My girlfriend wanted to experiment with that whole pubic shaving thing, and now her whole pubic region is inflamed with red bumps and ingrown hairs. Is there anything she can do to treat the bumps or will she have to wait for them to clear up before engaging in any.... You know.

Hm yes quite. When shaving there...
DO NOT....use a disposable razor. Invest in one like venus or mach that have skin protection strips.
DO.....use baby oil after the shower right after coming out while the skin is still wet. Baby oil helps make sure the razor burn does not appear and keeps the skin smooth.
DO NOT....use anything less that hot water. The steam helps your skin and opens your pores and makes shaving easier. Cold water just causes bumps than can be easily nicked.
DO....Make sure to shave downward first then from other angles. I will help get the hair and make sure to reduce razor bumps.
DO NOT....shave EVERYDAY. It will irritate your skin and it's best to 'let it grow' till it's a few centimeters long then shave again. There will be MUCH less agitation and bumps on general if done this way.
DO....use a shaving cream that contains things like Vitamin e, lanolin, or baby oil. It definitely improves the overall result. The smoother the surface you shave over (As assisted with the shaving cream) the less problems you will have.
For now simply moisturize the area with baby oil to help soothe the skin. The bumps will recede, I promise. If she insists upon continuously doing it if she likes it better shaved, the better idea is to get it waxed. The hair stays gone longer, the pros know what they are doing, and there is less of a chance of ingrown hair. Hope I helped!

Thanks for the info, AR! I will pass this advice on to my hubby, who experiences major skin irritation from shaving his face. He uses cheap disposable razors and cold water, which might explain some of the problem.

ALSO! Never use products that contain alcohol products to soothe it (certain lotions), it will just make it burn and break out in MORE bumps. That's why I recommend the oil. It works WONDERS while done right after a hot shower or exposure to hot water, after about an hour the skin is incredibly smooth. Although if you want to experiment, try different lotions and post which works best for her! For me NO lotion works, it's too harsh for my skin after shaving. 🙂
(That's why one always should try to look for even the deodorants that contain no alcohol. If it stings to put it on after shaving underarms, you know it has it!)

When I shave body hair (pubic or otherwise) I use the same shampoo I use on my hair. I don't want to buy a seperate shave gel and hubby's shaving cream is kept by the sink and I never think of it. it works fine though.
I agree that you MUST put something on there to keep it from getting irritated. I use regular stick deoderant, and it works well, but I dont know if it works better than baby oil or not. Will have to try the oil next time.

I have naturally oily skin tone and I tried several lotions and oils before and it only resulted in zits inside the ingrown hairs and irritation.
For oily skin, I recommend baby powder to dry up any excess moisture in any sensitive areas. Pubic, armpits, etc.

Use conditioner as a shaving cream.... works so good! And use scissors or an electric razor on it first to shorten the hair.
Honestly though, if you want an awesome job.... get it done professionally. Seriously, they know what they are doing

It may be the type of shaving cream she used You may wanna try a type without dyes/permumes/oil I started using Neutrogena razor defense gel It has no oils or dye in it It's helped out
1) Do not shave every day.
2) Soak the place you are going to shave in hot water (like take a bath) for about 15 minutes before shaving.
3) Use a very good quality razor, such as a Mach 3 Turbo.
4) Good razors have strips on them to stretch the skin out before the razor hits the hair - this reduces razor burn effect. Be sure to not press to lightly or too firmly with your razor.
5) A good shaving cream is hair conditioner, it's nice and slick. Rub it on against the grain of the hair.
6) After you finish shaving, apply a generous amount of witch hazel (you can buy this anywhere you can find bottles of isopropyl alcohol. Use this as your "after shave". It will work wonders to minimize razor burn and any other ill effects.
As a side note, if you are female and prone to UTI (urinary tract infections) or yeast infections, try shaving your pubic hair off completely for a few weeks and see if it helps.
For males specifically, you'll want to stretch and contort your skin with your hands by pulling and tugging until it is flat and taut before you run a razor across yourself. The hardest areas on males that I am aware of is the hair at the base of the shaft on the top. The hair growth here is thickest and the angle you hit is quite difficult to shave at. If you are shaving here, pull down on the shaft at an extreme angle and shave downward, if you shave up you are very likely to get nasty razor burn. If you are pulling down very firmly though when you let back up the hair you thought was there will have retracted back into the skin and it should be smooth to the touch.
