There is a concept in media consumption called 'Figmentation'
When we see people in the media, we create a mental image of what we think they are like. This is based on what we see, read, etc about the person. We also liberally bias the image with our own personal wants/desires for the person to possess. This construct that pops out of our thinking is a figment.
The figment is something that we manipulate to amuse ourselves. And over time they get sculpted into images that have little in common with the people they represent.
There is no way for them to be corrected, because the distance media imposes on the viewer and the viewed, is a significant wall in 'knowing' any truth about the person viewed. So the figmintation is pretty much embedded in the situation.
Real people we know, talk to, and interact with are harder to turn into figments. Because they are there in our faces, smashing them on a regular basis. You might want to imagine 'x' about your friend, but it's hard to do when they are disproving it in front of you. So the mental images we form of those closer to us are only figmants in small ways. And tend to be much closer to real projections.
A person who desires a fantasy for arousal, is going to chose which path based on what their specific personality demands in forming 'connectivity'. For some it's simply a need for a pretty body, and they are good to go. A figment will more then do the job there. Others feel a need to know the person, be able to connect on a real level for there to be any juice in the fantasy, so these folks will gravitate to the people they can interact with.
