i know peyton is peyton but did anyone really think he deserved mvp this year.. i wouldnt even have considered him if i was voting i would have voted like this..

1 Chad Pennington
2 James Harrison
3 Matt Ryan
4 Demarcus Ware
5 Andre Johnson
6 Adrian Peterson
7 Matt Cassel
8 Michael Turner
9 Ed Reed
10 Troy Polamalu
11 Phillip Rivers

and then manning

Peyton Manning? The MVP? Really? I never saw that coming. He pretty much sucked ass the entire first half of the season.

I'd have voted for Vikings RB Adrian Peterson.

He missed games and had two knee surgeries, one before the season and one during the season. Everyone had written them off and all he did was lead them to winning their last 9 games in a row. What the hell do you want from the guy?

yes he did all that but do you think that warrants an mvp? he wasnt mvp caliber this year imo .. give it to pennington

Its pretty much a popularity contest among the sportswriters anyway.

And if guarantee that if Pennington was still a member of the Jets and had the same year he had with Miami, led the Jets to the playoffs.....Pennington would have been voted MVP. Those New York sportswriters hold A LOT of sway.

But it is hard to argue his overall impact on the league. I mean to beat San Diego, Pittsburgh and New England...all in a row, after being 3-4, to shoulder the entire team on his aging knees, was a pretty impressive feat. The way Manning can impose his will and somehow get the win.

I can see why he got the MVP, but if he had not won it, I certainly could have argued for several other players.

But I think you have the idea for a great thread punkrocker....

If you don't mind I think I'll run with it.

Rob

If you base the MVP on impact alone I would say give it to Kurt Warner. His stats are good (though not great) but what is important is that he changed the losing culture of the Cardinals. Granted, he has 2 really good recievers, but he got in players faces, switched the program from a running to a passing offense, and got the cards out of a 9 year playoff drought. that all must count for something.

Kurt Warner didn't deserve anything. The only victories the Cardinals had after their bye-week came against their division opponents. They were embarassed by Philly, Minnesota and New England in the final month of the season. Why would anyone think Warner had a chance?

Manning was the obvious choice to win. He played through a serious injury at the beginning of the season and was able to keep his team in position to have a chance when he became healthy. It's no coincidence that their streak began when Peyton was back in form. And he did it without much of a running game.

Peter King wrote about the MVP race in his MMQB-column this week and I agreed with what he had to say.

"For MVP, I ask myself this question: Which player, removed from his team, would have the biggest impact on the team's record?"

"I liked Pennington immensely because he was the clear keystone to a team improving from one win to 11; but the Dolphins got big contributions from the defense (they won five games scoring 17 points or fewer) and the Wildcat Formation."

"Manning never had a running game all season to help him; the Colts' 3.4-yard average per rush was their lowest this decade. He started the season more hurt than we knew (at least until now) and without his redoubtable center. The Colts went 3-4 through the end of October, but it would have been 1-6 without those comebacks over the Vikes and Texans. Then, with Manning finally getting his legs under him, the Colts rode a classic 9-0 Manning stretch to finish 12-4 and earn the fifth seed in the AFC playoffs."

"My take is Manning was the keystone to this team starting 3-4 instead of being out of it at 1-6. In the final nine games, Manning's 9-0 record led all NFL quarterbacks, Manning's 72-percent accuracy led all NFL quarterbacks, and Manning's 17-to-3 touchdown-to-interception (plus-14) differential led all NFL quarterbacks."

That's only a sample of the sitdown King had with Manning. It's worth the read to see what Peyton had to deal with last year.

but mvp isnt about who did it with the least its who was the best.. and pennington ended with a better completion percentage and a better passing rating and less ints, and if it was who did it with the least manning has more talent around him than pennington did.. i think because no one had an amazing year that the sportswriters said fuck it give it to peyton

The Colts would be picking behind Detroit in the draft if it weren't for Manning. Pennington was a key part of the team but I doubt they would've been a bad team without him. Tony Sparano is the reason they turned it around in Miami.

Matt Ryan, AP and Albert Haynesworth were my top 3.

Steelers didn't really have a legit guy on D, because it was a team effort.

