As some of you may know, I play Warhammer; it's a table-top strategy battle game which uses minitature models (both plastic and metal) as your playing pieces, each with their own set of values, stats, and abilities. You assemble, modify, convert, and ultimately paint these models yourself.
It is a very popular international game and hobby.

The game is also a hobby in and of itself; so not only gamers, but hobbyists, collect the different models in the game.
There is currently a fantasy version, a furturistic version, a Lord of the Rings version, and several others (those these are the most popular and well known).
Creating an army to play with is quite an undertaking, and theres aloting of plastic and sometimes metal involved. This particular hobby, much like your basic modeling hobby, requires patience, the ability to paint the pieces, and lots of time (depending on army size).
Many players get into collecting more than one army so they can switch when they face new opponents at the gaming shops or whereever there is a club that plays.
I find this this hobby rather rewarding, because when you're finished with your models they don't just sit there, you actually use them and can take pride in both good worksmanship, painting, and battle tactics. And because the armies are customizable, your army list can change however you'd like so it's not always the same thing.
The biggest drawback to this hobby, however, is the price tag. Boxsets are rather expensive and the company itself recently had their annual price adjustment. While this usually doesn't stop serious gamers from collecting, it does ward off newcomers, thus harming the already limited number of people you'll find in any given area to play with/against.
