Phil Spector
I wanted to talk about the Legendary record producer Phil Spector. For those of you who may not know in the early to mid 60's there was no other producer with more hit records under his belt. He was sort of like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis today but only much bigger.
Phil created what became know as "The Wall Of Sound". In other words the record was really an orgasmatic explosion of sound on those tiny little turntables people had in those days. For example the bass drums when off like cannons exploding or cascading sounds of rythym guitars or string sections swirling all over the place. Some of his most famous records were "Hes A Rebel" by the Crystals, "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes "River Deep Mountain High" by Tina Turner. But his most endearing masterpiece was "You've lost That lovin Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers. The brothers were two young white guys Bill Medley and Bobbie Hatfield (who just passed) that really sounded african american unlike groups like the Stones who tended to sound like white guys imitating black people.
Spector went out of favor in the late 60s because of the proliferation of self contained bands that wrote and produced their own music and also because Spector himself was simply an asshole. He burned too many bridges and lots of people were sitting on the side lines waiting for his downfall. But he did however go on to produce the Beatles last record as well as John Lennon and George Harrisons solo records. The very last record he worked on was for the punk rock group The Ramones.
Phil had a fondness for guns over the years and was known to pull them out in the studio on some of his musicians, As some of you may know he is at present in the news on trial for the murder of an actress he picked up at a club in Los Angeles. Regardless of his stupid and reckless behavior Spector did indeed make some wonderful music. Below will be some examples.
