People Doing the Job They Hate

I’m referring to the large numbers of individuals I’ve listened to complain ad nauseum since entering the work force in the early 70’s. And I’ve been guilty of singing the same song at various times as well. But eventually you should get to the point where you can’t even believe your own excuses.

You claim it’s a very small group, but there are still too many relying on corporations, unions & government for security without any contingency plan. The more options you create for yourself the less you need to depend on others.

It takes money to make money and even if I had a clue what I wanted to do in self employment I wouldn't have the cash to make it happen. Besides, not everyone wants to be self-employed (nor are they necessarily meant to be) and they shouldn't be criticized for it IMO.

I wasn’t alluding to self employment; staying relevant and marketable is the best hedge to any market fluctuation. If you spend twenty years bending sheet metal without doing anything to expand your horizon, you have no one to blame but yourself when that job ends up in china and you’re wondering what to do next.

Well I stand corrected; maybe because I'm still smarting over something someone else said to me about self employment and free market society crap. When we have to bail out banks and auto corporations, we're no longer a free market IMO.

I will agree with this post; it's the reason why I went back to school in 2003 & 2006. Prior to that, I had my Associates Degree for 16yrs. I got tired of working in the mortgage industry and if I really wanted to be taken seriously in other career areas, I needed my bachelors. Then after a couple of years at my so called "real job" I realized I needed more if I ever wanted to advance so hence the masters.

Now to find that job that'll reward me for all my hard work and education! At the rate I'm going, I'd rather be a street sweeper than unemployed! In other words, I ain't picky! I can find my dream job later; right now almost nightmare looks good.......

Depending on the job it could come down to a person have X number of years before retirement. Some people have jobs that they loved, but for one reason or another got moved to a job they hated. If someone had to do a job they hated for 3 years in order to get a kick ass pension, health insurance and all that for the remainder of there years, I would assume they would at least attempt to stay at the job.

One's happiness in their job is function of two things in my opinion....one's attitude and ones circumstance. I tell my young guys to be men that dictate their lives with the attitudes and caution them not to let their circumstance dictate their lives. It's easy to say and tough to do. Prayer is involved. So are positive affirmations. I left school my senior year because my dad was ill. I enlisted in the Air Force doing a job that I hated with great people that were...simply put on a different level than me. I didn't belong. I came from studying physics to coming home covered in grease. I hated it. But I changed my attitude and worked my ass off. Networked and made the right moves. A few years later i'm getting a (literally) a million dollar education to be trained as a pilot. The creme de la creme of my service. And I have an amazing sense of purpose. My circumstances didn't dictate how i'd live my life...my attitude did. I love my job....and my life. But even better than that....I love knowing that no matter what life throws at me I can get through it. I'm now working on taking that confidence in myself and extending it to those I lead.

Hmmm... so this got bumped. I read once again. I am impressed by the diversity of experiences shared in this thread. And to those who NEVER quit working it hard despite the odds, it's truly inspiring. Thank you for your replies, folks.

I have a love/hate relationship with my job. Mostly hate. Apart from being so physically draining, it's also emotional, on an almost daily basis I've actually just sat in my car and cried... But then I somehow when I manage to get through it and it can be rewarding. In a way I can't imagine doing anything else.

I have lots of bad days at work. On the days that are really bad and I feel like giving up, I remember why I entered the profession in the first place, and I remind myself that people believe in me and that they are counting on me. And I can't let them down. That's what motivates me to stay in a job I mostly hate.

I'd say there's also a large gap between loving and hating a job. No child dreams of managing spreadsheets and making Powerpoint presentations (if you did, you had a very sad childhood). But these jobs need to be done by someone, and it's certainly not misery to do them. Even if they aren't the stuff dreams are made of, at the very least you could surf the internet at work and pursue hobbies in your off time. There are far worse ways to live (in fact, just about every job before the twentieth century was worse).

Well some days ago this has been a casual conversation with a friend.

This is common. Most people stay permanently on jobs they hate and they can't seem to do anything about it, or there are factors. Why so?

You see, if people are doing what they really love the most, I would assume a great leap in this planet. No need for whips and bloodshed.

We know that this is not applicable to all. I assume opinions. Please discuss. Thanks.

I can speak from personal experience here. You may hate your job, but often times a person becomes so adapted to that style of job that they fear changing. They look at it like although they hate their job, they may regret leaving it if they take something else and wind up not liking that job. There is alsot he fear that you may leave a job you are at only to take another job and get laid off or fired from it.
