Who are, and were, everyone's most and least favorite sports announcers?
At the top of my list is NBA lead announcer Mike Breen. I've been listing to him since he was a Knicks radio announcer in the 1990s, and I confess to sometimes having turned down the sound on the TV, and turning on the radio, because I liked his call of the game better than lead announcer Marv Albert at the time.
The late Bob Murphy. As Mets fans and many baseball fans know, Mr Murphy announced Mets games from their inception in 1962, until 2003. Again, I often used to turn down the sound of the TV when watching the Mets and Braves, because I liked how Murphy announced, better than lead TV announcers Tim Mccarver and Ralph Kiner.
The late Skip Caray, as well as Pete Van Weiren, and Ernie Johnson Sr, when they all announced for TBS. The Braves weren't very good in the 1980s, but I used to like listening to their calls of the games. In the 1990s, when the Braves improved, Caray often used to exhude excitement after a good ballgame.
Mets lead announcer Gary Cohen. I dont like the Mets, but Cohen is a very good play by play man.
Gary Thorne. I used to listen to him on the radio when he was with the Mets, when I was in my teens. He's a fine announcer, and exciting. I love his calls of "Goodbye, Homerun".
My least favorite announcers.
1. Ralph Kiner. I know he still broadcasts Mets games occasionally on TV, but I have to wonder, how this guy has stayed in broadcasting as long as he has. Kiner makes many mistakes, and I find his calls of the games to be boring.
2. The late Phil Rizzuto. When I lived in NY, I used to watch Yankees games on WPIX. His saying "Holy Cow" every two seconds, was annoying.
So that's my list. Other opinions?
