Who are, and were, everyone's most and least favorite sports announcers?

At the top of my list is NBA lead announcer Mike Breen. I've been listing to him since he was a Knicks radio announcer in the 1990s, and I confess to sometimes having turned down the sound on the TV, and turning on the radio, because I liked his call of the game better than lead announcer Marv Albert at the time.

The late Bob Murphy. As Mets fans and many baseball fans know, Mr Murphy announced Mets games from their inception in 1962, until 2003. Again, I often used to turn down the sound of the TV when watching the Mets and Braves, because I liked how Murphy announced, better than lead TV announcers Tim Mccarver and Ralph Kiner.

The late Skip Caray, as well as Pete Van Weiren, and Ernie Johnson Sr, when they all announced for TBS. The Braves weren't very good in the 1980s, but I used to like listening to their calls of the games. In the 1990s, when the Braves improved, Caray often used to exhude excitement after a good ballgame.

Mets lead announcer Gary Cohen. I dont like the Mets, but Cohen is a very good play by play man.

Gary Thorne. I used to listen to him on the radio when he was with the Mets, when I was in my teens. He's a fine announcer, and exciting. I love his calls of "Goodbye, Homerun".

My least favorite announcers.

1. Ralph Kiner. I know he still broadcasts Mets games occasionally on TV, but I have to wonder, how this guy has stayed in broadcasting as long as he has. Kiner makes many mistakes, and I find his calls of the games to be boring.

2. The late Phil Rizzuto. When I lived in NY, I used to watch Yankees games on WPIX. His saying "Holy Cow" every two seconds, was annoying.

So that's my list. Other opinions?

Just off the top of my head...

College Sports =

College football = Keith Jackson

College Basketball = Dick Vitale , Billy Packer , Al McGuire

Pro Sports

NFL = Pat Summerall , John Madden , Al Michaels , Don Meredith

MLB = Vin Scully , Joe Garagiola , Mark Holtz , Mel Allen

Golf = Ken Venturi

Tennis = John McEnroes, Bud Collins , Mary Carillo

multi sports announcers

Brent Musberger , Dick Enberg , Curt Gowdy , Jim Nantz , Jack Whitaker , Chris Schenkel , Verne Lundquist , Don Criqui , Jim McKay , Dwight Stones , Dick stockton

Announcers I can' t stand ...

Tim McCarver ...one pompous S. O. B. , Marv Albert , Tony Kornheiser , Joe Theisman , Lou Holtz , Steven A. Smith

NFL: Madden and Summerall. Accept no substitutes! (Enberg and Lundquist are good, but not Madden/Summerall good. I also have a bias toward the Pittsburgh announcing crew including the late Myron Cope, but they're nowhere near as good as Madden/Summerall by any measure)
NBA: Marv Albert (nothing better than hearing him in the 90's screaming---Mike-kal Jor-dan---YES!)
MLB: Dave Niehaus, Harry Caray, Harry Kalas
NHL: Jim Hughson (The Vs. guys are good, too, but I much prefer Hughson's voice and play-by-play style... so smoooooth.)
College Basketball: Gus Johnson. Accept no substitutes!
College Football: Keith Jackson. Absolutely accept no substitutes!!!

Favorite announcer: Vin Scully
Knowledgeable, interesting, and fun to listen to, every game he broadcasts.

Least favorite announcer: Howard Cousell
Conceited, pretentious, and an arrogant fool.

Mils, I agree with you about Cosell. He was an arrogant ass, and I couldn't stand his speaking voice.

Mitch

Cosell was one of the first reporters to bring an analytic, journalistic sense to the job. It's something that is not part of sports anymore. Most so called "reporting" nowadays is just some pinhead conforming to a "politically correct" formula, so one doesn't get fired. I didn't like Cosell in his day, but compared to what is out there now, he was at least a step up!

Actually of all of the current ones I like Keith Hernandez... On one play he may give you the the batter's perspective, the umpires view, what the third base coach should have done, what the manager's thinking was and how the ground crew cuts the grass making the ball move slower on bunts..."Pinhead's conforming"... I was more or less thinking of ESPN anchors.

Best announcers: Curt Gowdy, Joe Garigiola, Joe Buck, Al Michaels, Keith Jackson, Troy Aikman, Kevin Harlan, Mitch Holthus (KC Chiefs), Mike Shannon (Stl Cards), Bob Davis (KU Hoops), Tony Kubek.

