MIT coed with fake bomb 'art' arrested

BOSTON - Troopers arrested an MIT student at gunpoint Friday after she walked into Logan International Airport wearing a computer circuit board and wiring on her sweatshirt. Authorities call it a fake bomb; she called it art.

Star Simpson's attorney said the charges against her were an overreaction, but authorities expressed amazement that someone would wear such a device eight months after a similar scare in Boston, and six years after two of the jets hijacked in the Sept. 11 attacks took off from Logan.

"I'm shocked and appalled that somebody would wear this type of device to an airport," said State Police Maj. Scott Pare, the airport's commanding officer.

The terminal was not evacuated and flights were not affected, airport officials said.

Simpson, 19, of Lahaina, Hawaii, has expertise in electronics and even received a Congressional citation for her work in robotics, according to her lawyer.

She wore the white circuit board on her chest over a black hooded sweatshirt, Pare said at a news conference. The battery-powered rectangular device had nine flashing lights, and Simpson had Play-Doh in her hands, he said.

Two phrases that looked hand-drawn — "Socket to me" and "Course VI" — were written on the back of Simpson's sweatshirt, which authorities displayed to the media. Course VI appears to refer to MIT's major of electrical engineering and computer science.

"She said that it was a piece of art and she wanted to stand out on career day," Pare said. "She claims that it was just art, and that she was proud of the art and she wanted to display it."

There was a career fair at the university on Thursday, according to the university's Web site.

Simpson was charged with possessing a hoax device. A not guilty plea was entered for her and she was released on $750 bail.

During the hearing, Simpson smiled as she entered wearing a T-shirt and sandals. After she posted bail, she left in a taxi with a man who identified himself as her boyfriend, but neither would answer more questions from reporters.

Prosecutor Wayne Margolis had requested $5,000 bail, saying Simpson showed a total disregard for airport security concerns.

Ross Schreiber, who was appointed to represent Simpson, said she was not a risk to flee, cooperated with authorities and was a good student with no prior convictions. He said they would fight the charges.

"I would characterize it as almost being paranoid at this point," he said of authorities' response.

He said she had gone to the airport to meet her boyfriend. "She was there for legitimate purposes," Schreiber said.

Simpson was arrested about 8 a.m. outside Terminal C, home to United Airlines, Jet Blue and other carriers.

A Massachusetts Port Authority staffer manning an information booth in the terminal became suspicious when Simpson — wearing the device — approached to ask about an incoming flight, Pare said. Simpson then walked outside, and the staffer notified a nearby trooper.

The trooper, joined by others with submachine guns, confronted her at a traffic island in front of the terminal.

"She was immediately told to stop, to raise her hands and not to make any movement, so we could observe all her movements to see if she was trying to trip any type of device," Pare said. "Had she not followed the protocol, we might have used deadly force."

He added, "She's lucky to be in a cell as opposed to the morgue."

Pare said Simpson had taken a subway to the airport, but he was not sure if she had the device on at that time.

Boston was the focus of a security scare Jan. 31 when dozens of battery-powered devices that featured a character making an obscene gesture with a finger were discovered in various locations. Bomb squads were deployed and some transportation links were closed temporarily. They turned out to be a promotion for the Cartoon Network. Two men were charged in that incident, but prosecutors dropped the charges after they apologized and performed community service.

Simpson was a member of MIT's swimming and diving team in 2006, according to the team's Web site.

She is the secretary of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Electrical Research Society, her lawyer said. She is a graduate of the Hawaii Preparatory Academy, a private boarding school, has won school prizes for chemistry and leadership and had received a Congressional citation for her work in robotics, Schreiber said.

MIT issued a statement saying the school is cooperating with authorities. The statement said: "As reported to us by authorities, Ms. Simpson's actions were reckless and understandably created alarm at the airport."

Pare praised the booth attendant and said the incident is a reminder of the terrorism threat confronting the civil aviation system.

"In this day and age, the threat continues to be there," he said.

A classic case of an ill-advised, naive attempt at a political statement.

