Aretha Franklin....(sorry, sorry, sorry....I just COULDNT let that one go)

As much as I love Aretha, I really RESPECT Otis Redding's original version:

Never talking down to someone or telling them that they're stupid for believing in God or liking Star Trek. Letting them express their feelings. Never interupting their stories and giving away the ending. Not blaming them for things that are your fault.

RESTECP....whats that spell?

As much as I'd love to feel the sensual sting of Steph's whip on my bare and beckoning bottom, I shall try to answer the question seriously.

Respect is a touchy subject to me. Being a Navy veteran, I recall hearing the saying, "Respect the uniform if not the man," in reference to the so-called "Superior Officers." The guy wearing the uniform could be a total jackass but yet we were required to salute him and call him "Sir" even though we'd prefer to receive tongue baths from the Golden Girls. I'm sorry, but if someone wants my respect, I don't give it out freely. Bullys in school expected us to 'respect' them just because they were bigger or stronger than the rest of us. Silly bastards. The "beautiful people" thought they deserved our respect just because they were blessed with a more attractive face. Maybe it's Maybelline. (I've got nothing against "Beautiful people," only those who think they're God's gift to everyone because of their looks) I could go on and on, which it appears I've already done. Respect is a two way street. Let's be considerate of each other despite our differences and we'll get along just fine.

Respecting someone is to show recognition of their value and their worth. It's to show consideration and concern and to give the feeling of being appreciated and honored. Respect is something that everyone deserves until they are deemed (for one reason or another) unworthy of it.
Respect can come in many different forms... verbal, physical and emotional being among them. You can show a person respect by the way you talk to them, by the way you treat them, and by your actions towards them.

This is a good thread Danny... maybe the idea will catch on and you'll get more serious responses... I kinda find the earlier jibes ironic considering the subject of this thread.

Well said and Well written Mz. Chaos.

I think a mod should talke your words and put them in the "Golden Rules" section of the TMF, if words to this effect are not there already.

For a man to respect a woman means for him to realize her value as a woman, and to hold that value in the highest regard. To communicate to her his understanding of that value. That any interaction with her in no way hurts or demeans her in any way. For a man to take pleasure inflicting pain on her and/or demean her in any way is the antithesis of respect and is utterly dispicable and deplorable, particularly when they insist the respect is there in spite of actions that say otherwise.

Well said. I agree.

Respect is how you act towards a person to me. If I respect someone, they get help without asking and I will actually talk with them. As I am trying to combat antisocial tendancies, that actually is a big deal.

If I don't repect you, well, I can and sometimes do make life harder. I go out of my way to verbally make them know I don't like them.

The other people, well, I am as curteous to them as I expect to be treated.

From What I Have Learned...

The term "respect" comes from two Latin terms: "re-", meaning "again", and "spectre", meaning "to look". Therefore to repect someone means to look at that person again for what the person actually is, behind that person's first appearance. Therefore, for me, if I respect someone, I would not just go by first impressions of them, but to get to know them in all other perspectives, such as their feelings, their background history, as well as their personal point of view. I hope this message makes sense.

For me it's someones achievements and yet also a touch of fear comes to mind.

Earning

I love to earn someones respect. I gives you a feeling that you really do make a difference somewhere. It lets you feel that what you say, no matter when or where, someone will listen because your input carries sway.
Sometimes you cant get ahead in life without a little respect.

It means I matter. It means that you being no more or less than I, matter as well. It's the recognition that I, you, it, they, she, he whatever has value and worth.
