Ok, this thread is currently being inspired by a chatroom conversation. We all know a little something about eachothers philias, but what about phobias, cuz personally, I do not do well around spiders!!! F that.

Sorry everyone...

You can all blame me for that. XD But yeah, seconded on the spiders. They just freak me the hell out. Also, roaches somewhat, mainly due to traumatic childhood experiences (I had those with spiders too >_< ).

Yeah, spiders are little minions of Satan. That's why the government won't tell us about the aliens, ya know... because they're giant spiders, and they know how we'll all react when we find out. :blaugh: I wouldn't call it a phobia, just a healthy, active hatred.

heights. i can be on top of a building or go on a roller coaster with no problem, but rock-climbing or ladders...*shudder*

i'm almost hydrophobic as well. nearly drowned when i was younger, so i tend to be real gentle when i go into lakes or rivers, even more so than most.

i'm also afraid of complete solitude. i literally went nuts a few times when i couldn't have any contact with anyone.

I don't know if I have a phobia, per se. I certainly feel uneasy picking up large-ish spiders, and I get a massive adrenaline rush whenever I'm high up a mountain/in a cable car/on the roof of a tall building. But I don't actively dislike/fear those things...

Hydrophobia, without question. I avoid pools and any kind of deep water like the plague.

Also, (and yes I looked up the name of it), I have a distinct fear of physically dying alone. Also known as Monothanatophobia.

That's another big one of mine.

S'funny, I never had an issue with it when I was younger. It just developed.

And I torture myself with it. Forcing myself to look off the edge if I am up somewhere high.

I know. I'm screwy. :ermm:

I'm leaving to go on a trip with some friends to California later today. I've flown several times before and it's never bothered me. But now I can't help festering over my own mortality. I keep hearing the voice of a newscaster in my head saying, Continental Airlines flight blah blah whatever went down today over blah blah. Flying may be the safest way to travel, but if the plane goes down its end game. Unless of course I end up on an enchanted time-traveling island with 48 other strangers.

Yeah, when I went to NEST it was my first time flying ever.

I white knuckled it the whole time.

I actually had a panic attack flying into Detroit for my layover back to Rochester.

That was fun.

Another heights thing.

I am afraid of: all insects, spiders, snakes, slimy things, getting my teeth knocked out, heights (except flying), the dark, driving over bridges or train tracks, worms, bodies of water where I can't see the bottom, strangers, birds flying over my head, speaking in front of large crowds, taking showers (afraid of someone sticking their head inside while I'm in there - this does not stop me from taking showers, though 🙂 ) and Lee when I've done something wrong.

I know I must sound like a paranoid 'fraidy cat, but I'm really not! I'm just honest 🙂

I went to Tucson's Spring Fling thing with my lady friend a couple of months ago. We got on the ferris wheel, which was bad enough, but then she decided to rock our 'cage' back and forth. I'm not a violent person but I was ready to introduce her lips to my knuckles, that's how deathly afraid of heights I am. I get sweaty palms watching Wile E. Coyote fall to his 'death' in those Road Runner cartoons:

Huh, didn't know if there was a word for it or not. But yeah, I kinda have that too maybe. I don't mean dying in a place all by myself, but dying with no one who cares about me. So I dunno. *shrugs*

DAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. That's alot. Sorry, but I lol'd at birds and taking showers.

Put me down for a membership in the Arachnophobics Club.

Whilst I don't have a problem with the teeny tiny spiders you can get around the house, anything larger than that creeps me out.

The genesis of this phobia was an incident that happened when I was about four years old. It was early evening and I was outside playing on my swing. The swing itself was a trapezoidal frame (if memory serves) with four bars leading down to a wooden seat. Ergo, the setup lent itself to having large spaces for little eight legged bastards to weave their webs.

So, I'm happily swinging away and my Mom shouts something to me. I turn and look to my right. Maybe one foot away is a HUGE spider web and the occupant is smack bang in the middle of it. I think it may have been some form of orb weaver, judging by it's long legs, but at any rate the bastard was bigger than my hand (at the time).

