Upper and lower extremity neuropathies, which range from minor sensory motor loss to permanent paralysis, may occur as a result of improper positioning. Trauma to nerves or nerve groups usually results from prolonged stretching or compression of nerve groups (eg, brachial plexus) and peripheral nerves (eg, ulnar, radial, peroneal, sciatic). In general, the longer the peripheral nerve, the greater the likelihood of injury.
