This thread is for fans of rap. PLEASE, if you do not like rap, keep your comments to yourself. I don't want the smart ass remarks in this thread. Show some respect and don't insult the genre in this thread.

To the rap fans, i had a discussion with my 16 year old niece and it is amazing what the kids of today think. I had to sit down when my niece told me that Soulja Boy is better than 2pac. Yeah, she said it with a straight face. In my opinion, rap music of today is nowhere near the quality of rap of yesteryear. Lil' Wayne, Soulja Boy and the rest just do not appeal to me whatsoever. Neither does the "Dirty South" style of music. I guess I am a West Coast rap kind of guy. Artists such as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and 2pac are legends and will always be the most talented.

Even the rap in the 80's is still better than today. Guys like Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy, LL Cool J and even Biz Markie were pioneers and their styles are still better than rap of today.

Guys like Eminem and 50 cent are cool because they were "discovered" by Dr. Dre. I just can't get into Rick Ross, Lil' Wayne and the rest. What do you think?

Oh yeah, here are some videos from some of my favorites. Please tell me yours and post videos/music if you can.

2pac:

My favorite 2pac song... "So Many Tears"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA5qKkyVOWA (it is hard to find a good version on you tube...)

Ice Cube:

"Why we thugs" This beat is the sh*t...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj_g3uZPUss

"Until we rich" real nice beat...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73eEY3Qy_YE&feature=related

Dr. Dre:

"Keep their Heads ringing" remember this one?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWJqt0u_TCs

"Nothin but a G Thang". All time classic!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gK1e2TCFAA

Mack 10:

"Hoo Bangin". The beat is incredible...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CrLNTCjn70

WC:

"West Coast voodoo" gotta love the c-walk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tJZJSTmPc8&feature=related

Xzibit:

"Get your walk on". this video is really cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cCz4q0n9Mk&feature=related

Snoop Dogg:

"B Please" this beat is one of the greatest of all times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBMaYLrl3mU

Eminem:

"Lose Yourself". His best song in my opinion...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFYQQPAOz7Y

"Business" just love the beat and the way he flows

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdS3WVYr834

LL Cool J:

"I need love" a true classic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amHsMkeeCbs

"Mama said knock you out" damn i love this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7l250E5uM4

Public Enemy

"Can't Truss it" Ah, memories...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLhuv-kLj_I

Rap music of today can't even compare to this stuff. I look forward to seeing what others think of the rap game today versus yesteryear. Again, if you do not like rap, please keep your opinions to yourself. Don't show yourself to be a complete ass and make some smart ass remark. Thank you....

I may not post the links now, perhaps later. But I agree Rap back in the 80's and very early 90's is far superior and better (and a lot more fun) then the rap of today.

De La Soul
3rd Bass
Kwame the Boy Genius
Slick Rick
Nice N Smooth
D-Nice
A Lighter Shade of Brown

the list can go on and on.

I agree primetime....these kids today do not know what good rap is.

Rob

Glad you agree Rob! I looked up some of the videos from what you posted. *Sigh* man, I miss those days..Let's take a look.

3rd Bass:

"Pop goes the Weasel" I love the way they make fun of Vanilla Ice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzXI_ApY4dY

Slick Rick:

"Children's story". This is a CLASSIC!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRWKbxap1MQ&feature=related

De La Soul:

"Buddy"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F69dt5clGPo

Digital Underground:

"Humpty Dance" Man, I love this song to death..He even mentions tickling!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj9_yW8tZxs&feature=channel

Yeah, this stuff was great. Any others?

I know you said you didn't want to hear from any rap haters, but I'm going to comment anyway. Sorry 😉

Even though I consider myself a rap hater, I must admit I enjoy listening to some older rap songs, and I agree with what RobAce said, they were a lot more fun, and I'd also say that lyrics were wittier, drum beats and bass-lines were more original. Listening to songs like NWA's "Fuck the Police," or The Ghetto Boys' "Damn it Feels Good To Be a Gangsta" and comparing it to crap like "Air Force Ones" or anything by Soulja Boy is night and day. It seems like every new rap song released these days is a bunch of nonsensical yelling/rhyming over some rehashed beat created by a music machine. So even though I don't have the same appreciation of rap music you do, I still wholeheartedly agree.

