pro Dodgers only thread

Well it only took 16 innings in LA but the Dodgers handed the Cincinnati Reds their 5th straight loss. Ramon Martinez on the first pitch he saw off of new pitcher Ryan Franklyn sent the what was left of the Dodgers Stadium crowd home happy as he crushed the ball into the left center field stands. Dodgers win 6-5. With the win, the Dodgers stay 3 games ahead of the Padres. With the loss, the Reds now trail the San Diego Padres by a half game in the wildcard standings. Derek Lowe picks up the win in relief and Ryan Franklyn lost. Milagros will give you all the details in the morning. Final score from La La Land: Dodgers 6- Reds 5.

Walk-off Homerun by Martinez Gives Dodgers Victory in the 16th
-----------------------------------------------------------------

If Dodgers manager Grady Little was planning a cozy, postgame dinner with his wife to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary, the best they could do was breakfast at one of those all-night joints.

Ramon Martinez homered leading off the 16th inning, Jeff Kent went 4-for-7 with a home run and Los Angeles beat Cincinnati 6-5 Tuesday night to knock the Reds out of the NL wild-card lead.

The Dodgers have played 14 or more innings on five occasions this season, and this was the first time they won. A total of 461 pitches were thrown in a game that lasted 4 hours, 54 minutes, with the Dodgers using 20 players and the Reds 22.

"We did a lot of good things. It's just unfortunate that it took us 16 innings to get the biggest thing we needed," Kent said. "We've played good in all the extra-inning ballgames, but we've just been stretching it out too long. You end up getting too tired, using all your guys and not taking advantage of all your opportunities. Ramon hasn't played a lot, so that was good for him and good for us."

It's the first time since June 13 that the Reds don't have at least a share of the lead in the wild-card race, which San Diego leads by a half-game over Cincinnati and Philadelphia. The Reds remain 3½ games behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

"You can't think about anything other than winning ballgames," reliever Scott Schoeneweis said. "We can't worry about what St. Louis is doing, and there are so many teams locked in for the wild card. So it doesn't matter who's playing who -- someone is going to gain some ground. So we just have to go out and concentrate on winning, and the rest will take care of itself. We've got as good a shot as anybody."

Brandon Phillips was 4-for-7 with a home run and two RBI for Cincinnati, but he grounded into an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners in the 10th against reliever Takashi Saito. Adam Dunn also had four hits and Rich Aurilia homered for the Reds, who have lost five straight.

Rafael Furcal homered for the Dodgers, who maintained their three-game lead in the NL West with their fourth straight victory.

Derek Lowe (12-8), who came out of last Saturday's start at Arizona after taking a line drive off his glove hand, made his first relief appearance since the 2004 AL division series and pitched three innings of one-hit ball for the win.

"He's a hard guy to keep in one seat because he's always moving around, so it's good to give him something to do," Kent joked.

Ryan Franklin (5-7), the eighth Cincinnati pitcher, made only one pitch -- which Martinez drove over the fence in left-center for his second homer of the season.

"I wasn't trying to end it. I just wanted to get on base," Martinez said. "I'm not a home run hitter, so I don't even know what was going through my mind when I hit it. I was just running the bases. It was a long game, but we battled through it."

Phillips put Cincinnati ahead 5-4 in the sixth with an RBI single. The Dodgers tied it in the bottom half against reliever Matt Belisle on a bases-loaded RBI single by Furcal with none out.

Edwin Encarnacion, who failed to drive in a runner from third base in each of his first three at-bats Monday night, came up with the bases loaded in the fifth and Cincinnati trailing 4-3. Reds pitcher Eric Milton was forced at the plate on Encarnacion's grounder, but Ryan Freel scored the tying run on a grounder by Ken Griffey Jr.

Phillips got Cincinnati on the board in the second against Mark Hendrickson with his 15th homer and second in two nights. Aurilia sliced the Dodgers' lead to 4-3 in the fourth with his 19th of the season, a two-run shot that followed a leadoff single by Griffey that extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

"You can't count them out. They keep coming at you," Little said. "They hit the ball out of the park, and they've proven they're capable of playing games in September that mean something."

Wednesday's game: Dodgers 7, Reds 3

Maddux Wins 330th as Dodgers Complete a Sweep of the Season Series
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Greg Maddux earned his 330th win to move into 10th place on the career list, which he acknowledged was ''kind of cool.''

