What is your opinion on the late 90's series called Neon Genesis Evangelion? The reason I ask is that while looking for a good anime series on DVD at Best Buy, my friend recommended this series. I have mixed feelings about it, but the more I watch it the better I like it.

I really like the art. I'm not speaking so much of the characters themselves, but they are pretty good too. I like backgrounds, the cityscapes, and the detail of the surroundings.

I couldn't help but notice the sexual overtones throughout the series. And not with just between adults but between children and between adults and children. I suppose that at my age, I should be outraged and appalled, but actually I think it's kind of cool that they do it.

For example. Episode one. Shinji Ikari is 13 years old. He is waiting at the train station to be picked up by Captain Mitsato Katsugari, who will be his supervisor. He's never met her before. Mitsato is a very attractive woman I'd estimate at 25-27 years old. While Shinji is waiting for her, he's looking at the postcard she sent him, telling him were to wait, etc. This postcard has her picture on it, in which she is wearing short shorts and a bikini top, and is on her hands and knees in a "Doggie" position. Underneath her instructions to Shinji to wait for her, the note says, "In the meantime, check THIS out!" followed by a drawn arrow that points to her ample cleavage. To me, this seemed bizarre. Not offensive, you understand, just weird....but in a good way.

There are other such scenes featuring accidental exposures and so forth. For me it adds a very interesting dimension to an already cool series.

Actually, i think the charactors are 14, but i could be mistaken. That asside, as far as sexual overtones in the series, yes there is deffinitly a fair bit, but that is to be expected with anime.

I'm not sure how much of the series you've watched, but yes, there is deffinitly a lot of sexual tension there, particulerly some that is mixed between the adults and children. Part of it is the fact that these kids are about that age, noticing the other sex and such. However the main reason is actually every charactor in this series is fucked up in one way or another. As you watch the series more you'll see this.

Frankly, i'm so-so on the series. It's a classic, and one of the first ones i watched. However, halfway through the series, it becomes progressivly darker.

I didn't much care for it. I think it's overrated, but I have friends who think it's the greatest thing ever.

Drew, if you would like to check out an anime that in my opinion is the best out there, check out "Fruits Basket"

I would describe it as a drama/romantic comedy ....but it deals with alot of real issues, and it gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside. (lame, I know, LOL)

Top Notch stuff IMO.

Thanks for comments, Cosmo and Krokus. I'll definitely continue the series. And if I get a chance, I'll pick up 'Fruits Basket'

I don't know if I can be any more specific than "something interesting." I like action, character development, intricate plots that involve something mysterious going on that gets dealt with progressively throughout the series. I like some romance and sexual tension thrown in. Drama. Conflict. Resolution. I like good detailed art, and I like well thought-out plots. I guess that about covers it.

Let's see...some ones you might enjoy are "grave of the Fireflies" and "Milenium Actress". Both are incredible anime movies. "Grave of the fireflies" is about two young children during WW 2 who are left as orphans during the war and must struggle to survive on there own. It's an older movie, but it packs a powerful punch. "Milenium Actress" is a newer movie, the story of a young japanse woman who spends her life looking for young man she meets by chance and falls in love with, who gives her a key to "the most precious treasure in the world". This is an incredible movie that i can't recomend enough.

If you looking for something a little more action packed, i'd recomend "Berserk", an incredible series set in medievil times. The plot, charactor development, and art in this series are nothing short of amazing.

And if your looking for something more war based, i'd highly recomend "Gundam Seed". Set in the future, this amazing series focus on a war involving naturals (Normal humans) and Courdinators (genetically enhanced humans). The main weapons of war in this series are large, humanoid robots called Gundams. The colours, music and art in this series are amazing, as is the charactor developement as we watch the main charactor, a young courdinator, be forced to fight a war against his best friend, who happens by chance to be part of enemy forces.

There are many more i' sure that escape my mind at the moment, but you should deffinitly look up the ones i recomended.

Cool. I appreciate the recommendations. There's one question about the Evangelion series I meant to ask and forgot. At the end of each episode, Captain Katsuragi (the dark haired beauty) narrates the highlights of the upcoming next episode. She almost always wraps it up with a promise of something she calls fan service. "...It's all coming up next time, and we'll make sure to have some fan service for you as well!" She says this in a tone of voice akin to a babysitter promising ice cream to a child after dinner.

Does anybody know what this "fan service" is? I know that sometimes the translation from Japanese to English loses something, but this one really has me stymied. The closest I have to a guess would be that fan service might equate to the sexual aspects of the show; scenes that show cleavage or partial nudity of the females, that kind of thing. Am I way off here?

yup, you hit the hammer on the head there drew. Fan service is basically T & A. the devirsity of T&A in an anime series can very greatly from none at all to being almost nothing but, where almost all the woman have breasts that are out of proportion and jiggle almost non-stop and panty shots. :woot:

Fan service heavy shows are usually mixed in with either comedy or action generes, and vary in class from either being little more then fanservice shows to being very well down shows with a heaping of fanservice added.

