I don't get how people would send money without meeting someone first. that one woman only talked to the guy on the internet and phone.

Exactly. She's shallow, self-absorbed, and stupid. "We were such good friends" that... I didn't realize he was a homeless man with a gambling problem..? The word "friend" implies a level of relationship where that sort of thing couldn't simply be hidden away. Obviously, this woman isn't on too many levels to begin with.

I wouldn't approve of taking advantage of peoples' stupidity, but I don't think this is a "huge problem" for anyone with a nickel's worth of electrical activity upstairs. With the number of intelligent snares and scams out there netting people in genuinely vulnerable positions (students, single parents, retirees) and taking them for all that they're worth, I can't honestly say that this one worries me overmuch.

Speaking on a personal level, I'm pretty suspicious of anyone who tells me I'm wonderful and then asks for my money.
 
anytime anyone asks for money on the internet every bell in your head should go off.
I got scammed once for 200 dollars but it was an add in the NY Times Newspaper I thought that paper would check on people asking for money since then I trust no one.
 
Sounds like a lot of stupid shallow women to me. It's common sense not to send money via the internet in that fashion. Totally lame.

Indeed. It's hard for me to have sympathy for them. You never send money to anyone that you haven't ever met. I don't care if they did talk for 3 years. It's just common sense.
 
Too many crooks rely on just that lack of common sense found in many people out there. Sigh.
