LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson (news) is replacing high-profile attorneys Mark Geragos and Benjamin Brafman in his child molestation case, the lawyers told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The pop superstar's new lawyer will be Thomas Mesereau Jr., another well-known criminal defense attorney who represented actor Robert Blake (news) in his murder case until they recently parted company, citing irreconcilable differences.

"Based on recent developments and discussions with various persons in the Jackson camp, it became clear that it would be best if Mark and I decided to step down," Brafman said. "And that's what we elected to do."

Asked why, Brafman said, "For reasons we choose not to discuss publicly."

He added, "We both wish Michael well."

Mesereau, who has been meeting with Jackson in the Orlando, Fla., area, declined to answer questions Sunday. "I'll have no comment on the developments until I appear in court Friday," he said, referring to a pretrial hearing where Jackson is expected to be arraigned.

Jackson's spokeswoman, Raymone K. Bain, said she was unaware of the change when asked about it by a reporter.

Geragos, who was in Northern California handling the Scott Peterson (news - web sites) murder case on Sunday, said he, Brafman and Mesereau will notify Santa Barbara County Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville of the substitution of counsel during a conference call Monday. He declined to discuss reasons for the change.

Dana Cole, an attorney who has worked closely with Mesereau on cases including Blake's, said Mesereau was approached by Jackson soon after he was charged with child molestation. He said Mesereau was unwilling to take the case at the time because he was tied up with the Blake case.

"Michael Jackson has always been very impressed with the pro bono work and contributions Tom has made in the African-American community," Cole said.

Santa Barbara District Attorney Thomas Sneddon had no comment, said Jason Karpf of Tellem Worldwide, a firm handling media inquiries for Sneddon in the Jackson case.

Loyola University law professor Laurie Levenson said the change could mean Jackson lost faith in his attorneys, or they in him. She also said Geragos and Brafman may have previously agreed to take the case only through its preliminary stages.

Levenson said Geragos' work on the Peterson case may be a factor. The case will not only take up much of Geragos' time, but it also could have made it more difficult for Jackson to find an unbiased jury, she said.

Jackson's case moved into a new phase last week when a grand jury secretly indicted him on child molestation charges. Contents of the indictment are not yet known and will be disclosed at his arraignment.

Jackson, 45, was originally charged with seven counts of lewd or lascivious conduct involving a child under 14 and with administering an intoxicant, reportedly wine, to a child under 14.

The indictment means that a grand jury has decided there is probable cause to hold Jackson for trial.

Jackson is free on $3 million bail and recently has been staying at a Florida compound with his children

Yea they probnably both think hes guilty as sin and Jacko thinks they arent going to try to help him to the best of their abilities

IMHO, he would need a miracle worker as a lawyer to get off this time.

Man oh man, when it comes to big, blazing car wrecks, this one is gonna be spectacular when it impacts.....

The Sean Man

Mark Geragos and Benjamin Brafman say they 'stepped down'.
Jacko says he canned 'em.

The bloke is a sicko.........

......he admitts he likes to sleep with children, other than his own. The guy is crying out to legitamise his sick behaviour. He thinks he can do this because he has made some "pop records". If it was some guy living next to you or me, in a regular job, he would be jailed by now.

This is an extreme example of the same desease that seems to infect many "pop stars" and "film stars", the belief that because they are famous they have the right to be exused many of the normal requirements of life. Jacko thinks he can get away with this kind of sick behaviour, but on a much less contraversial level, many "famous" folk think they have the right to give us the benifit of their wisdom on political matters and world affairs.

They feel that their success in the entertainment business gives them the right to tell the rest of us how to live our lives and who to vote for. Sorry folks but I just dont buy it, these peoples views are not worth any more than yours or mine. In fact i would think often our views are worth more.

My view on Jacko is that he is (sorry, was) a great dancer, and a mediocre singer, who relied heavily on Quincy Jones to make him what he became. Look what happened to him after he split with Q. Quincy Jones is the main man in whole Jacko industry. He is the "main man".
