Now, I'm not wanting to get into a heated debate over this, just a simple question that I've been thinking about for some time now.

What is the difference between movie/video piracy and say someone having a sleepover and buying a movie/video and showing it to, say 5 or 6 people?

It's still paid for once, but the other 5/6 people never buy it because they've done saw it.

Now then, you might think 5 or 6 people is no big deal, but now, imagine a millionaire doing that [and you can't tell me that some of them don't do stuff like that], a guy with a movie viewing room in his house and that 5/6 people become something like 500 people that never buy the movie/video.

And, on that note, you would also have to make it illegal to let a friend barrow a movie/video from one another.

Like I said, it's just a question that popped into my head one night.

First MegaUpload.com. Then PirateBay.com. Now it's KickassTorrents.com. Wow, the US is on a full-scale piracy purge.

On a side note, I wonder what countries don't allow extradition to the USA under any circumstances and yet aren't a complete shithole to live in?

Not an expert on this by any means, but I believe copyright law already distinguishes between the 5-6 people scenario and the 500 people scenario. Like, if I understand things correctly, you would need permission to screen the movie in the latter.

Anyways, at the end of the day, piracy is taking someone's stuff without permission. Legally buying a movie is kind of the opposite of that. I don't think it comes down to anything besides that.

I have, like everyone, saw the FBI warnings on movies, but never took the time to read it [my eyes aren't great-and the print is so small]. So, I didn't know it said anything about the permission for a large screening. I don't really have to worry about the whole sleepover deal, myself. I have no friends that live close enough for a sleepover.