Pitching for a contender puts things in an entirely different perspective.

Maddux worked seven solid innings, and the Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-3 Wednesday night to complete one of the most successful months since the franchise moved to Los Angeles in 1958.

Off on Thursday, the Dodgers will begin September with a three-game lead over San Diego in the NL West - not bad considering they were in last place a month ago at this time. That's when they acquired Maddux from the Chicago Cubs, a team that had no chance to make the playoffs.

''You try harder,'' Maddux said when asked about pitching for a contender. ''You're not pitching for yourself. Any time you're not pitching for yourself, you do better.''

The Dodgers went 21-7 in August, matching their highest single-month victory total since the move west from Brooklyn. Six of those wins came over Cincinnati for their first season sweep of the Reds while playing in Los Angeles.

Maddux (12-11) allowed two runs and eight hits in seven innings while walking none, striking out three and throwing 77 pitches before being relieved by Brett Tomko to start the eighth.

Maddux entered the game tied with Steve Carlton for 10th on the career wins list.

''I had a chance to watch him pitch a few games,'' Maddux said. ''I've always admired what he did on the mound.''

Maddux, who pitched six hitless innings Aug. 3 in Cincinnati in his first game with the Dodgers, is 5-0 with a 2.40 ERA against the Reds this season. He beat them three times while pitching for the Cubs before being traded to Los Angeles.

''He doesn't have 300 career wins for nothing,'' Cincinnati's Ken Griffey Jr. said. ''I mean, there's a whole lot of other teams he's beaten. It just so happens that it's magnified because we're in a pennant race.''

The 40-year-old right-hander also drove in two runs with a single and a suicide squeeze, and started double plays in the second and fourth after fielding grounders. Maddux has won 15 Gold Gloves in his career.

The Reds have lost six straight to fall to .500 for the first time since they had a 1-1 record. They trail St. Louis by 4 1/2 games in the NL Central.

''At the beginning of the year, nobody even put us in contention,'' Griffey said. ''So to be in this position, we've obviously done some things right. Look at those guys. I mean, didn't they lose like 11 in a row? And now look at them. So, obviously, we could turn it around just like they did. And that's what you've got to look forward to - getting on the right track.''

Maddux brought a .113 batting average to the plate when he lined a two-out single to center off Aaron Harang (13-10) in the second to put the Dodgers ahead for good. Russell Martin's RBI single in the fourth and J.D. Drew's run-scoring triple in the fifth made it 3-0.

Jason LaRue snapped an 0-for-30 slump by hitting Maddux's first pitch of the sixth over the left-field fence for his sixth homer. Wilson Betemit and Martin hit one-out singles in the bottom half before Maddux laid down a perfect bunt, driving in Betemit. Maddux received a standing ovation as he left the field.

The Reds made it 4-2 in the seventh on Scott Hatteberg's run-scoring single. With two outs and two on, pinch-hitter Javier Valentin hit a liner that appeared headed for right field, but first baseman Nomar Garciaparra lunged to knock the ball down and underhanded to Maddux for the out.

The Dodgers hit three solo homers in the eighth, with Betemit connecting off Scott Schoeneweis, and pinch-hitter Olmedo Saenz and Rafael Furcal going back-to-back against Matt Belisle.

An RBI single by Reds pinch-hitter Todd Hollandsworth in the ninth completed the scoring.

Harang allowed 10 hits and four runs in six innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

Friday's game: Dodgers 6, Rockheads 3

Lowe Pitches to Victory, Scores Run as Well
-----------------------------------------------

Out of the bullpen, in the rotation or at the plate. Derek Lowe wants to help the Los Angeles Dodgers win anyway he can.

Lowe came back from a rare relief appearance earlier in the week to earn his 13th victory Friday night in a 6-3 win over Colorado, Los Angeles' sixth in a row.

He also scored the Dodgers' first run.

"We've pressed him the last four or five days," Los Angeles manager Grady Little said. "He knows he's at the top of his game and he's proving it by going out and getting wins for us."

Lowe (13-8) gave up three runs on seven hits in five innings, walking three and striking out one. He singled sharply to center and scored in the third inning against Jason Jennings (7-12).

"It's the time when wins are wins, however you get them," the Dodgers' right-hander said. "Our bullpen did a fantastic job. It seems like every day, somebody different steps up."