Neon has never struck me as a fanservice heavy series though it's been a while since i watched it. I remember they did have a bit, but it was more like the series was lightly peppered, and later in the series....well, any fanservie takes a much needed backseat to the Drama of the series.

Another series i would highly recomend would be "Trigun". Frankly this is one of my favourite series, if not my favourite. It's an action comedy with amazing charactors and is a sort of western/sci-fi almagamation. This is one of the higest ranking series out there so it deffinitly should be something you look up.

Grave of the Fireflies is one of the best films I've ever seen, anime or otherwise. Excellent, but extremely depressing....

If you're looking for a good anime series, check out "Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex." Patlabor 2 is a good anime movie, and you can follow the story without having seen the first one.

Other good series include "Full Metal Alchemist" and "Trigun."

A lot of anime is crap, but there are plenty of good ones too.

As for Evangelion, I hear great things about it, but I've never seen it....

An obscure but visually stunning anime movie is "Wonderful Days," but it's hard to find.

I've got the series and the movie. I'n my opinion, one of the greatest anime's of all time. Action, comedy, drama, hot purple-haired women. It's pretty fricken sweet. I've your gonna watch it though, be prepared for some drama

I'm a fan of the "Vampire Hunter D" series (and this is coming from someone who normally hates anime.) Its a nice blend of sci-fi, horror and spaghetti western. If you're still looking for anime Drew (after one year making this thread lol) I highly recommend Vampire Hunter D and its sequel Bloodlust.

Cowboy Bebop is a pretty good series as well.

Wolf's Rain, Full-Metal Alchemist, Stand Alone Complex, Inuyasha, DBZ

There's an anime feature called Puni Puni Poemi that parodies all the various themes of classic superheroine anime, and the writers have a lot of fun with fan service. It's even more over the top than the usual in anime.

The Dirty Pair movies are pretty good for that too.

I liked Neon Genesis myself. It's so bleak (especially later episodes) that I hardly noticed the sex stuff. But looking back it's definitely there. Anyone who likes Evangelion might also enjoy Read or Die. It's a little lighter in tone.

Wow. I'd long forgotten about this thread. Here it is almost 2 years later. Well, I finished Neon Genesis Evangelion a good while ago. It was pretty good, and I would have to agree with Redmage and Cosmo that it does get pretty bleak. At least it ends on a fairly positive note.

Thanks again to all who responded.

Evangelion is one that i liked yet didn't like. The character development and growth are great and the series does hit you up with some thought provoking stuff. i don't know how to describe the cons without spoiling it.

Some of the ones i like:

Nekojiro Souu (cat soup) -- very bizarre, anime meets salvador dali.

Serial Experiments Lain -- Weird and cool, makes brain ouchie

Hana Yori Dango -- Anime teen drama... Never saw a series such as this in which i found myself glued to the computer for hours shouting obscenities at the main characters.

Air -- Kinda sad yet gorgeous artwork.

Elfen Lied -- the first cut scene is of a bleeding severed arm followed shortly by a naked chick in an iron mask, need i say more?

Ouran Highschool Host Club -- I found it kinda funny

Chobits-- Anime classic, everyone should see at least one Clamp series 🙂

And of course AMV Hell III, the whole movie is on google video here

I never said i had good taste in anime.

I loved puni puni poemi! If you enjoyed that, i'd highly recomend Excel Saga which basically came before PPP and was done by the same team. They even have a few of the same charactors, noticable Nabashin (Guy with the Aphro) and runs about...24 episodes i think.

the dirty pair movies are decent, and one of the first series of anime i watched.

Now a days, i'm reading/watching Naruto and Bleach, two series, that while certainly long, i highly recomend. I'd also highly recomend Full Metal Alchemist and Uereka 7 (Which i admit didn't really snag me until like a 25 episode, but one it did it pull a vice grip on my balls anddragged me through the rest of the series at light speed). Gumdum Seed is also a great series.

Of course, their are also some great classics still out there, like Grave of the fireflies, Princess mininoke, Milenium Actress, and probably several more i currently can't think of.

You know if you think about it, the ending of Neon is a rather ironic ending, when you look at it. The fact that you said that it ends on a positie note leaves me to believe that you haven't watched the movie yet, though correct me if i'm wrong. My personal advice is, if you were happy with the ending in the TV series, don't watch the movie, as from what i understand it illudes to an entirely different ending which is considerably more depressing and unfullfilling. While i never watched the movie, and glad i didn't, i have read extremely detailed acounts as to what happens in it and how it ends. My advice, advoid it like the plague.

I really liked Riegn: The Conqueror... That whole series was just badass.

Ruroni Kenshin was awesome, too.
