LeeAllure recently brought to our attention the PETA campaign to call fish "seakittens" so we wouldnt want to hurt them...

PETA just grinds my gears so I sent them an email telling them just how foolish I thought they were as an organization in general..

I never expected a response, but got one.....Here it is....

Thank you for contacting PETA about our lighthearted campaign to get people to think of fish as “sea kittens.” The goal of this campaign is to help people of all ages recognize that fish are living beings capable of feeling pain and distress—just as kittens are—and that it is no more acceptable to inflict pain and suffering on fish than it is to hurt a kitten or any other animal.

PETA’s purpose is to stop animal suffering, and we use all available opportunities to reach millions of people with powerful messages. We have found that people pay more attention to our more outlandish actions, and we consider the public’s attention to be extremely important. Part of our job is to grab people’s attention and initiate discussion, debate, questioning of the status quo, and, of course, action. The situation is critical for billions of animals, and our goal is to make the public think about the issues.

We cannot dismiss the fact that it’s wrong to hurt fish simply because we perceive them to be less intelligent than humans. Superior intelligence does not entitle humans to abuse other humans, so why should it entitle humans to abuse beings other than humans?

No one would consider doing to other animals what some so casually do to fish—trick them into impaling themselves in the mouth and pull them into an environment where they can’t breathe. But whether they are bass or basset hounds, catfish or cats, all animals treasure their lives and feel pain.

According to Dr. Donald Broom, animal welfare advisor to the British government, “The scientific literature is quite clear. Anatomically, physiologically and biologically, the pain system in fish is virtually the same as in birds and mammals. In animal welfare terms you have to put fishing into the same category as hunting.” Adds Dr. Austin Williams, a U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service zoologist, fish “are [sensitive] organisms, so of course they feel pain.” To learn more about these animals’ intelligence and capacity for suffering, please visit http://www.FishingHurts.com/feat-hiddenfish.asp and http://www.FishingHurts.com/FishFeelPain.asp.

We also want people to know that eating fish flesh can be hazardous to their health. Fish can accumulate extremely high levels of chemical residues—as much as 9 million times higher than the levels of the water in which they live. Fish flesh may store contaminants such as PCBs, which are strongly suspected of causing cancer, nervous system disorders, and fetal damage; dioxins, also linked to cancer; radioactive substances like strontium 90; and toxic metals like cadmium, mercury, lead, chromium, and arsenic, which can cause health problems ranging from kidney damage and impaired mental development to cancer. For more information about the health problems associated with fish consumption, please see http://www.FishingHurts.com/HealthConcerns.asp.

Unfortunately, getting the message to the public is not always easy and straightforward. Unlike our opposition, which is mostly composed of wealthy industries and corporations, PETA must rely on getting free “advertising” through media coverage. We often use stunts and controversial ad campaigns to get the word out about animal abuse, because sadly, the media usually do not consider the facts alone “interesting” enough to cover. Colorful and controversial gimmicks, on the other hand, consistently grab headlines, bringing the animal rights message to audiences around the country and, often, the world. Our efforts and campaigns have been very successful in educating the public about the abuses that animals endure every day, and your message is proof that people are reading and talking about PETA and animal rights. If this column by an outdoors writer is any indication, our Sea Kitten campaign has been successful: http://www.dispatch.com/live/conten...-12-08_C13_7EBIQ21.html?type=rss&cat=&sid=101. Thanks again for writing and for sharing your thoughts with us.

Sincerely,

And here is my response back...

Dear Jeff,

Outlandish means of grabbing people's attention will often times backfire just as the tossing of paint and destruction of private property by members of your organization have done. Y

our rep is poor among many and this "lighthearted" campaign as you put it, borders on the ridiculaous.

People are carnivores. We were made to eat the lower lifeforms. Some pain is involved. Those of us who are not vegetarians are tired of hearing the propaganda that your organization spews forth. Those of us with family members who are afflicted with disease do not care how many animals it takes to find a cure.

Sorry if it sounds cold, but human life must be put first, although if you wish to give up yours by undergoing such tests yourself so that an animal can live, feel free.

Sincerely

Ray

Boy I love playin with this kind of organization.....

That reply to your email just serves to illustrate how far these people are out of touch with reality.

"Made to eat meat"? I'm not absolutely sure that that's true. Although in all honesty I haven't verified it, I've heard that humans are the only species among the great apes which eat meat (in nature, that is, assuming it's not fed to them by humans, of course). I've also read that the shape of human teeth make them better-designed for a vegetarian diet. Again, I can't verify any of this with certainty at the moment. But I wonder by what evidence or criteria you've determined, if you have, that humans are "made to eat meat"?

I don't think we are carnivores, but I do think we were designed to have a mixed diet. I mean, why else do we have molars AND incisors?

