I don't know why, but I've had this on my mind today. Here are a few I remember seeing long ago.

Fantistic Voyage (1966) starring Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch, Donald Pleasence, Edmund O'Brien and Arthur Kennedy.

Westworld (1973) starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin.

Rollerball (1975) starring James Cann and John Houseman.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, co-written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke.

Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood star as Dr. David Bowman and Dr. Frank Poole, the doomed crew of Discovery One presided over by their HAL 9000 computer, voiced by Douglas Rains.

If you've never read the book, pick up a copy. It is worth reading.

The first sci-fi that mattered:
<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/OfpSXI8_UpY?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/OfpSXI8_UpY?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object>

Then...
<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/P9T9f3UbGuo?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/P9T9f3UbGuo?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></object>

The best sound effects ever weren't digital

Great choices guys. If you like a large helping of cheese with your science fiction check out Forbidden Planet (1956) starring Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and of course Robby the Robot. This film is so stupendously bad it cries out to be watched.

<object width="425" height="349"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8y4crGU7dkg?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8y4crGU7dkg?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I'm somewhat surprised no mention has been made of Planet of the Apes (1968) starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter.

The all time classic of all time. STAR WARS!!

Dude, Star Wars is NOT a sci-fi! It's a fantasy movie that happens to be set in another version of our outer space, featuring another version of human beings. Think about it, is there any SCIENCE actually involved? I realised this whilst I was studying genre at Uni and my argument is totally watertight!!!

My top ten 'older' sci-fi movies would be an embarrassingly obvious list:

10: Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978)
9: Planet Of The Apes (1968)
8: The Thing (1982)
7: Metropolis (1927)
6: Escape From New York (1981)
5: The Thing (1982)
4: Alien (1979)
3: The Terminator (1984)
2: Westworld (1973)
1: Blade Runner (1982)

I think the seventies and eighties gave us the classics of the genre but the most interesting sci-fi's, like Dark City (1998) and Moon (2009) have come about more recently, as technology has evolved and we have more of an idea of what the world will look like in the future.

Good thread Idea Bugman, I forgot about some of those sci-fi classics.

Inspired by Super 8 I am currently writing a script that is a mix of Explorers, Flight of the Navigator and Last Starfighter but without the silly aliens
