Haven't lost interest? cool! Hey, there's hope for you yet? (just razzing ya)
my groups has a website "VSM.ca" (none of my work is there)
To view some of my work visit "decals by mitch" website, he produced the graphics for my CASCAR models.

Since the model looks great, I was curious if you constuct dioramas as well?
Perhaps, a base covered in snow, and a treeline at one side of the base, the model is viewed through the treeline as if moving on the Eastern Front?
I have no idea for snow, I tried baking flour and eventually it yellowed slightly spoiling the appearance.
To make 1/48th scale trees, roots from shrubs dipped in tealeaves works well.
Especially if you construct a 1/48th scale Hetzer Tank Destroyer, hide it in the treeline. My 1/35th Hetzer is displayed this way and looks intriqueing.

No dioramas for me I model in the bunk area of a big rig No room really for a dio

As some of you may know, I play Warhammer; it's a table-top strategy battle game which uses minitature models (both plastic and metal) as your playing pieces, each with their own set of values, stats, and abilities. You assemble, modify, convert, and ultimately paint these models yourself.

It is a very popular international game and hobby.

Here is the link to the official Games Workshop website:

http://us.games-workshop.com/

The game is also a hobby in and of itself; so not only gamers, but hobbyists, collect the different models in the game.

There is currently a fantasy version, a furturistic version, a Lord of the Rings version, and several others (those these are the most popular and well known).

Creating an army to play with is quite an undertaking, and theres aloting of plastic and sometimes metal involved. This particular hobby, much like your basic modeling hobby, requires patience, the ability to paint the pieces, and lots of time (depending on army size).

Many players get into collecting more than one army so they can switch when they face new opponents at the gaming shops or whereever there is a club that plays.

I find this this hobby rather rewarding, because when you're finished with your models they don't just sit there, you actually use them and can take pride in both good worksmanship, painting, and battle tactics. And because the armies are customizable, your army list can change however you'd like so it's not always the same thing.

The biggest drawback to this hobby, however, is the price tag. Boxsets are rather expensive and the company itself recently had their annual price adjustment. While this usually doesn't stop serious gamers from collecting, it does ward off newcomers, thus harming the already limited number of people you'll find in any given area to play with/against.

I build a few models here and there. It's a pretty relaxing hobby. Mostly I just build mechas and spaceships. n_n

Hey Vlad,
I am familar with Warhammer, a youth down the road from me is into Warhammer, he does a fantastic job painting them, he puts as much detail as he can on each piece!
Thay really are a work of art when completed!! And so freaking small to paint all that detail, very impressive!!

Fantastic, another model builder!! It is a relaxing hobby, although I am not overly familar with mechas, I take it those are robots?
Spaceships are virtually endless with movie and TV series versions.
Do you get your space ships to light up?
With fibre optics, I saw a DS9 space station, it lit up - really impressive.

That's awesome to hear. Has he ever considered taking pictures of them?

When next time you see him, ask him what armies he collects and if he can take pictures. I would like to these these masterpieces myself. 🙂

Regrettably I haven't seen him around, I believe he has "come of age" and moved out of his parents home.
However when he was about 16, he entered one of our model contests, and walked away "Best Junior" trophy for his efforts on his first time at a model contest! (green eyed - moi?) LOL!

Yeah, the youngsters are really getting more impressive these days. I've seen 12 year olds paint things even the professionals can't match in quality; it's pretty amazing.

Being an artist definitely helps in my painting my minis, but it sure is easy to be put to shame by someone with superior skills. There are alot of people dedicated to this stuff far more than me or the average gamer. Though, they tend to not get out much, if you know what I mean.

True the youngsters sure know their stuff, I mentioned to FL Atlanta, that when I lived in Toronto, Ont. two twelve year olds entered a bridge section with German Panzer column advancing into a model contest they were awarded second place Junior Catagory, and walked away with Best in Show.

