Ok,i'm a computer dummy.My keyboard needs a serious cleaning.Do i need to turn my computer off before i unplug the keyboard?
 
You shouldn't. If it connects via USB you definitely don't. If it connects via PS/2 you shouldn't have any problems either. (Visual comparison)

If you have a really old machine (decade+) with a really old type of connector you may have an issue.