Offensively, it was Wilson Betemit, who hit a solo homer in the eighth and had an RBI double. Rafael Furcal added a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single.

The victory increased the Dodgers' NL West lead to four games over San Diego, beaten 6-2 by Cincinnati.

"You can't get excited about a four-game lead at this point, but we like our position," Lowe said.

He went three innings and picked up the win in a 6-5, 16-inning victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday, allowing one hit and throwing 22 pitches. The relief appearance was his first in the regular season since 2001.

He threw 82 pitches during his five innings against the Rockies.

In his previous start, last Saturday in Arizona, the right-hander had to leave after 3 2-3 innings when a line drive by Chad Tracy struck him on his left hand.

Los Angeles fell behind the Rockies, but came back to go up 4-3 with three runs in the fourth inning.

Betemit doubled to right to score Jeff Kent from second and move Andre Ethier to third. Ethier then scored on a wild pitch by Jennings, with Betemit taking third. Betemit scored shortly afterward on Furcal's sacrifice fly.

The Dodgers added an insurance run in the sixth on consecutive singles by Russell Martin, pinch-hitter Marlon Anderson and Furcal. Anderson was making his Dodgers debut following Thursday night's trade from Washington.

Takashi Saito pitched the ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances.

Jennings gave up five runs on eight hits in six innings.

"We scored three runs, we needed a shutdown inning and we weren't able to get it," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said.

He said the sequence that got Jennings in trouble in the third -- a walk to Ethier after Jeff Kent's single to center and a pitch over the plate to Betemit -- wasn't characteristic of the Rockies' right-hander.

"He's been nails for us for two months, and it's probably one of the few leads he's had that he's given up," Hurdle said.

Kenny Lofton provided the Dodgers' first run, doubling in Lowe.

Saturday's game: Dodgers 14, Rockheads 5

Garciaparra Gets 6 RBI as Penny Wins 15th Game
---------------------------------------------------

The Los Angeles Dodgers were playing great while Nomar Garciaparra was on the disabled list. So putting together another impressive winning streak during his recent dry spell wasn't much of a stretch.

Garciaparra was the offensive spark Saturday night in the Dodgers' 14-5 rout of the Colorado Rockies. His three-run homer and a three-run double helped Brad Penny become the National League's first 15-game winner and kept the NL West leaders four games ahead of second-place San Diego.

"All good hitters go through periods where they're just not coming up with opportunities, or making good on the ones they get," second baseman Jeff Kent said. "But what's good about this team is that everybody is pulling some weight, and we don't have to rely on one guy. So when a guy is going through something like that, you just pat him on the back and say 'Good luck,' because you know that good things will eventually happen."

Garciaparra's six RBI were his most since he had eight for the Red Sox on July 23, 2002, with Boston.

"I've been getting on top of the ball a little bit and working hard at driving the ball," said Garciaparra, who was 2-for-18 on the homestand before the home run. "My swing has been there, but sometimes the ball just wasn't finding holes. So you tell yourself you're having good at-bats and you keep working hard."

J.D. Drew and rookie James Loney also homered for Dodgers, who have won seven straight and are 26-7 since a 1-13 stretch immediately following the All-Star break. They are a season-high 11 games over .500.

If the Dodgers do beat out San Diego for the division title, the Rockies will have had a lot to with it. Colorado is 3-12 against Los Angeles -- and 10-6 against the Padres.

"That's great, because we haven't helped ourselves out much with the Padres," Kent said. "That's what's great about this game. Everywhere you look, there's something that's unpredictable and things happen that you just can't explain."

Penny (15-7) eclipsed his previous career high for wins after being staked to a 7-0 lead. The right-hander allowed five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out two and did not walk a batter, after giving up nine walks over his previous two outings.

Penny was 5-0 against the Rockies this season with a 1.93 ERA -- becoming the first pitcher ever to beat them five times in one year. The last Dodgers pitcher to beat any team five times in a season was Orel Hershiser, who was 5-0 against Atlanta during his 1988 Cy Young campaign.

Colorado was blanked on four hits over the first five innings, but rallied with five in the sixth to slice the Dodgers' lead to 7-5. But the Dodgers responded with six in the bottom half to increase the margin to 13-5. The big blow was Garciaparra's bases-clearing double against Ramon Ramirez, but five of the runs were charged to Jeremy Affeldt.