Yes, by mechas I mean robots. Mostly Gundams and stuff like that. I've not done any lighting in my spaceships yet, though. Most of the ones I have would require a lot of modification to light up the windows. The DS9 kit you refer to I think comes ready for fibre optics. What I'd really like to take, though, would be lighting the Polar Lights original Enterprise, just to see if I could get the lights in the engines right.

That's really amazing. I've seen some pretty awesome things like that too.

Like once I saw this huge display of a castle being under seige by an invading force and there was literally thousands of miniatures on this display, and everything was to scale.

I also remember hearing about one for Lord of the Rings, where the battle from the first movie at the beginning against Sauron's horde was completely displayed and there was a miniature for every single trooper that was said to be in that battle. All the heros and villians were there too, as was Sauron's tower, the volcanoes, etc. That had to be 10s of thoudands of miniatures, and all of them were said to be fully painted, detailed, and the detailed scenery, etc!

I would have really wanted to see that! Damn, thats almost unfathomable!

Ah, Gundams - very familar with those, I have a Bandai 1/100th scale "Epyon" - there is a chap in my club, the "Gundam" series is all he models, and they are fascinating to look at, some of them he decided to add battle damage.

"Lord of the Rings" battle??? I can imagine the detail!!!! Now that is frieghtening!! That would definately be an attention grabber at any model show!!!

The last one I built was a 1/100 Tallgeese III. I found the kit in the dealer room at A-Kon the last morning of the convention. I grabbed it right then. It's probably my favorite gundam, and I didn't even know they made a kit of it.

Glad to see that there are a bunch modellers from the group. I've been building models for over 40 years. I started out with airplanes but quickly switched to AFV's, but occasionally still build a plane or two. Most of the tanks I build are in the 1/35th scale. A few months ago, I completed a few 1/48th scale kits that I bought on e-bay, a Ferdinand Assault Gun (Elefant) and a Jagdpanther both by Bandai, and great little kits too. A few months ago I built a Heltzer from the new line of 1/48th scale by Tamiya. I am currently working on a Dragons' M26A1 Pershing from the Korean War Series. If you guys are looking for a really good modelling site, go to Track-link, you'll pretty much find anything you want, from advice on building kits, to swapping parts and kits. Btw, for you Long Islanders, if you are looking for a place to buy kits, I suggest Bay Shore Hobbies, they are reasonably priced and you'll find most of your modellings need there.

Hi Sammi, I figured they covered all the Gundams, the trick is just finding them!!
I've seen models of defence ball units - never wished to pick one up though....

I'd imagine there would have to be a waiting line for something like that, to keep people from crowding around it.

Does anyone know where I can find large aircraft carrier models online?

If I was ever going to make another ship, I would want it to be an aircraft carrier.

Also, does anyone know if it's where possible to find a Super Star Destroyer (sometimes refered to as the Executor) model (Star Wars)? I remember a LONG time ago seeing a boxset for this thing at a hobby store, but it really didn't interest me enough at the time to look into it. It was the only one there too...

I've also seen online pictures of molds for the Eclipse class destroyers (which are even more impressive than the super class). I'm not sure however if it was made my an amateur, or a professional that doesn't produce them.

Here's the best I could find, Vlad. http://users.hunterlink.net.au/~ddwwp/resin.htm They've got resin models of both the classic SSD and Eclipse-class. The SSD comes as 1 piece, and the Eclipse comes as 4. Aaaand, they're pretty expensive.

I knew I've seen that website before!

Thanks for finding it for me. 🙂

Yeah, that is pretty expensive. But, considering they are the two most largest legendary capital ships in the entire Star Wars universe (excluding the Death Star which doesn't count as a capital ship), the price is more or less justified.

Although, looking at how small they are, maybe not. The SSD only ammounts to 12 inches (a foot), and the Eclipse only measures at 8.6 inches. That's pretty small. I was hoping for something huge, like more than 3 feet. I'd be willing to pay even more if it was that large, but a single foot is pretty puny for such a grand ship.