Dunno about that yet. Depends on what, if anything, she was trying to say with her art. But "an ill-advised, naive attempt at a political statement"? This one's still the contemporary classic of that genre:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JI0pbT_Z5F4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JI0pbT_Z5F4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Furthermore, a good example of a seemingly intelligent person doing a very stupid thing.

Yup.

Stories like this one discourage me from having children. Anyway, I'm becoming more and more emotionally desensitized to hearing about things like this. Is that wrong?

"Had she not followed the protocol, we might have used deadly force."

He (State Police Maj. Scott Pare) added, "She's lucky to be in a cell as opposed to the morgue."

My sentiments exactly.

What the hell was she thinking?!? 'Oh, I'm going to go to the airport wearing my art that looks like a bomb.'

Too bad stupidity in of itself isn't a crime. 😡

An airport is not the place for jokes, hoaxes, spoofs, or art about explosive devices.

It's the same as the classic, yelling "Fire!!" in a crowded theater. What if some onlooker had screamed, "She's got a bomb! She's got a bomb!" and caused a stampede?

That is huge news here since she is from the state of Hawaii, she was from Maui, but went to high school here on the Big Island. A lot of her teachers and friends have been interviewed by the local news. They all say she was a very smart girl and they can’t explain how she could do something so stupid. In this day and age, that is about the dumbest thing you could do, how could a person not think that that kind of reaction from security would happen. The girls’ family talked to her and then to the local news, they stated that she was surprised that security acted like that with guns drawn and everything, but what the hell was she thinking. I don’t like to talk down about someone, but damn girl.

Aloha, John

Admittedly, this was not a stroke of genius on the part of this college student, but I must be reading this article a little differently from other people. I don't get the impression that she had created her art to be a 'fake bomb;' that was the authorities' interpretation, and who knows what kind of artistic training they've had. It sounds to me as if she decided to wear a computer circuit board on her clothing (for career day) and made the mistake of going to the airport with it on. The notion that she created something to look like a bomb to make some sort of statement or as an airport joke is not supported by this article.

I wonder if perhaps she didn't choose to do this simply for the free publicity..? She doesn't seem like she would be truly reckless or ignorant given her stats, and this soon after the anniversary of 9/11, it's doubtful she would think no-one would notice a device of that nature at an airport, especially that airport. I'm not seeing a "whoops!" on her part here--more of a "hey, watch this!" instead.

Truthfully, she wouldn't be the first artist to take a calculated risk in order to create the possibility of cashing in on the dividends at a later date. She's got her 15 minutes now--once the bruhauhau has died down a bit, she should have an opportunity to make it pay a bit.

I can honestly say that if she were a relation of mine, the judge and the court system would look like Club Med compared to what she'd face from me for being so totally thoughtless, though. :ranty:

I want to slap this kid!

Not out of anger, but just to smarten her up.

Jesus, girl! do you have any idea what you just did? I mean, if this was just some pretentious childish thing for publicity or a statement that I and 99.9% of the free world honestly isn't getting, then you need a FEW smacks! Do you know what could have happened to you? You could have been shot!

Or worse.

Wow. Some of you people need to take a Ritalin pill, seriously.

No, it wasn't too bright of her to walk into an airport with an electronic-looking device.

However, it also was pretty retarded for people to react the way they did.

"Hey, Mr. Policeman? That girl has a little panel with battery operated LEDs on it. Can you like, arrest her?"

Fucking morons. And everyone who's yelling "She should be jailed!" and "She needs to be slapped for this stunt!" isn't any better, either. Relax, folks.

Paranoia.

Actually, i would have preferred to see her ass beat with a night stick. maybe take out a knee cap or two. then next time, common sense would prevail with her.

What would have happened if someone had mistook the 'electronic-looking device' as a bomb or a bomb detonator and had yelled "She's got a bomb!" Imagine the panic that would have ensued because she was too stupid to realize that someone would've mistake her 'artwork' as a bomb.

Yes, she ought to be slapped for being that stupid. How could she not think that her piece of art would be seen as a bomb? She's lucky she didn't get shot.

