Save Naruto! (If you arn't an anime fan don't bother..)

Lil late for this, kunoke. They are going to start airing Naruto in October i believe so they alreadcy have edited most of the series.

Nonetheless, I've signed it anyway. I would love for them to leave it alone -- everything they bring over here is turned to crap on the way. T_T

Sadly if you all do not like Naruto being aired on the tv in america just don't watch it then. There are people like me that do not care if they screw it up or not because we do not know japanese or have money to buy the expenisive dvds/

I'm all for dubbing if it's done right. And theres alot of things in the american releases that aren't in the originals, like better audio, video, and digital quality and clarity. We often make the sound effects themselves better and we don't get credit for it because alot of folks don't read the american credits like sound editor, director, etc.

I remember with Evangelion in one of the later episodes the shots from the gun that were hitting the surface of the enemy (and this is in the original japanese track) made a "boingy sound", something totally screwy and innapropriate for the action that was taking place. The sound, in other words, didn't make the natural sounds it should have, but we added them in and did all sorts of things to make the series visually and audibly better even if the majority may not have noticed or just assumed it was already like hat. Our actors are better also, usually able to capture a character's essence in a way the japanese people simply cannot verbally because of their personal vocal limits. They are obviously used to it but we are not necessarily, which legitimizes a translation and adaptation. That itself is a cultural toss-up however. Purists are just as focused in what they want also.

While this in itself is nitpicking, my point is that you give and take with situations like this. If theres ever a real problem with any series its the translations. And thats not necessarily our fault, because the japanese language, literally interpreted, word for word, doesn't often make sense and even basic sentences can be problematic to forumulate and be as close as they can to whats being attempted. And this can sometimes happens even with the best of translators and editors, even if they themselves are japanese and not japanese american and should know, professionally speaking, how to translate one language to another efficiently.

Theres plenty of good american releases and licenced products/anime and its getting better because our relationship with Japan, even as a culture is better than it ever was, and we've really learned alot of their intentions with anime and we understand where they are coming from and what they want to achieve, especially from a director's point of view, which is arguably the most important role of all. This goes double for making sure a series is as accurate and faithful to the original release as possible.

From what I understand Naruto is not one of them, that is, one of those series that has no problems or ones that are very apparent and are kill joys for the audiance, primarily the fanbase itself. I have not seen the series, so I can't register much of a personal opinion. All I can say is it seems alot of people are disappointed with the direction the series is taking, and its very understandable. I honestly think only real otakus are going to care enough for the process and the minute details of such a thing. Anyone else could care less or think we're over reacting.

If the wheels have not yet been set into motion, then perhaps this petition will do some good and won't just delay things. I hope for your sake it goes over well. 🙂

EDIT: Upon reading additional related information (excluding what the petition presents), its clear to me that this show has been bastardized and raped of it's authenticity, and thats just not right. It seems more a matter of where the show goes so its not editted heavily than it is about the show itself, even the domestic release. :sigh:

DB and DBZ was bastardized by funimation

One note that was killed

OOlong had a wish come true, he was granted a wish by the dragon for whatever he wanted, so he wished for a pair of panties being the perv he is

in america
"I want the worlds most comfortable pair of underwear!"
sigh

It seems the problem is with syndicates and not american companies themselves then, which totally changes the dynamic of how this petition will be recieved by this...what was it...toonami?

Signed. It may be too late for the dub, but perhaps they will release it uncut (with subtitles or redubbed) on DVD a la Yu-Gi-Oh.

even uncut does not save the show, the worst thing is the dialog changing

That's why I said dubbed AND subbed. Uncut subtitling does change some elements (No translation can match the genuine article, but I sadly do not know Japanese (Yet.).), but it has the least impact of all forms of translation.

This problem is easily solved on dvd. Most series have both options to satisfy everyone. If someone was really a fan, they'd probably collect it, and then the problem would be solved.

When you're dealing with tv syndicates then its their problem and they're creating it, not the production/recording company either Japanese or English.

So inevitably this is all bypassed when something becomes available on dvd most of the time. A telivision network has no say in this process, since its a direct sale to the audiance and consumer.

Guys...it's not about it coming to the US. It has nothing to do with the dubbing. It's the fact that they're putting it on Toonami. 4Kids will probably get it. Guess what 4Kids likes to do? Change almost everything. If anyone remembers the amazing Anime One Piece, and then remembers the DUB of One Piece, you'll understand why Naruto fans would be upset. The fact of the matter is, unless Adult Swim gets Naruto, It's going to be screwed up. What will they edit? Oh, only what the enitire anime is about. The fighting. Tooami won't allow the swearing either, so they'll edit out all the language, all the blood, all the violence, and leave crappy sweat stains, bruises, and make the characters say "Darn it!" instead of "Damn it!", just like DBZ. Maybe those are things that some would be considered inappropriate, but it just doesn't make the anime seem as cool. The only reason they are doing this is so they can turn it into a kiddie show. Naruto is NOT a kiddie show, at all. For god sake, one of the techniques turns them into a naked girl! We just want it to be somewhere where they wont ruin it. If someone turns Naruto into a repeat of One Piece, millions of fans will be upset.

Sorry. Just had to rant. This is my faveorite show. =\

Again, its understandable and I know what you're saying. Thats why I said it has more to do with syndication than post-production and the like. Its a shame to be sure. If toonami is offering more money than adult swim though, then its too late.

lets not forget what they might do with haku's gay relationship with zabuza ;[

It's not necessarily that it's on Toonami, it's that 4Kids will probably get it, and they're the ones who edit. If I'm not mistaken they also dubbed Pokemon and One Piece.

That too...I've heard rumors they want to turn Haku into a girl. That's just...not right.

There is nothing in this world more annoying then Furry Autists.

Seriously, I think the fact that the Wb and cartoon network and the family channel air anime in america, even though its edited is kinda good in a way. As long as their is a market in this country for japanese anime, stores like---best buy, virgin megastore, will always carry lots of merchandise, and barnes and noble will sell graphic novels, and other manga literature. I mostly use toonami as a reference anyway. If i like it, then i go buy it on dvd anyway. Take that fcc corporate pirates!!!

Yeah. Its not as if you won't get the full benefit of the series through the dvd collection. Thats what I was saying earlier. And now AphxA makes the good point of this toonami release, however horribly it may edit the series, is just an attention grabber. If people see this series, a good portion of them are going to want to learn more. This is how the majority of dvd anime purchases come about anyway. You see something, it catches your eye after a few episodes. And then you see if its available so you can invest into it.

While the tv syndicate may bastardize the series, the dvds will not. And if you're already a fan at this point, then you already have the foreknowledge of knowing that watching the syndicated tv version isn't worth your time and you can go straight for the dvds when the series becomes completely available.

I don't think you all need to worry so much about Naruto. It's already been anounced that there isn't much editing in it. Some of the bloodier blood scenes have been de-blooded and the needles that Haku inserted into Sasuke are being edited but other than that it's very intact. I'll also say it's likely a safe bet that Haku will be played off as a girl instead of a boy. Though I hope not. He's one of my favorite characters. And the US DVDs will be unedited as well. The only voice actor that's been anounced so far is...aw shoot I forgot his name. But he did Shishio in Kenshin and Spike in Cowboy Bebopp. So I'm sure the dubbing will be great as well. Now...if you want a hacked all to hell anime sob story you need to be signing petitions for One Piece. (^_^)
