Honestly, if an insignificant individual who no one's ever heard of until just now can actually put American troops in more danger than they already are, then I'd say insurgents have some incredibly silly priorities, i mean you'd think bombings and death squads and racial segregations and backing corrupt governments would have a bigger effect on the Afghan/Iraqi psyche than what is essentially a glorified publicity stunt by a dude who's desperate for it.

It's also easy to sit on your ass and pass judgment when you think serving tours in the armed forces means you're automatically correct about everything. I don't recall serving tours in Iraq being a requirement for Psychology (which you seem to be practicing by claiming to know how people in the middle east think).

You conveniently left out the part where they're sentient beings who desire the same freedoms as everyone else.

That's one of the reasons we went to the middle east in the first place decades ago. A long time ago before we paved this road to hell, there were good intentions.

It is somewhat easier to sit on my ass and pass judgement when I ,as and individual,had to live among these people . Being in the Military and serving in distant combat zones does not make anyone automatically correct about anything....But it does give you the hands on experience to learn about the people and their culture. I'll leave the ' Psychology' part to people like you. What I practiced was 'Survival'. And it is less difficult to survive when one takes the time to learn about the people, customs and culture of the country your serving in ,be they your allies or your enemy.
The road to hell is ALWAYS paved with good intentions, but it always leads to the same place. My first service in the middle east was in 1982 in Afghanistan. It was in and 'Advisory capacity'. Now that circled around and bit us in the ass, but I guess that's because being in the Military,or contracted to the military, doesn't mean you are automatically correct about everything. And looking back, remember that Civilians, some probably with degrees in 'Psychology' sent us there.
And I didn't conveniently leave out anything. My advice to you is that before you run your mouth any further, you should experience the country and the people first hand. Then you'd have a better understanding of what I was trying to say. I may be somewhat rough around the edges and speak bluntly, but at least I know of what I speak. Of course they are 'sentient beings', but their culture and ideas of 'freedoms' are somewhat 'different' from those of the western countries.
I respect your opinons, but don't preach to me. I was not preaching to anyone, just stating my opinion from the stand point of someone who had experienced the situation.

For these people to understand what a 'better life' is,first everybody is going to have to stop shooting and blowing things up. That's not going to happen anytime soon no matter what the 'Powers that Be' try to feed the public.
Even if it means talking myself out of a job, I do hope that your research, whatever field it is in,comes up with better solutions to the problems that exist in the world today then the ones they've come with so far. Because their not working,and neither ,in the long run ,will the military option. At least,in my experience, not in that part of the world.
This thread was never meant to become a pissing contest on the middle east. I simply disagreed with another members opinion about the stupidity of a Publicity Seeker's burning of the Koran on 9/11 and the peril it could but our troops in. From there ,I was given a lesson in grammer, and labeled a number of things.
That's okay, I never tried to win a personality contest and if my grammical errors are offensive to some,then I'll work harder to appear more civilized, when I have the time. But the context of the original thread fell by the wayside a number of posts ago. No one is and expert on the middle east, only a fool would claim that... And in my experience, the 'Expert' is the guy who gets blamed when everything goes to hell, so whoever wants that job can have it.
But I do have 'Hands On' experience there,and all I was trying to convey was what I found to be true serving and fighting there.I took the time to learn about these people and their culture.And it paid off for me.Show respect and get respect. Everybody makes fun of Christians and Jews, and that's "okay", but you draw a picture of Mohammad (I don't think there is a standard way to spell his name in our alphabet), and some fruitcake will talk some crap, and the next day a group of idiots with bombs strapped to their chests will run into a crowd and blow themselves up. I apologize for that grammatical nightmare of a "sentence" that I just typed, by the way. Then there's that idiot president of Iran who says that the Holocaust was propaganda created by the scary "evil Jews". :rolleyes On top of that, you have even more radical "Muslim" terrorists who are dead set on attacking Israel. To be fair, in my world history class, I learned the pillars of Islam, and it seemed to be a peaceful and loving religion. From what I can tell, these terrorists are all a disgrace to the very religion that they claim to serve.

Of course, you also have to take into account that the closest thing any other religion has to radicals or terrorists is the Westboro Baptist Church. Although they spout hatred on a daily basis and are NOT Christian or Baptist in any way (When I was growing up, I attended a Baptist church, so I know what I'm talking about.), I'm pretty sure they've never murdered anyone.

I took psychology, and I can easily see where both sides are coming from on this issue. I'm a very reasonable guy, and I'll change my mind if I learn something that I didn't know before.

I'll start with the Quran-burning side. These people (the terrorists) have proven time and time again that they do not respond to our attempts at ass-kissing. You can try to talk to them all you want, but these people are bullies. I learned from an early age that the only way (or perhaps the most effective way) to defeat a bully is to show them that you are not going to take their crap anymore.

I didn't (and still don't) want the mosque at ground zero because that would be incredibly insensitive to the lives lost there. When I first heard about the book burning, I was proud. "About damn time somebody shows some balls around here!" But then I heard somebody on the news bring up a good point.

I don't want to needlessly endanger our soldiers overseas. I have some old high school friends in the Marine Corps and the Air Force, and I don't know what I'd do if I lost them.

Then of course you have the sane, normal Muslims who don't deserve what those terrorist bastards are doing to their reputation. It's kind of similar to what those creepy, pervy foot fetishists do to the reputation of respectable, normal people like me who happen to be attracted to a woman's feet. One bad apple makes the whole bunch look bad. Just ain't right.

Well, there you have it. My opinions. I'm undecided on the whole Quran burning thing now, but I still believe that the only way we're going to get those mad bombers off our backs is to show some spine.

In the religion of Al Islam, there's those who follow, and those who do not.