Aaron Cook (9-13) allowed seven runs and six hits over five innings. One of the hits was Garciaparra's 15th homer, which ended the right-hander's streak of 78 2/3 innings this season without allowing a home run on the road.

Cook has made 28 starts, which is a major accomplishment in itself considering that his career nearing ended in 2004 when he underwent two surgeries to remove blood clots from his lungs.

"He's never experienced a full major league season before. A lot of people have lost sight of that," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "Grace period? Yes, but not because of his health. It's because it's the first time he's working his way through a major league season from start to finish. His health is fine and he's strong. He feels better than he's ever felt, and definitely better that when he went into the hospital."

Colorado is a season-worst 11 games off the pace in the NL West following its ninth straight road loss, and in danger of consecutive last-place finishes for the first time in the team's 14-year history. The Rockies were tied for first on July 5 with a 44-40 record, but are only 18-33 since then. They have finished no better than fourth place since 1997 -- the year before the Arizona Diamondbacks came into existence.

😀 😀

Doug Davis pitched a complete game 4 hit shutout and Cory Hart slugged 2 homeruns and drove in 6 as the Brewers dumped the Dodgers 9-0. With the loss and the Padres beating the Rockies 5-4 , the Dodgers lead in the West is now 1 game. The Dodgers have now lost 3 straight. The Dodgers conclude this series this afternoon in Milwaukee before they head to New York to take on the Mets.

Wednesday's game: Dodgers 2, Brewers 1

Lowe Fabulous as Dodgers Break Losing Streak
-----------------------------------------------

For Dodgers manager Grady Little, the only thing to discuss was Derek Lowe.

Lowe allowed three hits and an unearned run in eight innings to help the Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 Wednesday night and stop a three-game losing streak.

''Anything you said about this game outside of talking about Derek Lowe's performance would be secondary,'' Little said.

Matt Kemp scored the tying run and drove in the go-ahead run for Los Angeles, which avoided getting swept in the three-game series. The Dodgers, who trailed in the NL West by 7 1/2 games on July 26, remained one game ahead of second-place San Diego.

The Dodgers had gone 16 scoreless innings over three games before Kemp scored on Rafael Furcal's sacrifice fly in the fifth.

''It was a win we needed to have,'' said Lowe, who got 20 groundball outs. ''We scraped across two, and that was enough.''

Lowe (14-8) won his fifth straight decision, giving up a double to Geoff Jenkins in the second, a single to Corey Hart in the third and an infield hit to Kevin Mench in the eighth. Lowe was 4-1 with a 1.69 ERA in August and has allowed only six earned runs in his last six outings.

Now the Dodgers head to the Mets for a four-game series.

''Hopefully, this is the momentum we need to go into New York, where we all know where they stand in the division,'' Lowe said. ''They're probably going to win it any day.''

Lowe said that the Dodgers watched a lot of video of the previous two losses to Milwaukee.

''Being a sinkerball guy, you normally don't get that many right-handers in the lineup,'' Lowe said. ''So, I think that definitely helped, having them only with two left-handers. Right-on-right is normally more effective.''

Brewers manager Ned Yost said Lowe's sinker is what makes him so effective.

''The bottom falls out of it,'' Yost said. ''It just disappears. You just pound it into the ground.''

Takashi Saito followed and worked the ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances.

Los Angeles, which lost a series to the Brewers for the first time, is 41-20 against Milwaukee.

Chris Capuano (11-10) dropped to 1-6 in his last 11 starts, allowing two runs and five hits in eight innings.

''Cappy just matched up with the wrong guy,'' Yost said.

Milwaukee went ahead in the second when Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch, Bill Hall reached on a forceout and left fielder Andre Ethier misplayed Jenkins' double down the line for an error that allowed Hall to come around.

Kemp tripled in the fifth and came home on Furcal's sacrifice fly, then hit an RBI single in the seventh after Russell Martin's leadoff double.

