Not exactly normal, and perhaps doesn't count, but I've been doing semi-regular Viking combat displays (with mostly full contact - we do hit each other, but most hits will give you little more than a bruise if that) for the past four and a bit years of my life. While I've only been able to do it properly since I turned 16, I've done a vast amount of one on one training prior to that, and it's damned good excercise, amazing fun, and stupidly violent.
So far, I've been trained to use:
-Spear, two handed, no shield. Very easy to use, when you get the hang of it.
-Spear, two handed, shield. Not as easy to succeed with - you need to hunt in packs.
-Knife, no shield. Based mostly on speed, luck and feints. Also really useful in real life; it literally translates to stopping someone's hand getting within a certain distance of your body...
-Knife, with shield. Not so easy to use, relies a LOT on the other person doing something stupid. Easier with a smaller shield as opposed to a normal one.
-Axe, with shield. Cannot be used without. Great fun, but I'm only just learning to use it. More of a support weapon than anything else.
Really good excercise - you can only wave so many huge lumps of metal around without it affecting you 😛
