I have come to the point of wanting to update my video gaming capabilities, am totally caving, and will be purchasing a PS3 in the coming days. As a life-long Nintendo customer, I'm not entirely sure what's out there in terms of software for the PS3 and would like some advice. I'm going to be getting Street Fighter 4 and Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as a longtime fan of both series. If the deal I have worked out holds, I'll also be getting Infamous 2 as part of the deal.

What else should I get, games wise?

The two Batman Arkham games have piqued my interest and I'm totally grabbing Lollipop Chainsaw when it comes out next year. I'm sure somebody will cram Oblivion and Fallout 3 down my throat at some point (not that I mind. XOXO). Beyond that, I'm at a loss.

Games I typically enjoy are the platformers (Mario games) and RPG's with a solid, original battle system (Tales of Symphonia, the Grandia series) as well as games that are original and just plain well-made (Shadow of the Colossus, Katamari Damacy). I've been told that something called Uncharted is a must. Could anyone tell me about it?

Games I typically don't enjoy are racing games and first-person shooters, though I have gotten into a few FPS' in the past.

Help me out here TMF. What should I be on the lookout for?

Definitely get Batman: Arkham Asylum. It is absolutely fantastic. Preorder Arkham City while you're at it. Devil May Cry 4 was a lot of fun, and should be very cheap by now. LittleBigPlanet is tons of fun. I really enjoyed Prototype, though there are some who didn't think much of it. I'm a HUGE fan of the Dead Space series; if you like survival horror, they are must own games.

What is Prototype? You're not the first to suggest that one.

I've heard LittleBigPlanet is like a level editor for Super Mario World/2D platformers. How accurate is this?

The title that keeps coming up is Uncharted. What is that exactly?

SS

I'll agree on the Batman games. Arkham Asylum was great, and Arkham City looks to be better.

Also, if you haven't played the Assassin's Creed series, that's a good time, too.

I've heard something called Deus Ex is supposed to be amazing. Might be worth a look as well.

Welcome to the side of the big black box o' awesome that is the PS3.

Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition is the premier, and presumably final, iteration of SF4 and is a solid fighter. I'd hold off on MVC3 because it has an updated version coming out in November with extra characters and arenas. Personally? I've found the newest Mortal Kombat to be a much more engaging and lasting purchase than both SF4 and MVC3, partly due to it having a solid single player component in addition to a strong fighting engine.

Pick up the original Bioshock if you can find it, it's one of the best current generation games, despite being a few years old. Infamous 1 and 2 are great fun too, and I'm not one to like sandbox style games, but played and beat both. Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games I've ever played, but its more of a third person shooter than RPG, despite having solid RPG elements, so it may not be your cup of tea. Deus Ex: Human Revolution has taken up a lot of my time since it came out, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

Finally, if you don't pick up Arkham Asylum and then Arkham City, God Himself shalt smite 1000 kitties and club 40 baby seals. Seriously... it's in the Bible.

Prototype is a sandbox action game, and without spoiling anything, it's basically an unmitigated, morally compromised power fantasy, and it couldn't possibly be more badass.

That is a really solid description of the LittleBigPlanet engine, though it brings it's own style, and it's tons of fun.

I haven't played Uncharted, but from my understanding, it's a pretty awesome action/adventure game. I've been meaning to check it out myself.

You should definitely get the fantastic Star Wars 'The Force Unleashed' games. Very cool indeed. Also I recommend GTA4, the newest Madden 12(if you are into football games).

Definitely get the first Force Unleashed game, but don't waste your money on the second. It was rushed to release, and absolutely abysmal.

Assassin's Creed. Might want to start with the first one so you don't get confused with the story and you get a handle on the basic controls. I can send you the second one if you like the first and you can borrow it. 🙂

All AC games I've played on PS3 have been bloody fantasticorgasmical. I've been playing the multiplayer of the third (technically not however, it's labeled Brotherhood), for almost a year everyday now. It's not anything like the FPS COD games. It requires brains and stealth and epic cunning.

I think you might really enjoy it given its close to a comic-like storyline and characters.

Most folks have already ticked off what I'd suggest.. so I'll just leave God of War here.

Puzzle game, plot set in Greek Mythology, character of extreme epic power and a humorous button prompted sex scene.

Can't go wrong.

Totally forgot about God of War 3 and Portal 2.

...Fail on my part, shame on YOU for not picking them up though.

I'm not gonna lie; I played through the fist God of War game on PS2 and was pretty indifferent towards it. 😛

thanx.

Holy balls. I can't believe I forgot GOW.

A game i didnt think i would like but really enjoyed was infamous.

I take it back. Not every Ac game I've played is awesome. I'm playing the multiplayer beta of Revelations right now and it's like playing with a bucket of vomit IMO.

Also, Portal games = OMG. So, so, SO much win.

I am not an owner of a PS3 myself but definitely agree with the previous suggestions. Though I myself had issues with Street Fighter 4's game engine on the 360 (crisp graphics for sure, but the movements and action set-ups felt oddly clunky to me...but 360 is far inferior to PS3 in terms of system engine so) but I definitely recommend M vs. C 3!

As I told your lovely lady, though I am not sure if you are also a Tales of Symphonia fan and I don't even know if it released through North America (it did in Japan and was insanely successful), but one game I would recommend for you if you have some time (not Final Fantasy XIII time fortunately) to spare is Tales of Vesperia for PS3 - I had it for my 360 and I still consider one of the absolute best games I've ever played in my life to this very day. I still regret trading it in - definitely a "you don't know what you have until it's gone" scenarios - but it has amazing graphics, visuals, soundtrack and sound effects, the gameplay is responsive and solid, the controls are easy to learn and fun to master as there are many combinations of set-ups you can do (if you know "Tales" games, I think you'll understand) but what it does have is a very decent storyline, complete with great voice acting.

Good luck with your search my friend. 😀

First wave purchased: Super Street Fighter 4, Fallout 3 and Shadows of the Damned. 😀

Enjoy bud. SSF4 is great. I used to main Cody and Guile when I still played. Good luck in arcade mode, cuz Seth is the world's biggest prick.