We are by nature omnivores...:bubble:

I only made that response to fuck with them... and piss them off...I expect they will respond in kind explaining to me where I am mistaken....

Glam got the joke...I lol'd whle writing it..

Many of my friends do not eat meat at all.....some eat no red meat...they do it for their own health and I have no problem with it...they do not preach to me nor I to them...we accept each other the way we are...

Organizations like PETA do not accept people for what we are. They preach and attempt to do the guilt trip thing and have created their own jobs paid for by the money they soak in from those that think they are doing good...

Nice racket.....:banghead:

Well, there's little doubt that many humans are omnivores, of course, and that many people like to eat meat, but I guess I'm just less than fully convinced that we were "made" to eat meat. It's kind of late at night and I really wouldn't know where to get further information on it at the moment, nor can I specifically recall where I read what I referred to above, since it's been quite awhile (it wasn't anything from PETA, I'm only pretty sure of that).

But as at least modern humans don't use their teeth for biting or killing live prey, as say a snake or a lion might, I'm not sure by what criteria one would necessarily assume that was for eating meat, rather than, say, taking a bite out of an apple. The truth is, I'm just not sure. But I suppose one could first investigate whether or not the other great ages also have molars and incisors and whether they eat meat or not, as I said that I've read that none do. And if they do have teeth similar to ours and don't "naturally" eat met, then I suppose we might ask why they have such teeth (again, if they do).

Otherwise, I've gathered that in many places in the world humans don't tend to eat nearly as much meat as many Americans do, and from everything I've read on the subject, generally speaking meat isn't in any way necessary to human nutrition, assuming of course that adequate amounts and variety of other foods are available for consumption. So I'm just not fully convinced that we were "made to eat meat". (And I realize that that's not an exact quote, but it seemed to be the implication.)

You should ask them, how long before they start the save the lettuce campaigns.

That's an old joke (or variations thereof) that lots of people seem to aim at vegetarians, including my uncle, as I recall, until he later became one. A vegetarian that is, not a head of lettuce.

They're coming for you now, Ray. PETA has labelled you "Seakitten Enemy #1" and they are coming to paint your house pink in the middle of the night.

But......But.......But.....

What about the Sea Kittens?

WHAT OF THE POOR SEA KITTENS??????:yowzer::hysteriatrain::cry1::cry1:

Drew

Cabalist you make some good points and I would like to continue this discussion on a serious note.....

Glam....you Rock!....Love you more each day...:redheart:

Slacker....What makes you think the appartment building isnt pink already?...

Annie...keep jumping in....this can get interesting...

Drew....I am sorry, but there are no sea kittens....there ARE however sea monkeys and I will get you some for next time we meet...

(now where is that old comic book.....I know they are advertised right next to the X-Ray specs...)

Slacker....What makes you think the appartment building isnt pink already?...

They have other tactics too. Like smearing monkey turds on your car, prank calling you at work and signing you up for magazine subscriptions you didn't order. They are EVIL and will stop at nothing to make you pay for harming the poor seakittens.

As much of an environmentalist as I am....and while I do believe in animal rights....I still have to say:

I really hope this happens one day:

I'd piss my pants from laughing so much!

That's just what I was thinking, dip PETA members in blood and toss them into shark-infested waters. 😛

Wow. While I'm not necessarily supporting PETA's position, I do find it pretty appalling and disappointing what some people find funny. Kindness and respect go a long way in this world (and with me) and I sure as hell don't differentiate between species when I offer them. What goes around comes around folks.

Here is my question for PETA.

Why is it okay for an alligator to stalk, follow, trap and then eat a bird, after using its teeth to grasp it, not let go, shake it like crazy then eat it sometimes still alive. Why is PETA not protesting the jungles, swamps, and the plains of Africa. Why isn't PETA sending protest letters to Killer Whales, Lions or Tigers.

Just something I wonder.

Rob

Ask them about the living trees killed for their pamphlets and ask them about their VP taking insulin due to diabetes(which was tested on apes i believe)

Because they are idiots and think since humans are "smart" that we should deny human instinct and not be predators

a lion wouldnt hesitate to eat me if hungry in the wild, and i wouldnt hesitate eat an animal if i was hungry in the wild

I think PETA, like almost all activist organizations, has become a mockery of itself. Being a pet owner, I certainly have a problem with animal cruelty and I think that neglected and abused animals should be protected. But, when an activist organization like PETA tries to take it to the extreme (Like that we should not even eat meat). There comes about point when you become so focused on personal advancement or the advancement of your cause that you fight meaningless battles or ones that never should have been fought in the first place.

Truthfully, I don't know much about PETA. I subscribed to an email newsletter or some such thing once to attempt to learn more, but never really received much from them. But, regardless, I agree with your assessment about what some people seem to find funny.

Since you seem to be an intelligent person, I'm somewhat surprised that you couldn't figure this out. Killer whales, lions, and tigers can't read.
