear you all ask, am I an ex-Man Utd fan? Well I supported the team for close to 25 years. But I finally threw in the towel when that idiot board of fucking directors allowed that back-stabbing, cum-gargling, snot-gobbling piece of shit called Alex Ferguson sell the best player on the team because he didn't like his dress sense or his wife. :dropatear

I Called It A Franchise

Because over here professional sports teams are run and incorporated as Franchises, so we tend to use it as a generic term on almost any pro sports team.

Thanks for the answers!. Are they considered a very popular team?

Ah right, with you.

Reasonably popular yes, but oddly enough, not in Manchester. Most Maccans are supporters of Manchester City, who are by comparison, a very mediocre team. A few years back when they won the treble of the Premier League, F.A. Cup and the UEFA Champions League they were touted as the greatest team in the world. To be honest though Real Madrid are better in Europe.

Man Utd are a bit strange in that people either support, or loath them. The general consensus is that referees officiating (especially at Old Trafford) are biased in their favour. Before Utd's rise to glory under Alex Ferguson (who is it has to be said, a brilliant football mananger, even if he is a complete ******** of a human being) Liverpool were the dominant English team. As a Man Utd Fan I loathed Liverpool with a passion (the two teams always have had a great sense of rivalry) and detested the way referees were biased towards them and that they recycled their crowd's noise through the PA system to magnify it. They were also a bunch of dirty, cheating bastards. However, non-Liverpool supporters (who weren't ManU fans) had a great respect for the club, totally unalike how Manchester United are regarded.

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!

Did I say Man Uted were formed in 1978? I did of course mean 1878. Pillock. 🙄

Ah They're Like The Dallas Cowboys Of The UK..

People either love them or loathe them, especially in their home city.

The highest TV ratings in the NFL are when the Cowboys are winning, or getting thumped. In fact when Dallas is getting whupped at halftime their ratings actually go up from the Dallas haters turning channels to watch it.

I figured the 1978 was a typo.

Thanks, It's fucking hot outside and I've been edging my sidewalks and driveway all day. A total of almost 500 feet of cement to edge near.

Pretty humid here too. I'm sweating like a hooded rapist right now.
