On the night that Ross left his old office at the now former RossShell company, he was having a bit of trouble sleeping.
Kayley awakened in the middle of the night, and said. "I know you;'re up. I see you staring at the ceiling. What's wrong?" Kayley asked.
"I'm just thinking, Kale. You know me, my mind works., I'm trying to loosely plan in my mind what would be a realistic plan for RossCo , that is healthy for most important our marriage, my health, and the company. I know that RossShell got way out of control, and I promise I will never let that happen again. Yet, I think we both know that I can't just go into the office every day and have giant accounts, oil and gas, and Tim and Dave. I want to pick up some accounts. I'm figuring, that,. realistically, I would eventually like to see RossCo be, about fifty percent the size that RossShell was, even if that means taking another office on the same floor and breaking through a wall, or an office on a different floor. Does that sound fair, and a compromise?" Ross asked.
"Absolutely. I know that the first days of RossCo might be a difficult adjustment. I have absolutely no problem with you slowly building a company. I think you need to look at it this way, Ross. RossCo is your way to make a living. Even though you own the company, it's your job Please don;t make it the obsession that RossShell was to you, For your physical and emotional health, and the health of our marriage, and our relationship" Kayley said.
Ross held Kayley and kissed her. "I Love You to the end of the earth. Thank You for not leaving me during the worst days of RossShell. I know that during some of times I was a miserable human being, and a horrible husband to live with. I had to get rid of RossShell. If I didn't, I think you would have walked out that door. If that had ever happened, I would have had to pack it all in. I could not have lived without you. Life would not have been worth living" Ross said.
"There were times I wanted to leave you. There were times I figured I would stay forever, and we would just have a miserable marriage. My love for you was and is too deep just to leave because my husband was obsessed with his work and his company. " Kayley said.
Then Kayley said. "Ross, try to go to sleep. Wake up whenever you do. Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life, and the first day of RossCo. Set the alarm for whenever you want, and go in no earlier than 9. Set up the office, and just talk to whoever calls. " Kayley said.
The next morning, Ross got up, put on a grey suit with his tie loose, kissed Kayley goodbye as she had a school day off, and left for the office about 8 in an Uber, arriving a few minutes before 9. He went upstairs, and the staff was there. After everyone said their good mornings, Ross said.
"I was talking with Kayley last night. First off. Thanks to all of you who are staying with me. I offer my sincere apologies if I was ever a difficult boss and a jerk to work for during the worst days of RossShell. Just to let all of you know, I was a jerk to Kayley as well. RossShell and all the things that happened there, turned me into almost an obsessed maniac. I forgot that most important , it was everyone's way, including mine, of making a living, it was a job, a business, and not an obsession. This time, the new RossCo will be different. I am going to try to be much calmer and patient. I also intend to build this new company slowly and carefully. It will not be nearly as large or out of control as RossShell was, for the good of everyone in this office. It will eventually grow, but I'm going to be more careful., I know these first days will be an adjustment for all of us, including me. Most important, we are a team, working for the good of ourselves, and the company. If anyone needs to talk to me, I'm going to be much more approachable, and open, and not as nervous, angry, or uptight. The obession with RossShell that I had, made those bad qualities come out in me. Here is to the first day of RossCo, and the first day of the rest of all of our lives" Ross said,.
On that first day, in addition to setting up the office, Ross called David Branner, and asked him to please send Ross ideas of what David wanted Ross to do for David. Ross promised he would get to work on the campaign. Ross also called Tim Patrick. Ross had finished two months campaign for Tim ahead of time before he left RossShell so that Ross would have some time to catch his breath in the new office. Ross also called Steve and Fritz. Ross wanted to spend the first week of the new RossCo in New York just dealing with David's ideas, spending time with Kayley, and setting up the office., Ross knew he would have to go to Texas and or Oklahoma about a week to ten days later to meet with investors on oil deals with Fritz and Steve. Ross left the office qat 530, jumped in an Uber, and walked in the door at 625, Kayley was surprised to see him.
"Wonderful Ross. How was your first day of RossCo?" Kayley said.
"It was fine. I made a little speech. Thanked everyone for staying with me. I called Tim, Dave, Steve and Fritz, and made a trip to Texas for next week, two to three days maximum., I want to spend this first week being here with you, getting used to the new office, and setting it up and the new company" Ross said.
Kayley gave Ross a big kiss. "You see, maybe you have learned a lesson. You did exactly what we discussed. You went in, and treated it like a company, and a job, and not an obsession. I know that there will be bumps and the road, and you will get angry and frustrated about work. Everyone does, even CEOs who own their companies. Cross each bridge as you come to it. As long as you stay on the right path, you will do just fine" Kayley said.
When Ross got into bed on the first night of RossCo , he did not have that much trouble falling asleep. He managed to sleep through most of the night.
Had what Kayley told Ross really worked? Would Ross make his company like a job and not an obsession?
That remained to be seen.
