I"m already planning vacation for the summer of 2008, which will be my 30th wedding anniversary...i've always wanted to go to England, but lately have had thoughts of Scotland as well..for those of you who either live in either place or have visited, which would you recommend? i'm not sure i can do justice to both countries if i decided to try them both in one visit...i want this vacation to be super special...as not everyone reaches their thirtieth wedding anniversary...thanks in advance..i need to plan it now..so i can get just the right kind of tour that i want, personalized for us...

Neither. Go to Ireland. Or perhaps Prague. I would also suggest Tokyo.

Ireland is a good choice..... so is Tokyo. Bangkok too!

have either of you been to those places???? i would also love to visit Egypt..but hubby won't..said we would stick out like sore thumbs...

I been to Scotland and egypt i loved Scotland and the highlands so why not Scotland and then we got egytp and the pyramids and so much more so a tuff choice. Both are very nice places why not Italy or have you been there already and i could also recommend sweden if your going in the summer if you go up above the arctic cirle you will see the midnight sun and experience 24 hour daylight. :wavingguy

I was actually going to suggest Egypt but thought it just might not be up your alley, but apparently was. I've always wanted to go there and explore the pyramids and Valley of the Kings. Flatfoot and I plan to make it there in our lives together at some point.

As for Scotland or England, it might be nice to go to places where you don't have to learn a new language which is one big reason I've had a desire to go England and such.

Congratulations in advance for a very rare celebration these days! If you've always wanted to go to England there are plenty of wonderful places to go and see, but it's dificult to recommend somewhere now without knowing what sort of thing you're looking for i.e. romantic, scenic, historical, busy, quiet all of the aforementioned? I can certainly recommend our green and pleasant lands, but then, I am biased somewhat!

My advice if visiting here, dependent on time constraints of course, would be to see several areas that whet your appetite and make the most of your stay whilst here. I will happily recommend areas if you give an idea of what you're looking for in this very special vacation.

Bel, thanks for those suggestions..i've never been out of the states except for the virgin islands..so all those places are new to me..

Girls yes..i've always been interested in ancient Egypt, in fact i often would love to go back and be an Egyptologist, specializing in ancient Egypt, hieroglyphics to be exact...

If you're American...

..England is hella expensive right now to visit. The dollar is getting murdered against the British pound, and everything is costing 2x what you would pay for it in the States. If you want to grab a burger and fries at Hard Rock London, it's about 12 pounds, which is $24 USD.

Ouch! Mexico sounds good! 🙂

historic of course...anything to do with Jane Austen England or Tudor England...or Daphne du Maurier England..and thanks...our thirtieth ain't until summer after this one...but i'm planning ahead...

Horatio hmm and ack...i don't wish to go to Mexico...lol...

Sounds amazing Mel, I love to travel too and early congrats for next summer :cuddle:

Hmm, in England you have the Cotswolds, Bath (for the famous baths lol), the Lake District. I drove all the way up to Scotland when we visited Orkney (don't bother, dead boring and flat lol). If you are going to Scotland, Perthshire was bloody lovely, I definately wanna go back up that way sometime. Also with Ireland, unfortunately I've only been to Dublin, but wanna see the more rugged side.

My sis and her hubby went to Egypt and did all the trips, they haven't recommended that to me when I voiced an interest as all the people on the boat were sick and had severe trots, they also said it stank of sewerage everywhere and very bad hygiene, yuck, sorry lol.

Sure there are others out there with sound advice for either Scotland or England 🙂

You can't go wrong with any area of the West Country from Cornwall - with all it's quaint little fishing harbours - and then following right round to Worcester which is where Bath is and your on the doorstep for the Cotswolds That whole trail has ancient history, you could follow the Arthurian legend trail round these parts of the country. There are just too many great places to see. Here's some working from the North downwards:

The Lake District
The city of York & the Yorkshire Dales
Stratford Upon Avon (Shakespeares County)
The Cotswolds
The West country - Cornwall, Devon, Somerset (Stonehenge)

Sorry, it's getting late here and I'm not feeling too bright at the moment so my minds gone blank, but I'll think on it.

My favorite city's Amsterdam (of those I've visited at least).

I also intend to make it to India at some point.

However, my advice would be to spend a couple days in London, then rent a car and drive wherever you feel like.

Ovation makes some good suggestions. To those i would add, The Peak District, Snowdonia and Pride Park.

Dont bother with Scotland, its just a bad weather theme park.

I would visit parts of my own country before I went over seas, have you considered going to a part of the states you haven't been to before?

Historical can be amazing in England or Scotland.

They have so much MORE of it than we do.
Two of their major highways are built over the same Roman roads that were mentionedd in the Robin Hood legends as Watling Street and The Fosse Way.
There are country inns that have been in business for more than 1000 years!
I've seen places with signs that said Robin Hood ate or slept there!

If you go to the west country along the Welsh border, don't miss the beautiful castles at Caernarvon, Caerphilly and Pembroke! they're amazing.

If you're going to Scotland, fly in to London for a couple days, see the Tower, Windsor and the bridges, then book first class on the train called "The Flying Scotsman", have meals in the dining car enroute. In Scotland, see Edinburgh Castle too, and see if you be there when they're having the Highland games, which are great fun to watch!

The highland landscapes are just breathtaking, and some of the wildest and loveliest are to be seen looking north from the central part of Hadrian's wall.

Wherever you go there, enjoy!

Luv
Mitch

thanks Mitch that sounds super fun...i've already planned on definitely seeing the Tower..i must see where Ann Boleyn, and Sir Thomas More spent their last days..i'll check out that train thing...

Slaver yea i know..i've heard that before..but i have always wanted to see England, and or Scotland...the home of my ancestors..

If you're going to be in London and seeing the Tower also visit Tower Bridge (next door so to speak) which has an exhibtion (I think they have a functional rack up there) and The Clink (South Bank side of the Thames). Also just over the river heading south you will be able to visit Hampton Court which was the home of Henry VIII and further out of London in Kent you can go visit Heaver Castle which was the home of the Boleyn family before our Henry took it from them by marrying their daughter. The castle is amazing and the grounds are stunning, plus you will be able to view clothing that once belonged to Ann etc.

If castles are your thing, Windsor is not that far from London which belongs to the Queen. There is also Arundel castle in West Sussex which is also stunning and the village is beutiful . . .

Wow, I could go on here but I'll give someone else a chance!

If you're in London, have a look on the walls of the Thames (you could get someone/map/etc to point it out) for Traitors' Gate.

however, if you plan to go somewhere else, Cornwall (home of the legendary King Arthur at Tintagel Castle) is a lovely place. Otherwise, The peak district is stunning; you can walk, mountain bike, clib, etc. The Lake District is great for that too, although somewhat even more breathtaking IMHO. Google it, you won't be disappointed!

Visit neither -
The english are mean & nasty.
The scots are just tight.
Visit Ireland 😉

hmm well that's vote three or four for Ireland...i would like to visit there as well..some friends of ours went on a bed and breakfast tour of Ireland..visited all the pubs...sounds super awesome to me.. and hmm i know the scots are tight..i am a scot, maiden name stewart...i save my used aluminum foil until it's too old to use again for my tuna..hehe...and hmm i'm also part english...and was my dad ever frugal...a true scot he was..

Subzero and ovation..thanks for all those wonderful suggestions..what i want to do is somehow create an exclusive tour..i saw the perfect one which would only include sixteen people in an old PBS magazine of mine, but haven't been able to trace it again...

Edinburgh

I'm biased as I live in Edinburgh but it is really beautiful and historic. The three week Arts Festival there in August is the biggest in the world.

Have fun wherever you go.
