I have never received a massage in my life, outside of family members. I signed up, well yesterday, to get a massage this Friday. What in the world am I supposed to do before the massage?

Massage details: 50 minutes, deep tissue, http://www.belliardsspa.com/contactus.htm

(Interesting mini-dilemma for a chessplayer, isn't it?)

Been many years and many massages since my rookie days; be cleans, turn off cell phone, have no immediate plans or obligation following the session; have cash for tip. Have fun.

Don't eat anything to irritate yer bowels. I can only imagine how embarassing it would be during a good massage to let a big chunky gas monster aloose.

I agree with Iluv... of course take a shower and moisturize! Dry scaly skin is yucky.
But also, I don't think I'd drink a lot either before getting a massage... you don't wanna have to interrupt with a potty break...
Let me know how it feels, I've always wanted to get a massage, but I'm too ticklish.. if someone started in on the deep tissue thing, shit.
Anyhow... good luck, relax and have fun!!

This is the one sure way to get Maniac involved with this thread, Saeria. Do you want that?

Just follow the advice of the others, lovethemaster22. If the person giving you the massage knows what there doing you should be asleep in the first ten minutes. Enjoy!!

You rule :bowing:

Sad to say, it's not a joke. A couple of friends of mine are massage therapists. You wouldn't believe how many people neglect this pretty basic courtesy!

I mean it could be a joke, but I was kinda serious too. You dont wanna be stankin on the table and all the oil they're gonna put on you will make you feel worse if you didn't shower prior to the massage.

Relax, sir. Calm Down and Keep Going. Just remember not to ask for hand relief at the end and you should be fine. Also try not to get an erection when lying face-up. It's hard work (trust me), but try your best.

I don't think it's any more complicated than it sounds, lovethemaster22. Like everyone's saying, come with your body clean and don't schedule anything in the following few hours.

The web site looks nice... let us know if your mind and your body do indeed become the same thing.

Take off your necklaces, should you wear any. They'll get in the way, when they massage your shoulders and neck.
Otherwise, just relax and enjoy :)

Excellent info, forgot all about that. And I will add to it: try to leave all jewelry at home if possible.

And if possible, try to allow enough time to get there, so you are not frazzled by traffic and running late when you do get there. Enjoy!!!

OK not to sound like the penny pincher, but if someone is already paying $50 for an hour massage, how much of a tip? I mean isn't $50 enough as it is?

Also, isn't "deep tissue" one of those painful massages that people get to fix pulled muscles? Am I thinking of a different type of massage? It works but it hurts like hell, whatever kind I am thinking.

The smileys - Yeah just keep telling yourself that maniactickler was joking about that question....

There are name and types of massages but a lot has to do with the therapist and his or her own style. Plus most therapist work with the client as far as comfort and pain go. But you are right "deep tissue" is usually a more intense style.

Um, it has been a long time since I only paid $50 for an hour massage, but those were the days. If the massage is in a spa, the spa most likely will keep most of the money. Most therapist, along with hair dressers, manicurists, facialist, etc rely on tip money, at least where I am at. I always tip 15-20% but it is optional.

Thank you for all your replies so far.

0) I'm posting my reply(ies) now in case I get here (here being a friend's house in South NJ until Sunday) from the chess tournament too late tomorrow night & can't get on.

1) I did plan to shower, so that much was clear, & I know I definitely will not pass gas - that would be bad.

2) Round 7 of the main event starts at 730PM, so I'm clear with that. If I can't participate in the quad or any side event on Friday morning/early afternoon, I'm okay with that too.

3) I thought about getting the reflexology massage also.

4) As for the deep tissue, I don't think it applies just to pulled muscles. But there is one way to find out.

5) As for tipping, I would have been surprised if tipping was unusual.
