More Recognition Of The Bass Playing Genius Of James Jamerson

I can't stop spreading the word about Motown Records studio bass player James Jamerson. In the first video, you'll hear how James' bass interplays with the vocal parts of The Temptations, particularly the voices of lead singers Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin:

Jameson

Featherfingers, Again a wonderful tribute to Jameson a man very few people know nothing about. "Your My Everything" is one of the best Temptation songs ever I love how Ruffin comes in on the bridge and sets up the last verse for Kendriks to wail in a falsetto voice. This is the same trick used later in the 60s with The Jackson 5 between Michael and Jermaine Jackson.

The reason Jameson was so good is that he came from a Jazz backround and played upright bass. The action on his fender jazz bass was very high and he hardly ever changed his strings. For some reason this all worked in the 60s but did not work very well when Motown moved to California and started using 8 and 16 and 24 track studios. Also lots of bassist started using roundwound strings for a cleaner crisper sound. But Jameson was a first and his sense of funk and advanced harmony was way ahead of most electric bassist and rock guitar players at the time. Wonderful post and I see your mixing musical genres more in your last post too excellent!!

Thanks, Brian. I recommend the book "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" for anyone interested in learning more about Jamerson's life and bass playing technique. The book comes with two CDs that feature popular bass players such as Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, Chuck Rainey, etc. playing basslines that Jamerson had played at Motown. The sheet music for each of those songs are part of the book, too. Very comprehensive.

I'm glad you're liking my genre mixing. That was the nice thing about radio in the '60s and '70s. A Stevie Wonder song would be followed by an Elton John song, which would be followed by a Charlie Rich song, etc. etc. You don't really get that on today's radio, unless you have XM Radio and you tune in to channel 7, "The '70s."

Everyone is posting some great music. I admit I'm not too well versed with the more current music but then that's what makes this thread so nice. We can learn about all kinds of music thanks to the different contributions that are made.

Speaking of contributions:

Here are some songs that I love despite the fact I can't understand what the singers are saying (Favorite Songs In A Foreign Language):

An oversight on my part, thanks for correcting my error.😉

Great choices Bugman!!

Man you beat me to it!! I to wanted to post the Band. And I love those songs "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down". Unlike bands like the Eagles that were slick and superficial, though I liked their music, The Band really got into the true essence of American music with a fine mixture of country, rock and roll and blues. Thanks for the excellent choice!!
