I wanted to ask a question to anyone out there. I would love to hear if any of you are into martial arts.

I know the obvious answer is karategirl. lol. But I would love to hear if anyone else is into it.

i took karate when i was a kid for a while then i had to quick cuz my parents could not afford it any more

i'm currently into boxing, though some would argue if that is a martial art or not. Very good exercise and great discipline.

I'm a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Judo, and a certified instructor at both.
I taught for about seven years (in addition the years of training before I became an instructor) before I left my school due to disagreements with the direction in which they were taking it.

I have taken 8 years of Aikijutsu, 7 years of Okinawan Kempo-Ryu, 1 1/2 years of Muay Thai, about 6 months of BJJ, and study Iaido on and off for about 6 years.

Just over 10 years wrestling. 8 years submission wrestling. 6 months muay thai.

Snail Shell

Currently I am a red belt in Tae Kwon do, and I also incorporate Muay Thai as well. Both I have been doing for a little over 2 years.

some soo bahk do and kickboxing ( muay thai and traditional ) during and after college...most recently, about 2 yrs of mma training. i was a bouncer in various strip clubs after college for about 15 yrs. until a couple years ago.

I studied Taekwondo for several years, and miss it very much. I had achieved 1st degree black belt (recommended) by the time my school underwent some relocations and changes that eventually led me away from it. Someday, when the time to devote to it and the money is there again, I'll start up again. Love it. And cosmo, boxing is absolutely a martial art.

I'm a third degree black belt in American Kenpo. :cheesy: But I like to incorporate some Muay Thai into mine as well.

If this counts, I'm taking fencing lessons as well. 😉

Count me in...

Got 4 years of serious martial arts training in college...

Tae Kwon Do for 15 years.
Now partners in a Dojang and still loving it!!! :dogpile:

Not exactly normal, and perhaps doesn't count, but I've been doing semi-regular Viking combat displays (with mostly full contact - we do hit each other, but most hits will give you little more than a bruise if that) for the past four and a bit years of my life. While I've only been able to do it properly since I turned 16, I've done a vast amount of one on one training prior to that, and it's damned good excercise, amazing fun, and stupidly violent.

So far, I've been trained to use:
-Spear, two handed, no shield. Very easy to use, when you get the hang of it.
-Spear, two handed, shield. Not as easy to succeed with - you need to hunt in packs.
-Knife, no shield. Based mostly on speed, luck and feints. Also really useful in real life; it literally translates to stopping someone's hand getting within a certain distance of your body...
-Knife, with shield. Not so easy to use, relies a LOT on the other person doing something stupid. Easier with a smaller shield as opposed to a normal one.
-Axe, with shield. Cannot be used without. Great fun, but I'm only just learning to use it. More of a support weapon than anything else.

Really good excercise - you can only wave so many huge lumps of metal around without it affecting you 😛

I have a brown belt in Judo. This is my first post in like 4 months.I sustained a bad neck injury in January during a class and haven't been able to sit at my computer desk for extended periods of time.

What is your experience with neck injuries in Judo either yourself or others? All I can think about is going back but this feels like it's never gonna heal.

I dabble, have done on and off since I was 13. I had a couple of junior boxing bouts when I was a kid and I still do a bit here and there, I do a bit of muay thai and BJJ, and I'll try anything else I can get into.

Quite bad that no matter how Judo techniques aim to avoid head (or neck) injuries, any "randori" still can't avoid it. If it is a bad dislocation and not "treated" properly, chances are the injury would still heal but will remain displaced for a long period of time. Pain will always recur especially when the weather is cold. I had friends who had shoulder dislocations and suffered for quite sometime. Arm injuries are more likely easier to treat.

Immobilization is really necessary.

Well, when I lived in Japan I studied aikido, ninjitsu and kendo.
Nowadays, if I get time, I just swing the katana.

More therapy than exercise for me.

All martial arts in one form or another is time well spent.

Black belt in Tae Kwon Do, then the place burnt down due to the bakery next door catching on fire.

Also, six years of boxing.

I've got 8 years of Hapkido training. I left my Dojang a few years ago and have since incorporated elements of Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai into my style.

I am dying to get into martial arts. Now that I am consistenly at the gym working out and getting back into shape, I would LOVE to take some classes and pick up a few belts. Anyone nearby Philadelphia feel like training me in exchange for free videos? 😀

During randori is when it happened. If I make it back I'm going to stay away from it for a while and just work on my technique.Judo is so explosive,it only takes a split second to get caught off balance and if your not ready it's probably gonna hurt.

I have been doing martial arts for 20 years. I started when I was a wee one and now I teach classes in a couple locations around my community.