It is a final from Shea Stadium as the Mets welcomed the Dodgers back to New York with a well pitched well played 7-0 shutout of the now Los Angeles Dodgers. Brad Penny 3-10 lifetime against the Mets did not have his good stuff as he hung curves and the Mets bashed them. The highlight of this game though other than Tom Glavine picking up his 288th career win ( tying him with former Dodger Tommy John ) was Jose Reyes who hit a 3run inside the park homerun. It was Reyes 18th homerun of the season and his first career inside the park homerun. The Mets magic number to clinch the NL East is 7. The Dodgers lead over the Padres is now 1/2 game in the NL West. Final from Shea, Mets 7 - Dodgers 0. :bowing:

Tonight in front of a crowd of 52,077 very few fans went home happy except maybe Milagros as the Dodgers shutout the Mets in game two of this four game set 5-0. Dodger's rookie Kuo pitched 6 effective innings giving up 3 hits as the Dodgers beat the Mets for only the 2nd time this season. John Maine was the tough luck loser in the game for the Mets.

Friday's game: Dodgers 5, Mets 0

I was there. Young (25) Hong-Chih Kuo got his first major league victory tonignt, ptiching 6 shutout innings. He had a no-hitter going into the 5th inning, in fact. Furcal and Garciaparra hat solo HR's.

It was a fine game. 😀 😀

I commend TF4F for posting the box score for a game whose result he obviously didn't like.

Kuo Get First Major League Win as Dodgers Blank Mets
--------------------------------------------------------

Hong-Chih Kuo reacted to the news that he would get another start in the Los Angeles Dodgers' rotation with the same calm that he exhibited in his first start.

"Just got to get ready," he said with a blank look.

Nomar Garciaparra and Rafael Furcal homered to help Kuo get his first major league victory in the Dodgers' 5-0 win over the New York Mets on Friday night.

Kuo (1-4) yielded three hits, struck out seven and walked three in six innings on Taiwan heritage night at Shea Stadium. He became the third Taiwanese pitcher ever to start a game in the major leagues.

"We knew he was limited with the number of pitches that he had to work with because of his inexperience starting games this season but he got us very deep into that game with a good quality start out there," said Dodgers manager Grady Little, who announced afterward that Kuo would start against the Cubs on Thursday. "We're proud for him."

Kenny Lofton had two hits and an RBI for the Dodgers, who won for only the second time in their last six games. The win also ensured another day in first place for Los Angeles, which led the NL West by a half-game over San Diego heading into play Friday.

The Mets, who were blanked for the second in time five days, only managed four hits against Kuo and three relievers -- Brett Tomko, Jonathan Broxton and Takashi Saito.

"(Kuo) was throwing that breaking ball for strikes, which is not his strength," Mets right fielder Shawn Green said. "He's got that 95 (mph) fastball and once you are behind in the count you've got to look for it. He's a little funky."

David Wright had two hits for New York but also committed a costly throwing error that led to two runs for the Dodgers. John Maine (5-4) lost for the first time since July 8 against Florida.

"He stayed pretty focused for the most part," Mets manager Willie Randolph said of Maine. "He has pitched great for us. Every once in a while you have one like this."

Furcal led off the fifth with his 10th homer to put Los Angeles in front 3-0. One batter later, Garciaparra hit an 0-1 pitch from Maine into the bleachers in left. The Dodgers almost had a third solo homer in the inning but Carlos Beltran timed his jump perfectly, sticking his glove over the wall to take one away from J.D. Drew.

Kuo held the Mets hitless before Wright led off the bottom half of the fifth with a single to center. Green then singled to left but Kuo struck out Chris Woodward and got Lastings Milledge to bounce to shortstop Furcal, who started an inning-ending double play.

"He was throwing nasty, pitching great," Furcal said.

Kuo was subbing for injured right-hander Chad Billingsley, who is working his way back from a strained side muscle and is slated to return to the rotation next Saturday against San Diego.

The left-hander did well in Billingsley's absence in his first start after 23 relief appearances to start the season. He was converted to a starter last month at Triple-A Las Vegas.

"I feel a little better for the warmup and stuff," Kuo said. "For me right now, just whatever they put me at I've got to do it. I've got to go for it, try to finish my job."

The Dodgers pushed across two unearned runs in the first to snap the Mets' scoreless streak at 25 innings. With the bases loaded and two outs, Marlon Anderson hit a grounder to third that Wright appeared to bobble for a second before throwing wide of first.

"It had a lot of spin," Wright said. "I couldn't get a good grip on it. The ball was rolling around, so I just threw it away."

Furcal and Garciaparra raced around to score to make it 2-0. Maine then struck out Wilson Betemit with runners on first and third to limit the damage.

