New Trek film

New word is that:

1) JJ Abrams is PRODUCING, not directing.

2) It will NOT be a prequel featuring young Kirk and Spock.

JJ said that people took a few words he said, and really blew it out of proportion.

What is gonna be real interesting about this up and coming movie is that Spock was already a member of Star Fleet and was under the command of Captain Pike before Kirk took over the Enterprise.
So... how are they gonna meet at the acadamy???
They could still have met and schooled at the academy together. Years later, while Spock was a Commander under Captain Pike, perhaps Kirk was a Commander under another Captain. Pike goes back to Thalos III. Kirk gets promoted as the new Captain of the Enterprise, reunited with his old pal Spock. I think it's doable.

Problem is, as a Vulcan, Spock is significantly older than Kirk... unless he went to the Academy really, really late.

For what it's worth...

Stupid Nemesis broke my heart. I'm still in denial about Data being dead. The way I see it, Nemesis was such a pile... how much worse can it get?

That's a good point. Vulcans enjoy a considerably longer lifespan. But considering that Spock interacts with Picard some 75-80 years later, it stands to reason that his association with Kirk occured in his "youth," for lack of a better term. Also, the Vulcans' longer lifespan might equate to longer durations of childhood and adolescence. In other words, while humans are considered adults at age 21....Vulcans may not reach adulthood until age 30 or 40.

I agree, that's no way to leave the mythology hanging...with Data being dead. It kind of reminds me of when Spock dies in the Wrath of Khan. The next movie was devoted to his return. Mad Magazine lyricist Frank Jacobs put it this way:
In Star Trek III the crew set out to bring Spock back alive.
They knew that if they failed there'd be no sequels IV and V.
Spock comes to life, but strange to say, his memory was shot,
Which probably was just as well, considering the plot.
The thing that bothered me about Nemesis, and what I consider a major plot oversight was the utter shock exhibited by the Enterprise senior staff at discovering the android B4. "Oh my God! An android that looks just like Data!! How can this be?!!"

Uh...Hello? Anybody remember Lore? Data's evil twin brother, from the episodes "Datalore," "Brothers," and the two-part episode, "Descent"? Nobody even so much as airs this possibility. They just assemble away. If Wesley Crusher had been there, HE would have remembered Lore. 😛

Tech they alluded to data not being dead since all his memories were downloaded into B4, yes he is not as advanced and doesnt aspire, it means tech he could be alive still in theory, similar to spock coming back but not being "fully" back cuz he had the memories but not the actual lived experiences

Well, some people see it as a cheat, but if I had my way about the Star Trek: Assignment Earth, we could bring Data (and Kirk) back easily.

See, with both Seven can come grab them in the nick of time. Data he can snatch in that second between firing the phaser and the ship blowing up. Then he can take Data back to the 20th century, use Ageis technology to make Data look completely human, and after he gets Data to help him save Earth, he can send Data off to live anonomously for awhile on Risa. Then a dying Gary Seven can disguise himself as Kirk and switch places with Kirk, also sent to Risa, when Picard isn't looking. So Seven, about to die anyway, is the one killed and buried while Kirk and Data are wacky roommates somewhere on Risa, the love planet. Then they can go rescue Spock from Romulous - cause with the Reman uprising, Spock's got to be in trouble!

Guess what! You got me curious enough to do some research... you are absolutely right about the ages... in fact... Kirk is/was younger than Spock by only three years! And... as I stand corrected... they WERE at the acadamy at the same time! As you said drew... it is very doable!

Hmm.. I stand corrected then. That is doable and doesn't break ST canon like Berman & Braga enjoy doing.

I must have been thinking of Tuvok, he served on Captain Sulu's Excelsior. So he's the old Vulcan I was thinking of.

I'm hardly a Trek fan, but Abrams being involved interests me

“Space the final frontier……” will once again be explored by the Star Ship Enterprise.

Yes, Star Trek fans. Variety is reporting that Paramount will resurrect its ‘Star Trek’ movie franchise.

And not only will we get to see the early days of James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock. Scotty and Dr. “Bones” Mcoy but we will see how (some of them) they first met at the Starfleet Academy. The plot also calls for fans to experience the crew’s first outer space mission.

This will be the 11th Trek feature. "Star Trek" has been Hollywood's most resilient performer other than James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.

Banking on the success of the upcoming ‘Mission: Impossible III’ (‘MI3’), Paramount has tapped J.J. Abrams to helm and produce the 11th installment. Assisting on the production side will be the extremely successful producing team from the ‘Lost’ TV series, Damon Lindel and Bryan Burk.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci co-writers from ‘MI3’ will work with Abrams on the screenplay.

The original TV series was created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966 and ended in 1969.

No start date for production was announced however Paramount said the movie will be in your local multiplex sometime in 2008.

Hiya! :bunny:

Oh yeah! I remember that! I have to admit that movie did strike me as way over the top in terms of getting rid of everything and so many characters. Talk about long debates with friends about why they went and killed off such a main character unnecessarily... I thought anyways -still do too. :sowrong:

Still, more Trek can't be all bad! I'm anxiously awaiting the movie! :couch:

Many blessings,

I wouldn't worry too much - Shatner promptly wrote a Trek book in which Romulan agents clone him, bringing himself back to life. So Kirk is still alive, although I am not sure his book is considered "canon".

Yes!

I am glad they are bringing it back, im a huge trekkie (uh oh, now ive "outed" myself), i didnt mind nemesis, but the box office returns were dismal and they could have done so much more with the enterprise TV show that they chose not to. and im totally nitpicky about tech stuff, but wasnt the u.s.s. enterprise-E armed with quantum torpedoes (much more powerful than the standard photon torpedoes) in star trek: first contact, but in nemesis, which took place much after, it was firing photon torpedoes at the scimitar warbird. this always bugged me, guess i just take my weapon systems too seriously...lol. either way, ill be there on opening day to check out, and i hope they can finally revitalize the series. its still alive after 40 years, and that rocks! peace.........BLUE_THUNDER

Hiya cokecan,,!:bunny:
thanks so much for trying to mend my wounded heart. 😛
No really,, Cool idea! :jester:

but i remember attending a convention once in which it was said that books are not considered canon.. So *sniff sniff* i can't even count on the Romulan clone!! :cry1:

Oh well. It is the thought that counts, right? 😉 :sowrong:

Many blessings

okay, well this is an olllllllldddd thread... but anyways, i loved nemesis and thought it rocked and Rick Berman and the other guy are awesom with producing Voyager and DS9...but anyways, i had other thoughts as I read some of the stuff but they left me, what I really came to say was that i read that they probably aren't going to do a prequal...i read in a newer article that the dirrector or someone said it probably wouldn't end up about kirk and spocks early life or whatever, it might be a prequal but it won't be about that...but i guess we're going to have to wait until 08 to truely find out what it's about. Personally I think they should call me up and have me write the next movie...i think I could write a good one, alot of mehem and distruction and totally end the star trek movie series and bring everything together and yeah...better than nemesis did because they tried to end it with nem but i think i could do a better job with a new movie.
