Man, that stinks out loud. It's happened to me. With my current phone any number on my contact list is sent to my T-Mobile account so I can retrieve them there.

A) my provider is a local company that doesn't have data plans yet.

B) Aside from making calls and text messages, I wouldn't use anything the iPhone can do
