"The Flight that Fought Back", Sunday, September 11th, on the Discovery Channel. A re-creation of what happened on the doomed Flight 93, bound for the capitol....anyone going to watch it?

If this thread were inteded to be that funny, it would be in the Silly Stuff forum.

Just what is it that you find so jocular?

I posted a thread in this section about what I thought of the mainstream tryin to make entertainment off this...fuckin sad and pathetic! :sowrong: I sure as hell aint gonna be watchin that crap.

I don't see what the point of this movie is. Nobody knows what really happened. I think we do know there were heroes on board...I'm just going to leave the rest to my imagination instead of letting the discovery channel create that vision for me.

If they produced a good, factually-based film that accurately depicted those on the doomed plane (rather than glorifying them all as Gods) and fairly represented the bombers (in so much as you can fairly represent such murderers, but they did believe they were doing it for a cause, even though even those supporting their cause often disagree with their actions) then it might be good. I think it will be either used as 'entertainment' or as a patriotic piece of propaganda.

But what do I know (a rhetorical question, would not like to know your answers)

I know what Im going to say will be shocking to most of you..but I agree with most of the others here. Im tired of people creating "TV Documentaries" in the so called name of "finding the truth", when it actually ends up being a rating grabbing, cry your heart out, moive of the week production wrapped in a cloak of "realism" How could they possibly have any idea of what happenend on that flight. Only a few (very few) accounts of actual factual information exist, and what does exist is about 30 minutes of phone conversations between a wife or two and their husbands, and about 5 to 10 minutes of flight information gathered from tapes at the air towers.
How could anyone possibly re-create the event.
On a last note Im posting tonight from my laptop connected to a cell phone while Im taking a break volunteering with the Red Cross in Mississippi. I dont know what town, because it doesnt exist anymore. I certainly hope that Hollywood NEVER, I mean NEVER EVER tries to make a movie from this horrible and unforgetable disaster. Im going to post another thread to explain what Ive done and seen today..I hope you all read.

Well done that man!!

I've had the urge to get over there and help for the last couple of days now. I just wish I didn't live so many thousands of miles away.

My feelings on movies like these are mixed.

On one side, I can appreciate the stories of individuals and how learning those stories gives a human side to things that makes them more real for those who weren't there. I believe that it's good to remember things so that we can learn and grow from them.

BUT... What I don't like is the fact that many of these types of movies actually end up cheapening the experiences and pain of those who were caught in the middle. They all seem to have to include the prerequisite soap opera story so they can have a feel good ending. This is reality. There IS nothing to feel good about aside from the fact that there were obviously some on board who cared enough to give their lives to save others. That doesn't negate the horror of what happened.

To answer your question, am I going to watch? Honestly, I don't know. There's a part of me that wants to see what they did with the story. And, there's a part of me that feels like it would be somewhat disrespectful to the real victims to give credence to a commercial gain from their sacrifice. I suppose it will depend on which wins out in the end....and what else is going on that night.

This might sound harsh, but a tragedy like this is a public tragedy. The victims had the misfortune to meet their end in a very public way, and unfortunately cannot claim the tragedy as their own (nor can their families). Therefore, I couldn't care less about disrespecting families etc. The story needs to be told, and yes, it is not nice to think that people will make a lot of money out of the misfortune, but there you go. Maybe the victims families could get some money for being involved?

There's always going to be someone who will make a movie or documentary or whatever about some tragedy that happened. Why? Because they know people are going to watch. Like people who are historians or interested in history, interested in knowing what happened. There have been movies about all kinds of wars, all kinds of tragedies, everything because people are going to watch. Examples: Platoon => Vietnam, Schindler's List => the Holocaust, Pearl Harbor => WWII, the list goes on.
It's terrible that there'll be people making these just for a profit, but there are genuine people who want to know what happened. As long as they did their research and reconstructed a fairly accurate account, I say fine show it.
I am one of those people who will watch. I'm just that way. I want to know more. My grandpa was the same way. He watched all documentaries on WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Korean War, everything because he was a Vet. My dad is interested in these type of documentaries, also.
And as long as we are a race of people who want to stay with the times and want to know what's happening and what happened, there will always be these types of movies, documentaries, etc.
