In light of the new information about the money Rose earns from autograph signing.. I wanted to post a poll asking if forum members believe Rose should be re instated, and elected to the Hall of Fame.. Yes, I do think that Pete Rose should be reinstated, and elected to the Hall of Fame.
What he did by betting on baseball games, is wrong, and terrible.. however.
In my view, he's had a more than twenty year punishment, and has served his time. There are people who have been in jail for murder, who have served less time that Rose has.
That having been said...
The Rose situation is so controversial, that I do not see him being re instated anytime soon. My gut is.. that he will either be reinstated, and perhaps elected to the Hall, Posthumonously, or that he will never be reinstated or elected to the Hall.
Rose's actions are part of the problem. The other issue is the fate of Bart Giamatti, the man who banned Rose. With the tragic fate that Giamatti met, I think there might be people who would feel that reinstating Rose would be an insult to Giamatti's memory, even though Giamatti was commissioner of baseball for only a short time.

He should be banned for life, but not for eternity. (By that I mean that he should be in the Hall of Fame the year after he dies, so he never lives to see it.)

On a similar note: Alex Karras and Paul Hornung bet on football while both were still playing and they are both in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. So I think Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame.

The guy was a fantastic baseball player. Yes, he made an egregious mistake, but that time has long since past. Pete Rose deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. If these guys who used steroids can be on the ballot than so can Pete Rose.

That said, I really don't see what was so horrible about what Pete Rose did. So he gambled. So what? I don't do it myself, but whom did he hurt except himself? If he wasn't betting against his own team, where's the conflict of interest? (If he bet on his own team, big deal; it just means he wanted his team to win. That was his job anyway.)
Ty Cobb was an unrepentant predator of women, and he's in the HoF. He hurt a great many people other than himself. If Mr. Rose deserves exclusion, Mr. Cobb most definitely does.

Xod has a very interesting observation. The thing is, Xod, what you mentioned with Ty Cobb was in his personal life. What Rose did.. might well have directly affected the game of baseball that he was managing. Plus, how do we know that he might not have bet against his own team certain times, and made moves with the hope the team might lose the game, so he would win his bet?
That being said, as I've mentioned before, I think he's served his time. Mr Rose was banned in 1989. 24 years seems a long enough time to serve a sentence, even if he did commit a "crime".

True, what Mr. Cobb did was in his private life. However, to be placed in the Hall of Fame means that one is being held up as an ideal, someone to admire and emulate. Again, if gambling merits exclusion, rape most CERTAINLY does.

Well, since the Baseball HOF isn't actually run by the MLB, he doesn't (technically) have to be re-instated to be eligible for induction. Selig would throw a shit fit, but that's neither here nor there. Charlie Hustle belongs in the HOF.
Angel, you might be right that if he gets in, it wont be until after his death.. I'm not sure.

Until I looked in the Wikipedia, I didn't realize just how many major league records Rose holds, not only just for
"hits", but so many others as well, such as 200 hit seasons, at bats, records for amount of games played at different positions, etc.