Don't worry poopies, your comments aren't the kind I don't want to see.

As for today's rap game, I am not a big fan either. Seems like it is all the same style and the beat/lyrics are just not the same as "old school" rap. "Old school" rap is apparantly the 90's and older according to my niece....

I even miss the Fresh Prince days.....

Ah, the good ol' days..

There is good rap being made today too, but unfortunately, you never hear it on the radio. If you do, it's probably way on one end of the dial on Wednesdays at 1:43am or something.

MF Doom and The Roots are some of my favorite more recent rappers.

But if someone said Soulja Boy was better than Tupac, I might have to jump out of myself a little at them.

Yeah, I have something to contribute

When I was a little kid (before I discovered Metal and such), I used to hang out with my older cousins and they used to listen to and try to get me into rap. I still remember some of the stuff they used to play...brings back memories:

You got that right. Most of the performers today, I don't even know who they are.

Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, Douge E. Fresh, certainly Public Enemy, and many more, even the flash-in-the-pans of the time (Joskie Love's "Pee Wee Herman") or the comedy clowns like the Fat Boys or Beastie Boys - before they started rockin' about Tibet and such ; they could make you dance, or laugh, or come up with social commentary, or inspsire - or anger - while keeping a rythmn and without it only being about shootings, drugs or sex.

That was there, but it was part of the bigger picture - not the majority of the picture.

KRS-1's most succesful album was done mostly with just a drum machine. Salt N' Pepper before they became a reality show - great stuff!

And the wordplay, the use of rhymes & rythmn, it just isn't the same.

There's a musical complexity in today's rap that is admirable (how Buster Rhymes combines musical genres, for example - the use of classical strings in very streetwise rap; or how M.I.A. uses Australian instruments and Asian audio imagery). Then again, sometimes I miss that older simplicity.

And, although it a lot of it is dancable and catchy, how musically complex do you need to get with sound-alike songs about going to a party with tha' Bicardi, or sucking a lollypop at the candy shop? Things have gotten as bad in modern rap as they have in alternative/alrterna-pop.

The joining of metal and rap was a great innovation, too, although that isn't strictly "rap", just as when The Clash rapped back in 1980 on "The Magnificent Seven". Not really traditional in the sense we're talking.

Biohazard and Hed PE do an awesome job of metal rap fusion.

Comparatively speaking, today's rap sucks. You have rappers that think they're better than they really are like Kanye West and rappers that make very little sense like Lil Wayne. I need an ebonics translator to decipher what the hell that guy's talking about.

Today's rap is garbage, and it is sad that people who dont know the game are linking the greats of the past to this generation...makes me sic kto my stomach. I cannot even listen to a minute of this mess before I gag

How about these legends??

Most mainstream anything sucks these days. You have to do a little digging to find the real talent.

There's good hip hop out there.

There's good hip hop out there.

No doubt , AnnieHall. There are still some truly great hip hop acts currently out there doin' their thing. You've already mentioned The Roots & DOOM ... & Talib Kweli , Jurassic 5 , & Mos Def spring to mind , as well.

But back in the day , there was no "digging" to find the real talent. It was everywhere! Dope MCs were crawling out the woodwork smacking you in the face w/their lyrical stupendousness! It's just a damn shame for those who vividly remember the "good ol' days" of hip hop to see what's become of it.

But you're right , though ... you can say that for pretty much anything these days.

Speaking of DOOM , here's a couple vids from his days in K.M.D. when he was known as Zev Love X :

That's what I am talking about. Man, you guys have brought up some CLASSIC rap artists....Rap back in the 80's was definitely the best because it was new. They had beats you can jam to. Here are some other favorites...

Tribe Called Quest:

"Find a way": I swear this beat is just irresistable!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Haot80K_oKo

"Bonita Applebaum": This was just a funky groove..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-j-DCz_V3U&feature=related

Grandmaster Flash

"The message": Now THIS is a classic!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4o8TeqKhgY

EPMD

"You gots to chill": Another classic...