Manning was a pick cause of his knee injury, the Colts winning 9 straight and because the voters love him.

Besides, the NFL MVP doesn't really mean much.

I'm pretty sure the Colts have lost in the 1st/2nd round every time Manning wins MVP.

MVP didn't get the Pats the Super Bowl last year either.

No big deal.

I'm more upset by the Rookie of the Year voting. Not that I don't think Matt Ryan deserved it, because he did. I'm just blown away that Joe Flacco didn't receive a single vote. Again, I never expected Flacco to win, but not one vote? That's insane.

yeah i found flacco not get any votes odd... but remeber its the defense that carries that team and thats why i think he didnt get any consideration.. my vote for rookie of the year woulda went to slaton.. i think he did the most for his team.. not that he was the best i just think he was the most valuable to his team

ummm to actually win a playoff in san diego... and they won 9 in a row so your point is... that doesnt mean that he deserves to be mvp....

oh well..

At least the Cowboys didn't make the playoffs!!! I wish the Vikings wouldn't have either, but I suppose that's being too picky.

What was the topic again? MVP? I agree, it didn't really seem like anyone had that HUGE year that would earn them MVP. But I guess they have to decide on one anyway.

While it's true that the defense carries the Ravens, Flacco is the first legitimate QB we've had in years. The offense is a hell of a lot better than it ever was during the boring Billick era. One could argue that is thanks to Cam Cameron, but no doubt that Flacco has been outstanding for a rookie out of a small college. I can't wait to see how he grows over the next few years.

im not saying that flacco isnt great.. im just saying he doesnt get the consideration because the ravens are seen as a defensive team and the thought around the league is that they would be where they were with any quarterback..

Oh, I understand what you mean. We both definitely agree he should have gotten at least a few votes, though. 😉

I think Michael Turner should have been MVP, it not Manning. The Colts wouldn't have won more than 4 games this year without Peyton. That's what an MVP is. Doesn't mean he's the best player in the league or anything, it's all proportional to their value to their specific team.

Regarding Matt Ryan being #3, I disagree (and so did the voters, I guess). He had a great year, and a lot of the surprise of that was because he's a rookie. He got offensive rookie of the year, which is what he deserved, but as far as MVP, he shouldn't be anywhere near it. He was good 'for a rookie', but if Peyton Manning or Chad Pennington had his passer rating (87ish) and threw 16 TDs and 11 INTs, and led their teams to the same record as the Falcons, they wouldn't have gotten one vote.

All in all, maybe Atlanta's O-line should have all gotten MVP for opening up things for Turner and Ryan.

I loved seeing Andre Johnson on your list, because he's completely an MVP type player. He's a monster talent. They do tend to only give it to guys on playoff teams, though, which I have mixed feelings about.

my thinking for ryan as mvp isnt so much because of stats which first off isnt what mvp is about its not best player its most valuable.. but anyway i put ryan up there because he played like and carried himself like a seasoned vet all through the year and took a team from 4 wins to 11, and yes i love andre johnson he is the best wide reciever in the game today... shame the texans can never stay healthy they could do a lot of damage.. they are my suprise team for next year im predicting 12 wins for them.. yes i said 12.... and michael turner has a case for mvp but he had to many up and down games this year... he had games of 42 then he would break off 200 then 60 then 190 he needed to be more consistent to win mvp.. but i still think pennington deserved mvp.. he had better stats than manning by far and took a one win team to 11 and there is no way they would have been there without pennington.. hence most valuable

I guess my case for AP would be that he pretty much was the offense in Minnesota this year. He led the league in rushing and, after all, this is a team that had Gus Frerotte as the QB for most of the year and still won their division.
He did have a few too many fumbles, which probably cost him the MVP.

I know that Manning was injured during the first half of the season, but injuries shouldn't be an excuse. If that were the case, I'd give the MVP award to Tom Brady, being that the Patriots went 16-0 with him and 11-5 without him.

Manning's injury isn't being used as an excuse for anything. With or without the injury, he was more valuable to the Colts that AP, Matt Ryan or any other candidate this year. That's why he won so big.
