Meet my new dog Murphy!

OMG!! Look at that FACE! He just makes you wanna jump through the screen and squeeze him in a big ol' squishy hug! He is soooooooooo cute!!!

My hat is off to you for rescuing a sweet poochie in need of a home from the shelter. I have more respect for you than you could know for that!! And congratulations on your precious new fur-baby!!

Thanks Mimi! One of my biggest weaknesses all my life has been the inability to enter pet stores or shelters because I'd look at all the animals and get all schmoopie. One of the things we stress on my show, when our friends from the shelter are on, is the REPSONSIBILITY you face when adopting a pet. Every time a movie or show comes out featuring a specific pooch (Beethoven, 101 Dalmations, etc.), families rush out to get one...not taking the time to learn about the particular traits of the dog, how much upkeep is needed, and how much of her personal life you're investing. It breaks my heart to see so many animals given up after people have second thoughts about their adoption.

On the bright side, the "Furry Fridays" segment on my show has resulted in adoptions for each animal we've featured. It's one of the best features I've ever done in radio...and one of the most emotionally rewarding.

I agree with you... the responsibility.. that is why I got a mini-pinn.. a small fiercly loyal dog that I can handle with my spinal issues, esp after surgeries-I cant have a dog that will drag me on my back literally or hurt me yet will defend me and be the lap dog I want. She is a handful right now but growing up. She is my lil girl and won my heart. Would not trade her for anything.

It really amazes me how naive some people are about what the responsibility and costs associated with having a dog. It is even more heartbreaking to see the number of dogs given by those people.

Sean, I can tell you that owning a dog is far more positive than negative and all the work is worth it. There is a real joy with the unconditional love you get from those animals. One of the things I most look forward to is when my dog is waiting to greet me when I come home from work. Every day, she gives me this smile that I can't resist. They really are like family.

That is absolutely awesome about your "Furry Fridays" segment!! I'm SO glad to hear every animal in need of a home featured on your show so far have been adopted. That just totally warms my soul in ways nothing else can.

I have a VERY hard time with shelters. Even driving past our local one makes me weepy. I can not bear the thought of all those precious animals stuck in cages, so desperately needing a loving family to keep them warm and safe. I want to adopt every single animal in there every time I go. We have 5 pets right now, so it's just not possible at this time, but we donate needed items and food to the shelter whenever we can. I feel like it's the least we can do. My 3 boy furbabies are starting to get up there in age (13, 12 and 12), and when their time comes to go to pet heaven (god how I dread even thinking about it....I've had each of em since they were babies), we've decided we're going to adopt a dog from the shelter. It's going to be sooo hard to walk out with just one though. Most likely we're going to choose an older dog, as they usually have the hardest time being adopted out and they need love every bit as much as the younguns.

I do agree with you on people not doing their research on pet breeds, then going out and buying a dog or adopting a dog that totally does not work for them and their lifestyles. I hate to think of how many dogs are surrendered just because of people jumping the gun, and finding out they can't keep up with the animals needs. It's just cruel and unfair. I have SO much respect for responsible pet owners.

Yikes...sorry for rambling! LOL!

GREAT point Sean, I am glad you said that. I am really concerned about the fate of some chiuauhuas after an upcoming "Beverly hills Chiuahua" movie comes out. There may be a lot of chiuahua buying and dumping, because some of those dogs are tempermental, and they can fight like tazmanian devils when they become nervous or defensive.

There was a mentally disturbed old lady who was featured in the news recently who bred and hoarded dozens of chiuahuas in her cluttered home, and they became so vicious and pack oriented that it was near impossible for many of them to find adequate homes.

i'm glad you brought this up, Sean, and what a cool name for your dog...the name "Murphy" fits him well.....:wavingguy

The purebred ones also only cling to about one or two people and that's it. Everyone else is their enemy if they get too close.

Dogs are smart and sensative as well.. with me, I have to keep my neck in certain possitions esp when laying down. My saydee will get on my chest or lay next to me on couch on the side and put her head under my chin to keep my neck in proper alignment. HUbby had said there have been times when I was in alot of pain and moaning in my sleep, saydee will jump up and snuggle her head under mine to prop up my head then I stop moaning..
When I was ill with pneumonia&bronchitis she layed on my chest the whole time not with her whole body but just enough to keep it warm and did the same when my hubby cought it, like she instincitively knew she had to keep us warm. They know when you dont feel well and do there best to try to help you even if it is not leaving your side to watch over you like we do when they are hurt or ill.
