RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — A 9-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in the western Amazon jungle, a pregnancy that authorities say may have been the result of rape, the National Indian Bureau said Friday.

The girl was found in the jungle in April by laborers working on a natural gas pipeline from the Coari oil fields to Manaus, a city of 1.5 million people 1,800 miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro, said the bureau, known as Funai.

She was taken to Manaus and went into labor on Thursday. The baby, weighing 4.9 pounds, was delivered by Caesarean section and reportedly was in good health, said Daniele Santos of the Funai press office.

The mother, of the Apurina tribe, has refused to speak, and the identity of the infant's father was unknown, Santos said.

Interesting to me that should be regularly ovulating at that age. Keep in mind this is a member of the Apurina tribe, not a city kid. Customs may be different.

Biologically, though, really interesting. Once upon a time, cats would go into heat starting at about age 6 or 7 months. Nowadays they're going into heat as early as 4 months. Is the same phenomenon occuring in humans? If so, why?

Earlier in our cultural history, women became pregnant earlier- and we also died earlier. Then as our lifetimes lengthened, women got pregnant later and later, sometimes to the detriment of the health of mother and child.

Nope. It's the hormones put into animals like chickens and cows to make them grow bigger. Especially a problem in countries where such things are not regulated. She might be a "tribal kid" but I'm sure she still got enough hormone-loaded chicken to cause her to mature early.

I'm sure she did. Just because she's out in the jungle doesn't mean missionaries and the like didn't bring food into their village, that people from their tribe didn't go into the towns and buy processed food, etc. Now adays you'd have to live on the dark side of the moon not to be exposed to Twinkes.

It's possible. It's happened before. Girls are hitting puberty younger and younger.

Pssh -- 9? That's old, compared to this young lady. Anyway, we have to remember two things -- first, the fact that she in particular was capable of having a child really doesn't reflect on the world at large; there will always be the early bloomers and the late bloomers. Second, the fact that women in much of the Western world are having children later in life has nothing to do with puberty and everything to do with social patterns and expectations. I think everything that I've ever read on the subject indicates that girls are hitting puberty earlier than they did, for example, fifty years ago. They're also waiting much, much longer to have children (unwanted teenage pregnancies aside, of course).

Having a child will both be bad and good for this young lady. She will have the difficult responsibilities of caring for a child, but the publicity and public interest will mean she'll be taken care of for at least the next few years.

You'd be surprised how many of those "unwanted" teenage pregnancies are actually planned. The girls think it'll keep their boyfriends around, or they feel unloved and think having a child would give them what they're missing, or the boyfriends plan it without the girlfriend knowing - but it's still planned.