Honestly how would you have reacted if you saw someone walking in an airport wearing that? Would you just ignore it and risk the chance that it might be a bomb? Or would you report it?

I prefer paranoia over ignorance.

Common Sense

Someone who is "book smart" doesn't automatically mean they have good common sense. I know many "intellectuals" who have little to no common sense.

It sucks that we live in a time where we have to question whether or not it's appropriate to wear electronic panels with blinking LED lights attached to our sweaters. Hell, I must own THREE shirts like that myself! Hahaha... But really, anyone with common sense would've just unplugged the 9-volt, thrown on a Red Sox jersey and saved it for the holidays when everyone is wearing those light-up Christmas tree shirts.

Of course, don't wear those to the airport either! Too bad... they're wicked cool!

Exactly! all these liberal college students and teachers think their are so above the common man, when in reality as ive said all along, a liberals weakness is their common sense.

Where in any of the articles is her political ideology listed, and why does it matter?

Yes. Police pointing guns at people wearing something that resembles a bomb in an airport is going to far. And jail time or paying a fine for causing a bomb scare is crazy too!

IT DOESN'T RESEMBLE A BOMB. It looks nothing LIKE a bomb. I could see if someone was concerned and said, hey, what is that? And when she explained it, they told her to either cover it or take it off.

I think this speaks to the ability of people to overreact at airports nowadays.

She's clearly a smart girl. So smart she probably wasn't aware how supposedly intelligent people could mistake a battery with a wire and some LEDs attached to as a fake bomb....brazenly pinned to the outside of her shirt no less. Still, seeing as how she probably couldn't wear it through a metal detector anyway, it doesn't make much sense to attach it to your clothes before going to an airport.

I personally try to never underestimate people's ability to act without thinking. It applies to the girl to some extent, but it goes double "security personnel" in this current climate of fear in which we live.

Well I went on holiday to Florida over the summer, I left from Glasgow airport and landed at Florida, Standford airport.

Security was tight but not as bad as I thought it would be (considering the Glasgow attempted bombing happened the previous week). But what did surprise me was the amount of people at both airports who can’t follow even simple instructions. There are signs and even staff stating what can and can’t be taken aboard notable on the Liquid side. This was more so at the Standford Airport. Yet around 40% of the people when I was their had just that, either bottled water, toothpaste etc that they weren’t allowed in with and had to be binned. This cause major delays which doesn’t help the staff their. The reason I am bringing this up is to let you know how bad it is in Airports security needs to be tighter but in a way that is more relaxed for passengers and people who go to airports need more common sense.

Well I think the peace of art is in poor taste, true a circuit board with a few LED’s isn’t a bomb, but could a detonator look like a circuit board with some LED’s ? well yes it can. Even if it couldn’t it is something you don’t play around with.

But then again her aim wasn’t to travel but meet her boyfriend and there is a difference to your attitude and view (or at least there is with me), I have meet people in the past at airports and to be honest I haven’t really thought much about it in regard to security (eg I could wear a t-shirt saying “I am bomb technician if you see me running, try to keep up”) but if I was to travel through the airport which I have done my view changed I was very careful in what I wore what I took with me etc. She probably wanted to show off the sweatshirt to her boyfriend and didn’t think much more beyond that.

I think airport security as a whole needs to be redone, as it is different meeting people than travelling. When you travel you will tend to check the airport website to check up on the travelling restrictions etc. Also to point out I am guessing she did wear this fine on career day, a place I am guessing that if it was a bomb would have made a good target and yet not once was she stopped but at the airport it is with full guns. Not saying the airport security was in any way in the wrong but only you can see why she might have thought little of it. You travel freely with a bit of clothing without any hassle then you goto meet a friend at a place then its guns. Not everyone knows about the changes on airport security and while Standford airport at the scanning area does have good signs and staff telling you what to do and not to do. Upto that point their was little in the way of signs except “don’t leave luggage unattended”.

The fact that after the situation was explained they are still going to trial well ……

Someone was concerned. When she went to a kiosk someone asked her what it was and she walked away.