Needless to say, I shat bricks. :yowzer:

Another milder, perhaps slightly irrational phobia I have is the fear of falling. Not in the context of falling off a high building, but more like...say, hiking up and down terrain that has an incline, or where one needs to step up/down rocks on the way. The distances involved are a matter of inches, but I still have the feeling I'm gonna slip, fall and break something. I have no idea where this comes from. :illogical 😕

Arachnophobia seems to be a common affliction by humans in general which has been confirmed by the number of posts here that mention spiders.

Coincidentally though, the phobia listed just prior to arachnophobia in the official phobia list; namely arachibutyrophobia, describes a fear for one of the most terrifying phenomenons a person could ever experience.
I’m surprised more people haven’t mentioned it already. :scared:

I'm mostly ok with spiders, as long as they aren't huge and they aren't making a beeline for my bedroom, yuck! That does creep me out. I had a huge spider in my lounge a few months back now that did panic me as it was moving so fast I couldn't keep track on where it was going, I didn't like that. I could feel all my hairs stand up as I started to breathe faster as my eyes were darting about this way and that and dancing around on tip-toes so I could move out of the way quicker and (hopefully) not tread on it :scared:

I had to take charge and used my umbrella and sort of nudged it out of the door.

I'm also not good with heights, I love the rollercoaster rides but I get shitless when they get high, but I have to go on them for the thrill 😛

Not afraid of spiders (in fact they are one of my favorite animals)..but if a spider *web* gets ON me?? Watch me do the freak-floppy dance.

Am afraid of heights (but not flying oddly enough). I mean, I don't even like to be put on someone's shoulders, lol.

Am afraid of bodies of murky water. If I can't see the bottom, I am not going in past my ankles.

Am afraid of cockroaches. Not the little ones. The huge ones that can fly.

And Abandonment.

Used to be terrified of the dark (actually, I was afraid of the monsters under the bed that the dark was hiding from me, lol).

I fear bugs in my house. I get manic ocd to a degree if i see a spider or something in my room, and it needs to die. I was worse when i was a kid, i couldnt sleep if i knew a moth was flying in the room, or a spider, or at my old house, centipedes

For a year in college i was ocd on locking the door, i would have to make sure i locked the door and then make sure when i tried to lock it i didnt accidentally unlock it

other phobias....i dunno, i fear girls? Prob why i am single

I also dont necessarily fear fog, but i respect fog for what may be in it

Hell Yeah, Televisions best drama!!!

I'm going to exclude most of my stupid phobias aside from toasters.. because toasters are an evil that should be put out there.

Toasters truly are evil. You put your bread in there and if you're an inquisitive sort, you'll want to watch how it toasts. You watch it turn to a golden brown, a little fear and anxiety creeps into you. You know at any moment now that bread is going to pop up at your face, but when. The bread turns a darker golden brown and you think about forcing the toast to pop up so that it doesn't burn or startle you but you leave it alone, afraid that you're going to get that annoying soft spot in the bottom from it coming up too soon. So you wait in the silence of your kitchen, hearing the faint clicking of the toaster elements... the SNAP, up comes the toast just when you start to think your toaster is broken. This is a cycle that never ceases to scare the living hell out of me... therefore toasters must be evil..

The End

Personally, I love spiders. I actaully let them live in my home to kill off pests like ants and roaches that manage to survive the little hotels about the corners of the house. Roaches don't bother me either, simply because I know it can't actaully hurt me, and normally just get stepped on or swatted as soon as it's seen.

Though, I do have a phobia for bees/wasps. No idea why, didn't have a traumatizing experence, and I'm not allergic to them. I've been stung plenty of times as well. But as soon as one gets into my line of sight, I walk a VERY large turn around it, or I freeze and walk backwards away from it.

This also leads into something else. Many insects can fly, and because I can't tell what a bug is at first when it flies around me, I flinch horribly.

You don't know how annoying that is... Is just walking down the sidewalk, minding my own business when... SOMETHING FLIES OUT! HOLY SHIT! GET IT OF.... oh.. it's a ladybug... *sigh* F'ing ladybugs... HOLY SHIT! GET IT O.... f'ing love bugs...

I used to have arachniphobia, but it's not as bad now.

My biggest phobia is ofidiophobia, fear of snakes.

<3 Same way here. Well except for the giant cockroaches. They freak me right the fuck out.

LOL at ladybugs. Love them too.
