I was stunned and saddened to read this. Mr Hemsley had a trailblazing role, which paved the way for Bill Cosby. As I've mentioned before on this forum, George Jefferson was the first affluent African American ever shown on TV.

He was a great actor. RIP Sherman.

Actually Bill Cosby was blazing trails long before Sherman Hemsley, with his tv show "I Spy" and classic comedy albums in the late 60s.

That said.......Sherman Hemsley was a really funny fellow.

He was funny and always had a sense of humor about himself and his image. I always thought he got a bum rap because of his popularity with "The Jeffersons" pigeon-holing him in shitty roles and movies afterward, most of them involving Hulk Hogan.

RIP Sherman Hemsley. George Jefferson and Deacon Frye will live forever in my memory. Man, when I got this news i was really saddened. I grew up on the shows "The Jefferson" and "Amen". Wow, he will truly be missed.

^Bill Cosby was well established in the comedy field way before Mr Hemsley came on the scene.^


But I liked old George Jefferson, and I am sure that particular program will be found in reruns somewhere.
