Potato cannon gang caught

From our local radio station: The German police have caught a gang of 12 young people between the age of 13 and 24 and charged them with violations of the unlicensed weapons law. They had a cannon with which they fired potatoes at residential buildings. The "ammunition" can even penetrate plywood, and several inhabitants were injured by shattering windows.

Now, that's what I'd call a weapon novelty. They should try to sell it to the pentagon... 😛

Shattering people's windows should get them arrested, but there are a lot worse criminals out there than potato cannon buliders.

Shattering the windows is just an offense, but building and using an unlicensed weaopon is charged as a crime.

Of course, there are much worse crimes. I was just a little bit impressed by the originality of the invention, and amused by the fact of food being used as a weapon.

Dude! That's so F***ing KEWL! I used to be a rabid paintballer... but this sure as hell doesn't sound like something that would fly at a professional p/b field. Way too modern to suit me...

About 35 yrs ago, a German neighbor of the big NATO air base at Ramstein declared war on the US Air Force. Don't recall the reason, maybe the jets were rattling his collection of Dresden china.

He announced his declaration in telephone calls to the base and the local newspaper. Then he attacked the base with a home-made trebuchet (a sort of catapult) using potato dumplings as ammunition. He actually scored a hit on a Military Police jeep that was patrolling the air base side of the fence.

My uncle was stationed at the base. He said that it made news in Germany at the time. It also got into European Stars and Stripes. It even got picked up by a US-based news service, I saw it on an inside page of my home town newspaper.

I don't recall what happened to the man. He probably got a talking-to by the German authorities for constructing an illegal weapon.

Potato guns are no joke. I've seen what one of those can do to the side of an automobile, which made me wonder what it could do to a ribcage or somebody's skull.
