I notice that this Forum is a place full of personal attacks. When there is a difference of opinion or a difference of
views, many comments are not very productive. Many of the comments are not even anything but something to disrupt
the forum.

I have observed this for over 10 years. Does anyone else agree with this?

"full of?"
"Many of?"

No, I actually don't agree with that at all.

I imagine he must be referring to the P&R.

I don't see it very often outside of it, though it does happen a bit.

Because everybody should just be friendly all the time!

....Oh and world peace too! :peace:

But seriously...
How can you call anything on the internet (this forum especially) "personal" attacks.
You don't know me.
I don't know you.
You know nothing about me.
So if you are taking something that is said to you by a complete stranger personally...then...uhm...I suggest you leave the internet.

While I can appreciate this view, the fact is that it is personal. The second you begin to comment towards a person, it becomes a personal comment. The notion that it isn't, is like saying when a newspaper comments on a person is not a personal comment. It is. I think part of the biggest problem is that people use the internet as an excuse to act like an ass, then use the internet as an excuse because they will likely be no reprocusions for their actions.

I'm an ass on the internet so I don't have to be an ass to people in real life.

Everyone has an outlet. Arguing on the internet happens to be mine. I just try to rein in the name-calling if I find myself doing it.

That makes no sense. Unless I am getting into an argument with a friend that I know in real life over the internet (Ex: Facebook) then it's not a personal attack. But the OP specifally stated this forum...and since most of us don't know each other outside of the internet world it cannot be considered personal.

If one person posts a thread or a blog talking about their life and the drama in it and blah blah blah and someone that doesn't know them from Fred or Sally makes a comment then how is it personal? It's an opinion, sure. But that person commenting can't possibly know the whole story, he/she is just going off what is said in that particular post. He/she knows nothing of that person other than what is in front of them--that's why half the time people say the "wrong" thing and the OP will get upset because it's not the answer they wanted.

It's like I'm calling you fat but I have no idea what you look like.
It's not personal. It's the internet.

It is personal only if you take it as such. This is cyberspace so IMHPO, I have learned over the years to not take ANY of this personally. Folks only know you through a screenname.....they don't know you personally nor do they really know your heart/intentions. Why would you waste your energy on a stranger??

The second you begin to comment towards a person, it becomes a personal comment.

I'm sorry, I'm just not in agreement with this statement. It depends on how much energy one would invest in the argument. If they want to go pages at a time over several days......then it's personal. If they blow it off and live and let live......then not so much.

There are some who definitely view the internet in this way; they have the cloak of anonymity in their favor so they say and do whatever the hell pleases them......until the consequence comes their way.

I feel that this forum is pretty well moderated. Granted, tensions to rise--more these days since the early days, but people forget the exponential growth over the past 12+ years. I'm sure there are still a few old-timers who will attest to the horrid moderation of the old, tickling newsgroups from ages ago.

If you think this place is bad, compare it to various YouTube comments for scope.

Well, its no fun to be referred to as an 'old timer' but I guess I better get used to it, LOL! But yes, the old days before TMF was like the wild west. No for the feint at heart.

My apologies. I meant it in the most flattering context possible. 😛 Perhaps I could have used the term long-time members?

No... He(C.A.B.) is an 'old-timer', this is not a "personal attack" - just bitch-slap hello from reality. A "personal attack" would be for me to call him "dad." Right, C.A.B.? 😉

Very funny... by the way... your mother called again, son... she says you're not returning her calls.

LoL! No apologies necessary... I like the phrase "Old-timer"... makes me want to adopt a Pepperridge Farm voice: "Remembah how fun it was to tie up yer sister in the baahn and tickle the Milanos out of her?... Pepperridge Farm, remembers."

What the fuck do you know about being an "Old-timer", you diapered dandy? Huh?? huh???

Oh.My.Goodness.

I want it in record that I have never ever been to Pepperridge Farm.

That makes no sense.

I've seen your posts. This doesn't shock me.

Unless I am getting into an argument with a friend that I know in real life over the internet (Ex: Facebook) then it's not a personal attack. But the OP specifally stated this forum...and since most of us don't know each other outside of the internet world it cannot be considered personal.

Why is it not a personal attack? YOu are making a claim upon the person's character. If you didn't know them personally, but wrote an insulting remark in a newspaper, say claiming they had sex with children, this would be considered slander.

If one person posts a thread or a blog talking about their life and the drama in it and blah blah blah and someone that doesn't know them from Fred or Sally makes a comment then how is it personal?
Read above.

It's an opinion, sure. But that person commenting can't possibly know the whole story, he/she is just going off what is said in that particular post. He/she knows nothing of that person other than what is in front of them--that's why half the time people say the "wrong" thing and the OP will get upset because it's not the answer they wanted.

So, knowing a poster doesn't know the whole story, does it make sense for the poster to continue to claim they are right, and the original poster is wrong about there personal views?

It's like I'm calling you fat but I have no idea what you look like.
It's not personal. It's the internet.

I disagree. It's a personal attack. If i slander your character, is it a personal attack.

Folks only know you through a screenname.....they don't know you personally nor do they really know your heart/intentions. Why would you waste your energy on a stranger??

Isn't that kind'a like saying that cyber bulling doesn't kill people? Don't get me wrong, a thick skin is good. Sadly, not everybody has as thick a skin.

I'm sorry, I'm just not in agreement with this statement. It depends on how much energy one would invest in the argument. If they want to go pages at a time over several days......then it's personal. If they blow it off and live and let live......then not so much.
Why does it have to be pages? There is no litmus test for personal, to my knowledge.

There are some who definitely view the internet in this way; they have the cloak of anonymity in their favor so they say and do whatever the hell pleases them......until the consequence comes their way.

Sadly for some, the consequences never come their way.

Why is it not a personal attack? YOu are making a claim upon the person's character. If you didn't know them personally, but wrote an insulting remark in a newspaper, say claiming they had sex with children, this would be considered slander.

Slander. Do you know what the word slander means? Let me help you out:
The action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation.

Besides who uses the newspaper as an example for making a point about personal attacks on internet forums?

So, knowing a poster doesn't know the whole story, does it make sense for the poster to continue to claim they are right, and the original poster is wrong about there personal views?

No. But you completely missed my point there.
My point is BECAUSE the poster doesn't know the OP's whole story the OP shouldn't take it as a personal attack.
What the poster does when he/she finds out the OP doesn't agree with them is a completely different topic.

I disagree. It's a personal attack. If i slander your character, is it a personal attack.
