As many of us now know, especially those close to the game of football, Reggie White, the dubbed "Minister of Defense" has succumbed to a surprise massive heart attack early this morning. Reggie was 43 years old.

As a life-long Vikings fan, I am genetically predisposed to hate the Green Bay Packers. However, there are four men who are or have been involved with the orginization that I have the ultimate respect for...Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr, Brett Favre...and Reggie White.

First off, the stats alone will etch Reggie into the annals of NFL history. An NFL career-record 198 sacks (at the time of his retirement). An NFL-record 9 consecutive seasons with double-digit sacks. The NFL two-time Defensive Player of the Year. Reggie retired with the career sack record but has since been passed by Bruce Smith. Reggie also hold the records for sack yardage lost and tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie called White "one of the greatest men ever to play the game of football."

"His legacy on and off the football field will never be forgotten," Lurie said in a statement.

A member of the NFL's 75th anniversary team, White was elected to the Pro Bowl a record 13 straight times from 1986-98. He was the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 1987 and 1998.

But it is the spirit and dignity of the man that will remain. A preacher off the field, he brought those values to the locker-room, the organizations he was a part of and to the game itself. A giving man, Reggie devoted most of his time off the field to charity organizations and his congregation.

Reggie had the first and largest impact in what we now refer to as the "Free Agency" era of football. Reggie's departure from the Philadelphia Eagles and signing with then-small-time Green Bay ushered in the era of big-name players having an impact with the teams they join. If you trace back the current era of football, it started with Reggie White. Green Bay had almost immediate legitimacy with the addition of Reggie White, and it was the first time that free-agency made a direct impact on a team's success. We all know what became of the Packers in the decade that followed, and Reggie White was a large part of that.

I would like to take a moment to echo the sentiments of Terry Bradshaw on today's Fox pre-game show and implore NFL Comissioner Paul Tagliabue and follow the lead set by Major League Baseball in the instance of the death of Roberto Clemente. Mr. Tagliabue, waive the five-year-retirement rule in the case of Reggie White and make him eligible for the Hall of Fame this year. Put him on the ballot.

If anyone deserves not only a place in Heaven, but an immediate spot in Canton, Ohio...it is Reggie White.

Rest in Peace, Reggie...

...and thank you, sir.

:sadcry:

I just found out about Reggie White. He spoke at my church about five years ago. I believe he was as loyal to his faith as he was to the game of football. I bid peace to his family who lost a faithful father, minister, and friend. He will always be remembered as the "Minister of Defense!"

It was quite shocking to say the least. Being from Pittsburgh we didn't play that much against him however being a true football fan you had to know The Minister Of Defense. He was a real class guy that will definitely be missed. The scary thing is he was only 43 years old. It just shows you just how short life truly is and we should not take any day for granted. My prayers go out to him and his family through this very trying time.

I remember him during his days with the Eagles. Being a lifelong giants fan, I have always looked at the Eagles as the enemy. I always remember reggie White as the cornerstone of the Eagles defense where Parcells would degign plays away from him. He was no doubt one of the best defenders in football during his time. I had ultimate respect for him.

My prayers and condolences go out to his family, friends, and the organizations who had the pleasure of having him while he played. It's a shame he won't be here to give his induction speech when he gets into the Hall of Fame. There is nobody more deserving than Reggie White, that is for sure

RIP Reggie and thank you for all the good years as a player, and, most of all, being a class act.

🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

Lazzy and I were in the car on our way up to northern WI to visit family for the holidays yesterday morning when we heard the announcement on the radio. Both of us stopped in mid-chatter, dropped our jaws into our laps, and stared dumb-founded at the radio. I felt like someone had just punched me in the stomach. Even Lazzy, a die hard Bears and Vikings fan, had a hard time choking back a flood of emotions. I think we're both still a bit in shock.

Whether you were a fan of any team Reggie played for or not, he was just one of those players (and people in general) who you respected. It was an automatic awe whenever he was giving an interview, making a speech, or taking another quarterback to the ground.

RIP Reggie. You were one of the best, and will NEVER be forgotten. It's breaking our hearts you had to leave us so soon.

Mimi

Damn... Reggie White has been one of my favorite football players since I was about 12 years old. He was a class act both on and off the field, and a phenomenal talent as well.

It's a shame to see him taken so young. 🙁

One of the greatest defensive linemen I've ever seen, and whether you loved or hated him, you had to respect. A perfect gentlemen, o a nd off the field. A true class act, who had left was too early. And he will be missed. The NFL lost a giant, one that will not easily be replaced😀

Being an Eagles fan I too stared at the radio when I heard the news!!

Dead at 43!! WOW

Too soon, what a great player and person!

He is the reason I started to love football in my youth...and what a great defense that team had...if only the offense wasn't soooo offensive then!!
The Eagles would loose games 10-7 or like that and the 7 points were scored by the defense!!!

That was a great D line in Bird land...but Reggie was also awesome in Green Bay where HE got his ring!

He will be missed!