Hate: Chris Berman, Tony Kornholer, Randy Cross, Dan Dierdorf, Dick "Duke" Vitale, Billy Packer, Stuart Scott...or most ESPN honks.

Best Baseball Announcers: The late Bob Murphy, the late Lindsey Nelson, Keith Jackson, Ernie Harwell, Mel Allen, Tim McCarver, Ralph Kiner, Gary Thorne, Bob Costas, Jim Kaat, Marty Brennemann ( Reds announcer ), Gary Cohen, Dave Neihaus ( Mariners announcer ), Bill White ( NYY announcer in the 70's ), Jerry Coleman ( Padres announcers ), the late Curt Gowdy, the late Jack Buck and the BEST is Vin Scully.

The Worst Baseball Announcers: Joe Buck, the late Phil Rizzuto, Ken " Hawk " Harrelson, Chip Carey, Michael Kay, John Sterling, Tom Seaver, Fran Healey.

Best Hockey Announcers: Mike " Doc " Emrick, Howie Rose, Chico Resch.

Worst Hockey Announcers: Mickey Redmond ( Detroit Red Wings ) is just plain awful.

Best Basketball Announcers: Marv Albert, Mike Breen, Ian Eagle.

Worst Basketball Announcers: Walt " Clyde " Frazier, Bill Walton.

Best Football Announcers: Phil Simms, Troy Aikman, Jim Nantz, Daryl Moose Johnson, the late Merlin Olsen, Dick Enberg, Curt Gowdy, the late Lindsey Nelson, Pat Summerall, John Madden ( when partnered with Summerall ), Howard Cosell ( had it not been for him we would not have Primetime Football ), Hank Stram.

Worst Football Announcers: Joe Buck, Joe Namath.

First of all, I don't like Tom Heinsohn. He's so irritating to hear. And I like Jeff Van Gundy.

Most and least favorite sports announcers

I like Joe Buck for baseball.

In football Troy Aikman is pretty good, and I kind of like Chucky (aka Jon Gruden) on the ESPN Monday Night Football crew.

Can't stand Tony Kornheiser for anything.

One thing I really enjoyed was, when my parents would let me stay up until halftime on Monday Night Football, was the recap of the previous day's highlights narrarated by none other than Howard Cosell.

Gary Thorne. I used to listen to him on the radio when he was with the Mets, when I was in my teens. He's a fine announcer, and exciting. I love his calls of "Goodbye, Homerun".

Gary Thorne was my teacher in broadcasting school in Bangor, ME. He was the play by play guy for the Maine Guides, Cleveland's AA team in 1985, before he got the Mets job. He was on my resume as a reference for a couple years.

But to answer this post's question, I'm a native New Englander and remember Dick Stockton and Ken Harrelson doing the Sox games on tv as a kid so everytime I hear their voices, I flashback to those days, but Vin Scully is the best baseball play by play guy that I've ever listened to. He used to do the Saturday game of the week. Basketball is Johnny Most. We used to turn down the volume on the tv and listen to Johnny Most. It was hilarious how biased he was but we loved it.

I appreciate ESPN as an all-sports network but if an employee does not conform to their PC bullshit they are fined and eventually fired... I would not be surprised to tune in on MLK day and all the anchors have #42 inked on their foreheads.

Wow, Jerry, that's awesome about Thorne being your broadcasting teacher. As you may know, he's an announcer for the Baltimore Orioles on TV now. I dont watch the Orioles often, but I do catch a game from time to time.

To me, Marv Albert is just irritating. His calls of YESSSS! a million times a game, sounds like he's having sex in the booth. Uncool, and not professional sounding.

I didnt start listening to him until I moved here 11 years ago, but I thought that another fine announcer was the late Harry Kalas, who broadcasted Phillies games on radio and TV for many years.

Mitch

Yea, I listened on line last weekend to a Sox-Orioles game and Thorne & Palmer were the announcers. I did know he worked for them as I follow his career, wondering if I could have used knowing him to break in. I did college games but never pursued it.

I really don't like Tim McCarver. He is a master of the obvious and watching games on Fox bug me. Jerry Remy, I neglected to mention before, is my favorite color guy. He makes me laugh.
