It's time to start thinking of candidates for Coach of the Year. There have been a lot of surprises from a few teams this year and a few coaches have made serious impacts on thier teams.
If I were voting, I'd go with Marvin Lewis of the Cincinnati Bengals. It's easy to go with a coach with the best win record, but look at what Lewis has done with the NFL's most moribund team over the last 12 years. The Bengals are playoff contenders and could even win the division. They are the only team to have beaten league-leading Kansas City, and the players have pride in thier team for the first time in recent memory. Marvin Lewis has made an immediate impact in only his first year as head coach.
The coaches chosen for the poll are there for specific reasons, record not being the first or most important. For instance, Bill Bellichik (NE) and Andy Reid (PHIL) are there because of what they did with a failing, injury-plagued team, turning around a season that looked doomed early on. Parcells (DAL) and Lewis (CIN) are there for turning around horrible teams in only thier first year as head coach. Dick Vermeil (KC) and Tony Dungy (IND) have instilled a very good offense and defense, respectively, in teams that previously had thier strength on the other side of the ball. And John Fox (CAR) may be in his second season, but he had nothing to work with, almost like a rookie season.
So, who do you think should be Coach of the Year?
