Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the French Open. She is number 2 in the world in women's tennis, and was one of the favorites to win.
She sent out a tweet a couple of days ago saying she wouldn't participate in the media sessions after matches stating that she is asked the same questions over and over, giving the same answer, and it is starting to wear on her mental state and thus the quality of her game.
The French Open countered with stating that if she doesn't participate in the media sessions, she will be subject to fines and subsequent disqualification, thus prompting her withdraw.
The USTA has sent out a statement saying that this policy is being enforced in all major tournaments. So maybe we've seen the last of a really talented tennis player, which is sad.
It is tough enough to train enough to be an elite athlete. You have to be in a certain place mentally as it is. But when subject to the media after a grueling match, game, whatever, it can mess with your mental state and your game.
I realize that most of us say being paid to play a game is a privilege and something that is an easy life, but I don't think most of us fathom how much time and work and effort it takes to achieve that level. It is something that can create a fragile psyche and the reason sports psychology is such a hot topic.