Maine allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. He was 5-0 with four no-decisions in his previous nine starts.

I happen to be a VERY fair person. I call it like it is. If you like it fine. If you don't, I don't care. It works for me. I am very much a right down the middle person. By the way, it was a fine game for your Dodgers. But the Mets magic number remains 7 as the Phillies beat the Marlins 3-2.

The Mets take game #3 of this four game series by a final score of 3-2. Orlando Hernandez picked his 10th win and the Mets handed Greg Maddux his 13th loss of the season. This was a well pitched game but it was David Wright's 3 hits and 2RBI that was the difference in this game as the Mets beat the Dodgers by the final of 3-2.

Sunday's game: Dodgers 9, Mets 1

Rookie Stults Gets Victory for the Dodgers in His First Major Start
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe the Los Angeles Dodgers should try some more first-time starters.

Eric Stults became the second Dodgers rookie pitcher to shut down the Mets, limiting New York to two hits over six innings in a 9-1 rout Sunday.

Stults, a 26-year-old left-hander making his first major league start, combined with three relievers on a three-hitter. On Friday, Hong-Chih Kuo and three relievers teamed on a four-hitter in a 5-0 win.

"There's no way we could ask for any better," Dodgers manager Grady Little said. "We had two kids that we knew we could put out there with decent stuff, that we knew they would compete."

Kenny Lofton gave Stults the lead with a three-run triple in the third off a shaky Steve Trachsel, and Nomar Garciaparra added a three-run homer and four RBI for the Dodgers, who began the day with a 1½-game lead over second-place San Diego in the NL West.

The Mets, who beat Brad Penny and Greg Maddux in the other two games of the series, saw the magic number for clinching their first NL East title since 1988 trimmed to four when Philadelphia lost to Florida.

Pitching in place of Mark Hendrickson, who is working on his mechanics while pitching in relief, Stults gave up a single up the middle to his second batter, Endy Chavez, and didn't allow another hit until Jose Reyes homered to left-center with two outs in the sixth.

After Chavez's hit, Stults got Paul Lo Duca to hit into an inning-ending double play.

"I had to kind of regain my composure and, fortunately, after that I kind of settled in and felt really comfortable," Stults said. "You get through that first inning and nothing was hurt, put up a zero, it's always easier to go out there the next inning. It takes a little pressure off."

Stults (1-0) struck out three and walked two, throwing 86 pitches, and he also got his first major league hit. He was 10-11 with a 4.23 ERA this season at Triple-A Las Vegas, then allowed three runs and five hits over three innings in his major league debut Tuesday at Milwaukee.

"That helped a lot. That took a lot of the nervousness away," he said.

Stults' wife, 7½-month-old daughter, parents and in-laws all were on hand to watch. He had spoken to his wife about the start Saturday night.

"She was asking, `Are you nervous?' I decided to kind of tell her and tell myself that it's still baseball. You still have to go out and execute pitches," he said.

Stults and Kuo spent much of the last few years together as they both came back from elbow ligament replacement surgery.

"It was special watching Kuo go out and do what he did," Stults said. "That helped a little bit. He kept cheering me on today."

There was a solemn ceremony before the game marking Monday's fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but by the sixth inning it resembled a spring training contest at Vero Beach or Port St. Lucie, with both teams liberally substituting.

Trachsel (14-7) lost his second straight start after going 12-1 in an 18-start stretch from May 23 through Aug. 29.

After Trachsel retired his first six batters, Los Angeles loaded the bases on three third-inning singles. Lofton, who had been 0-for-6 with the bases full this year, batted with one out and worked the count to 3-2, then pulled a high fastball down the right-field line.

His helmet flipped off as he rounded second and he easily made it to third with a triple, then scored when Garciaparra singled over third baseman David Wright with the infield in.

"It's something mechanical I'm doing, something that's causing me to miss pitches or miss location," Trachsel said.

Perhaps putting his postseason starting spot in jeopardy, he allowed four runs, five hits and two walks in 2 2-3 innings, with his ERA rising to a season-high 5.17. Trachsel couldn't throw his curveball for strikes.

"Every once in a while, he's going to have a bad one," Mets manager Willie Randolph said. "I'm not concerned. He'll turn it around."

Fans booed as Trachsel walked off the mound.

"I don't know how I looked, but I'm definitely not happy," he said.

Rafael Furcal singled in a run in the fourth against Brian Bannister, Wilson Betemit hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Garciaparra made it 9-0 in the sixth with his 17th homer.

"At this point," Lofton said, "we have to just win."

I'm a sports guy but more into football.I also try my best to avoid the topic 'cause I am a rabid fan for my football team. Not to boast, but I do know stats pretty good and can hold my own on at least some of the numbers,who's-who stuff But concerning this thread, I'll say this:I got Steve Garvey's autograph when I was a youngster and he was a super nice guy.(I don't care what people say about him)Also, at a card-signing show I met and got Duke Snider's autograph.Still got the latter.

I was very fortunate not to see this game. But the fact that I posted boxscores of the previous three games, I felt I could not leave this game out. The Dodgers gain a split in this series and the Mets win the season series 4 games to 3. For the pure numbers though, the Mets drew 48,760 fans to the ballpark which put them over the 3 million mark for fan attendance this season. The Mets have now drawn 3,000,837 for this season with 8 home games remaining. As a sidebar, Milagros did you get your David Wright bobblehead doll today??? :jester:

I didn't get the Wright bobblehead doll, maybe they only gave them to kids.

Yesterday I got a Mets sports bag, and Thursday night I got a Mets ski hat. I still have those. Do you want them, TF4F?

Without rhyme or reason, I haven't been to Dodger Stadium or a baseball game since 1984(22 years).Pitiful, I know. Lemme say this, though:That last game I did attend Pete Rose was a player AND a manager in the game & that year.Don't think player/mgrs exist today.

Wednesday's game: Dodgers 6, Cubs 0

Penny Pitches Brilliantly in Dodger Victory
---------------------------------------------

The old fashioned scoreboard at Wrigley Field caught Brad Penny's attention and rightfully so.

Penny became the first 16-game winner in the National League and Rafael Furcal homered to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 6-0 on Wednesday night.

Nomar Garciaparra added a two-run double and Rafael Furcal had three hits and three runs for the Dodgers, who maintained a 1 1/2 games lead over San Diego in the NL West. The Padres beat the Reds 10-0 on Wednesday night.

''Every game from here on out is important. Especially when we see Cincinnati losing by six,'' said Penny. ''If we play the way we should, we should win the division or we'll all be disappointed.''

The Dodgers bounced back after suffering a 9-8 loss in 11 innings to the Cubs on Tuesday night. Los Angeles blew a 7-0 lead to Chicago, which has the worst record in the NL.

''At this point in time it's very important. It was big for him and it was big for this ballclub. It couldn't have come at a better time. He was strong throughout his outing. We got him a little lead and he was outstanding,'' said Dodgers manager Grady Little.

The Cubs have lost 20 of their last 26 games.

''You have to continue to go out there with the same mindset everyday. Has it been an easy season? No. It hasn't. But again like we've talk about, you're a professional, you have to continue to go out there and compete,'' said Cubs outfielder Matt Murton.

Penny (16-8) cruised for the easy victory. He pitched seven scoreless inning, scattering seven hits. He struck out six without allowing a walk.

He rebounded from a 7-0 loss to the Mets on Thursday. In that start, Penny gave up a season-high seven runs and 10 hits, including two homers, in 5 2-3 innings.

Cubs starter Angel Guzman (0-6) gave up a lead off double to Furcal in the fifth and walked Kenny Lofton. After a wild pitch, Garciaparra chased Guzman with a two-run double. Garciaparra scored on Marlon Anderson's sacrifice fly off Cubs reliever Will Ohman and Russell Martin hit an RBI-single to put the Dodgers up 6-0.

Guzman, who has yet to win a game in the majors, gave up five runs and eight hits in four-plus innings.

Furcal, who was the catalyst to the Dodgers lineup on Wednesday, led off the third inning with his 12th homer of the season.

''That's the key to everybody's lineup. He's a guy that's been making things happen his whole career. Great leadoff hitter, guy that has some pop and can hit the ball out of the ballpark so you just can't lay pitches in there,'' said Anderson.

With runners on first and third in the first inning and two outs, Jeff Kent blooped an RBI-single to score Furcal.

😀 😀

Wasn't that yesterday's news??? I thought you should know that the Cubs beat the Dodgers today 6-5. :wowzer: If you are going to inform us my friend then please give us today's information and not this old news that you gave us only a half hour ago. 😀

I posted the good news from yesterday as soon as I logged in to the TMF. It was rather late today since I had a very full day at work.

After losing 2 out of 3 to the lowly Chicago Cubs, what could possible be encouraging??? I think the good news is that the end of the season is near and you guys will start working on your golf swings with the Chicago Cubs. :wowzer:  😀

Tidbit from the Past

Not many know that former 3rd baseman Royal star/Hall of Famer George Brett grew up WANTING to play for the Dodgers.Brett was hoping to play in LA.He went to El Segundo High School here in California.(Along with former Baltimore pitcher Scott MacGregor) I apologize if that's off-track here, but it's just a tidbit of info.

Friday's game: Dodgers 3, Pondscum 1

Maddux Spectacular as Dodgers Win
------------------------------------------

Greg Maddux wasn't certain he would have kept pitching even if his no-hitter hadn't just been broken up.

Maddux held San Diego hitless through the first 6 1-3 innings Friday night in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 3-1 victory over the Padres that increased their NL West lead to 1 1/2 games.

The 40-year-old Maddux (13-13) finished the seventh inning, figured he had had enough and came out of the game.

Would he have continued if Brian Giles hadn't gotten that single?

''Probably, maybe, I don't know,'' Maddux said with a smile. ''My arm was OK. I was mentally tired.''

J.D. Drew had an RBI double off David Wells in the fourth inning, and Julio Lugo singled home Drew to stake Maddux to a 2-0 lead in the opener of a crucial four-game series against the second-place Padres - their last meetings of the season.

''They're all big now,'' Maddux said.

He pitched seven shutout innings, gave up just the one hit, walked three and struck out one in earning his 331st victory.

''Nothing this guy does surprises me,'' Los Angeles manager Grady Little said. ''There's a reason he's done what he's done in his career.

''A lot of us, and a lot of people in the stands would have loved to have seen him take a one-hitter into the ninth. But we have to look at the big picture.''

The ''big picture'' is keeping the 40-year-old Maddux at his best down the stretch. He threw just 68 pitches as he ran his record to 4-2, with a 3.07 ERA in nine starts since the Dodgers acquired him from the Chicago Cubs on July 31. He's 2-0 with a 1.25 ERA at Dodger Stadium.

''It was vintage Maddux tonight,'' San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said.

Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth for his 19th save in 21 chances.

The win was the Dodgers' fourth in 15 games against the Padres this year, and their first in six contests at Dodger Stadium.

With the loss, San Diego's NL wild-card lead was cut to 1 1/2 games over Philadelphia, which beat Houston 4-3.

The Padres' only run came in the eighth on a throwing error by second baseman Lugo, who was trying to complete a double play against Josh Barfield.

The 43-year-old Wells (0-1) gave up two runs and six hits in five innings.

He said he could appreciate Maddux's performance despite being on the losing end.

''I really do. I think any pitcher would. It's awesome,'' the Padres' left-hander said. ''You'd like to match zeros with him in those type of games, but somebody's not going to win.

''It would have been great if we both got no-decisions. But in a game like that, you just try your darnedest to match him, and if you don't, you tip your cap because the guy pitched a heck of a game for them.''

Bochy appreciated Wells' effort, saying he was hampered by a sore ankle.

''He's pitched with some pain and it was bothering him, especially when he was throwing breaking balls,'' Bochy said. ''He kept us in the game, but we couldn't do anything with Maddux.''

Los Angeles added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Olmedo Saenz off Alan Embree.

The Maddux-Wells matchup was their first in the regular season. In the 1995 NLCS, Maddux earned the win for Atlanta by holding Cincinnati to one run over eight innings in a 5-2 victory, with Wells taking the loss after giving up three runs in six innings.

Maddux, a four-time Cy Young Award winner, came to Los Angeles in a deal that sent shortstop Cesar Izturis to Chicago.

The Padres acquired Wells from Boston on Aug. 31 for minor league catcher George Kottaras.

Los Angeles first baseman Nomar Garciaparra left the game after he strained his left quad running to first base in the sixth inning.

''He's day-to-day and he doesn't think it's serious, but we'll know more tomorrow,'' Little said

Padres reliever Doug Brocail, who was charged with the Dodgers' third run, left the game with a strained right hamstring after running to cover first in the seventh. Bochy said he will miss some playing time.
